Heat polymerized acrylic resin is the most common material used for making denture base because of it’s advantages. However, this material still hasn’t fulfill all the ideal requirements as a denture base. Some disadvantages that need to be fixed are low impact and transverse strength causing an easy base of fracture. Several attempts were made to improve the mechanical properties of heat polymerized acrylic resin materials by adding reinforcing materials. Zirconium oxide is one of chemical group that can be used as a reinforcing material and polypropylene fiber which is including in fiber reinforcing groups. This study aims to determine whether there is a difference in the effect of the addition of 5% ZrO2 nanoparticles and 2% chopped polypropylene fibers 6 mm in length on the impact and transverse strength of heat polymerized acrylic resin denture base material. The design of this study is a laboratory experimental and the number of samples in this study are 60 samples. The result of this study shows the mean value of the impact and transverse strength of heat polymerized acrylic resin with ZrO2 nanoparticles reinforced is greater than the control group and heat polymerized acrylic resin group with polypropylene fiber reinforced with significant difference, and the mean value of impact and transverse strength of heat polymerized acrylic resin with polypropylene fibers reinforced is greater than the control group with significant difference.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is characterised clinically by usage-related pain and/or functional limitation. OA that is associated with physical dysfunction and decline in health-related quality of life caused the main disability worldwide and is expected to increase due to aging and obesity rates and further load on the population and health system. The strengthening exercises that normally used is knee flexion and extensions, isometric quadriceps exercise, isometric hamstring exercise, and sit to stand to improve the balance. Objectives: is to find out the impact of Strengthening exercise on Balance in patients with knee Osteoarthritis Study Design: Quasi experimental study Methods: Fifty-six (n=56) of knee OA patients were involved in this study by judgemental sampling design. Researcher will first demonstrate and explain the Y-balance tools testing procedure based on Plisky and colleagues study. Participants are given to practice six trials before the formal testing, stated that SEBT have a significant learning effect and found that the reaching distances reached the longest distance after six trials and then will be constant. Results: Independent t-test shows significant difference in only anterior direction. In the experimental group the mean value is 69.83 with a SD of 11.62 while in the control group the mean value is 63.51 with a SD of 11.36; p-value of .045 and t-value of 2.056. In postero-lateral directions result shows there is no significant difference, experimental group the mean value is 91.10 with a SD of 9.74 while in control group mean value is 90.88 with SD value of 12.68; p-value of .947 and t-value of .067. Result of postero-medial shows no significant difference too, in experimental group the mean value of 95.16 with SD of 10.92 while in control group the mean value is 93.40 with SD of 8.20; p=value of .501 and t-value of .678. Conclusion: This study has proven strengthening exercise using YBT improved only anterior direction of YBT but no significant difference in postero-lateral and postero-medial direction. Introduction: Acrylic resin is the most common material for the denture base because the acrylic resin has good esthetics, ease of processing, reparability, and inexpensive. A disadvantage of acrylic resin is that it is easy to be cracked. One of the ways to resolve this problem is by adding agave sisalana fiber and E-glass fiber. The purpose of this study was to find out the effect of the addition of agave sisalana fiber and E-glass fiber on the impact strength of an acrylic resin denture plate reparation. Material and Method: The experiment involved twenty-seven plates of heat-cured acrylic with the dimensions of 55x 10 x 10 mm with the 26 x 5 x 4 mm for the cavity to measure, each measurement divided into three groups, with nine samples for each group. The first group was a control group (without fiber), the second group was a group with agave sisalana fiber addition, the third group was a group with e-glass fiber addition. All plates were soaked in distillation water for one day at 37o C. Plates were tested for impact strength using the Charpy method. All data obtained were analyzed with one-way ANOVA followed by LSD (Least Significant Difference) with p<0,05. Result and Discussion: The result showed that the influences of impact strength between without fiber with agave sisalana fiber and E-glass fiber addition on acrylic denture reparation. Acrylic denture reparation in both fibers with concentration 3,3%, agave sisalana fiber has the highest impact strength rather than e-glass fiber. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that there is an increase in impact strength with agave sisalana fiber and E-glass fiber addition on acrylic denture reparation and agave sisalana fiber has the highest impact strength.

Many attempts have been made enhancing properties of PMMA denture base material. Adding fillers to PMMA was a commonly used method to improve physical and mechanical properties. To estimate the effects of incorporating recycled polymethylmethacrylate with a different percentage with conventional heat-cured acrylic resin on some properties of heat-cured denture base resin. The recycled polymethylmethacrylate (Chaini-HK G) particles dissolved at (5%,10%,15%) was added to heat-cured polymethylmethacrylate (Spofadental, Czech Republic) polymer and mixed with a ratio of 2:1 with the polymethylmethacrylate monomer. A total number of specimens were 80, which divided into three experimental groups (5%, 10%, 15%) and control group. Each group have 20specimens. The surface hardness, water sorption, solubility and residual monomer of test groups measured as well as compared to that of control groups. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy test (FTIR) was done for three experimental and control group. This study shows a statistically significant difference at (p<0.01) in the hardness of recycled polymethylmethacrylate incorporate material (10 %,15%) groups when compared with a control group; while recycled polymethylmethacrylate incorporated (5%) group show no significant difference, group with 15% shows the highest Vickers hardness value. The mean values of water sorption test solubility test and residual monomer were decreased with the increase of incorporating a percentage of recycled polymethylmethacrylate as compared to the mean value of the control group. The incorporation of recycled polymethylmethacrylate to heat acrylic resin at different percentage improves some of its properties.

The aim: This study evaluates the effect of adding silanized halloysite nanotubes to the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) resin on its hardness, impact strength, transverse strength. Materials and methods: Three groups of acrylic resin were prepared, one group without HNTs, was used as a control group (A). The other two groups contained 0.3% (B), 0.6% wt of silanized halloysite nanotubes (C). For each one, hardness, impact strength and transverse strength were measured. One-way ANOVA and Tukey’s test were used for comparison. Results: Regarding to the impact test, there was no significant difference between 0.3% concentration and the pure (control) group while 0.6% concentration had significant decrease compared to the pure group and so between the 0.3% group 0.6% group. For the hardness test, the 0.3% group had no significant difference with the pure group and a significant difference between group 0.6% group and the pure group while there was a no significant decrease between the 0.3% and 0.6% group with the higher hardness mean in the 0.3% compared to 0.6% group. For the transverse strength, both 0.3% wt concentration and 0.6% concentration showed significant difference compared to the pure group and also between each other with the lowest impact strength in 0.6% group followed by 0.3% group with the highest transverse strength in the pure group. Conclusions: The silanation of halloysite nanotubes reduces the mechanical properties of the heat-cured acrylic denture base material. The more concentration of silanazed halloysite nanotubes is added, the more weakening occurs in the acrylic material relating to the hardness, transverse strength and impact strength.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of implant surface treatment with carboxyethylphosphonic acid and fibroblast growth factor 2 on the bone–implant interface during the osseointegration period in vivo using an animal model. The present research was carried out in six minipigs, in whose left tibia implants were inserted as follows: eight implants with a standard surface treatment, for the control group, and eight implants with a surface treatment of carboxyethylphosphonic acid and immobilization of FGF-2, for the test group. At 4 weeks after the insertion of the implants, the animals were sacrificed for the histomorphometric analysis of the samples. The means of the results for the implant–bone contact variable (BIC) were 46.39 ± 17.49% for the test group and 34.00 ± 9.92% for the control group; the difference was not statistically significant. For the corrected implant–bone contact variable (BICc), the mean value of the test group was 60.48 ± 18.11%, and that for the control group, 43.08 ± 10.77%; the difference was statistically significant (p-value = 0.035). The new bone formation (BV/TV) showed average results of 27.28 ± 3.88% for the test group and 26.63 ± 7.90% for the control group, meaning that the differences were not statistically significant (p-value = 0.839). Regarding the bone density at the interthread level (BAI/TA), the mean value of the test group was 32.27 ± 6.70%, and that of the control group was 32.91 ± 7.76%, with a p-value of 0.863, while for the peri-implant density (BAP/TA), the mean value of the test group was 44.96 ± 7.55%, and that for the control group was 44.80 ± 8.68%, without a significant difference between the groups. The current research only found a significant difference for the bone–implant contact at the cortical level; therefore, it could be considered that FGF-2 acts on the mineralization of bone tissue. The application of carboxyethylphosphonic acid on the surface of implants can be considered a promising alternative as a biomimetic coating for the immobilization of FGF-2. Despite no differences in the new bone formation around the implants or in the interthread or peri-implant bone density being detected, the biofunctionalization of the implant surface with FGF-2 accelerates the mineralization of the bone–implant interface at the cortical level, thereby reducing the osseointegration period.

Introduction: The denture base is the part of the removable denture that is supported by good adaptation to the underlying oral tissue. Most of the denture bases are made of acrylic or polymethyl methacrylate resin, better known as PMMA. However, the acrylic resin also has disadvantages such as easily broken and absorbs liquids both water and chemicals. The chemical absorption like alcohol, ethanol, and some drinks that contain acidic materials will chemically be induced with acrylic resin and settle in the pores of the acrylic resin. The chemical damage or defect creates roughness on the surface of the acrylic resin which can cause cracking or crazing and a decrease in surface strength and hardness. Materials and Methods: The method used in this research was a laboratory experimental design with a post-test-only control group using 12 samples consisting of 2 different types of samples by measuring the surface roughness of the acrylic resin after immersing the sample with a predetermined time. Results and Discussions: One-way ANOVA test results showed a significant difference in surface roughness after the samples immersion with a value of p = 0.006 (p <0.05). Conclusions: Based on this research, can be concluded that there is an increase in the surface roughness of the heated polymerized acrylic resin for 3 hours and 4 hours of immersion. The longer the heated polymerized acrylic resin is soaked in arak hence the level of surface roughness increases.

Background: Health problem are culturally associated with smoking in developing countries. Many hazardous chemicals are taken up by direct or passive smoking causing lipid peroxidation resulting in oxidative stress. Objectives: To estimate the occurrence of smoking and its effects on the lipid profile in populations of Hasilpur, Pakistan. Methodology: The current study was conducted from April - August 2014. Out of 247 apparently healthy subjects of both genders (male=220; female=27), 134 were smokers and 113 were non-smokers. In order to analyze lipid profile, blood samples were collected in early morning hours from the selected members who were asked to fast all night. By using Chem-100 chemistry analyzer, cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL and VLDL were analyzed. Results: The overall prevalence of smokers was 54.25%. The results showed 60.9% prevalence in males and 0% in females. The mean value of serum triglyceride in control, light smokers and heavy smokers was 147.4±11.7mg/dl, 190.8±41.4 and 205.3±29.7mg/dl, respectively. The results of cholesterol in control, light smokers and heavy smokers were 147.38±7.99mg/dl, 136.8 ±12. 8mg/dl and 173.44±8.63mg/dl, respectively. There was a considerable distinction in the mean level of serum triglyceride and cholesterol between the control group, light smokers and heavy smoker groups (P<00.5). The mean value of HDL of control, light smokers and heavy smokers was 30.93±1.30mg/dl, 31.10±2.45 and 34.58±1.55mg/dl, respectively. The mean values of LDL and VLDL of control, light smokers and heavy smokers were 110.46±3.63mg/dl, 106.00±4.52mg/dl, 117.19±3.48mg/dl and 33.54±3.11mg/dl, 49±9.02mg/dl, 41.06±5.34mg/dl, respectively. There was significant difference in the mean level of HDL, LDL and VLDL between the control group, light smokers and heavy smoker groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: This study concluded that smoking is the reasons of variation in the lipid profile. Elevated period of smoking and the number of smoked cigarettes/day reason the alteration in serum lipid levels and is probably related with increased danger for coronary artery disease.

Objectives: Compare tensile and transverse strength of new copolymers for denture base. Materials and methods: The specimens were prepared from heat cured acrylic resin with three types of additives: Acryester B, Ethoxycarbonylethylene, and Propenoic acid at a percentage of 5% and 10%. The tensile and transverse strains were tested, recorded and compared. Results: The analysis of variance display statistically significant difference. The p-value was 0.001 for each of tensile and transverse strain tests. Conclusions: The tensile strength of the novel copolymers increased. The transverse strength of some of the novel copolymers increased.

Abstract Aim Controversy continues regarding the biocompatibility of denture base materials. One method to evaluate the biocompatibility of materials is in an animal study. Using dogs as subjects, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the vestibular tissue reaction to cobalt chromium (Co-Cr), heat cure acrylic resin, and acrylic resin mixed with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) compared with a control group using the histopathologic method. Methods and Materials Twelve disk shape samples (2 mm × 8 mm) in four groups of Co-Cr, acrylic resin, acrylic resin mixed with a 20% weight ratio of Al2O3, and a control group (Teflon) were fabricated. In one stage surgery two samples of each material (8 samples) was implanted in the buccal vestibule of each dog (n=6), subcutaneously. At 45 and 90-day intervals, half of the samples were excised along with peripheral tissue to assess the presence of inflammation by grading on a scale from 0 to 3 and the presence of a fibrotic capsule using histological observations. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, and Tau b Kendal tests. Results Tissue reaction between Co-Cr and the control group was significant (P=0.02), but it was not significant between other groups. There was no significant difference between the 45 and 90-day postinsertion samples. The formation of fibrotic capsule groups was significant (P=0.01). It was significant between the Co-Cr and acrylic resin groups (P=0.01) and the acrylic resin and control groups (P=0.01). Conclusion The Co-Cr group was more toxic than the other groups. The inflammation increased during time. The inflammation in two acrylic groups was greater than the control and less than the Co-Cr group. The formation of fibrotic capsule, except in the acrylic resin with Al2O3 group, increased over time. Clinical Significance Co-Cr alloys are toxic and can produce damage to living tissue. Abstract Background: Blood cells are deficient in membrane-bound glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) because of an acquired disorder of the pluripotent stem cell. CD55 and CD59 antigens are the most common GPI-anchored proteins that are used for the diagnosis of the presence of PNH clone. The association of MDS with PNH is rather controversial. There are few published individual cases of PNH arrived from a previous MDS or MDS following PNH. Aim: Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of PNH clone in some MDS patients. These studies were performed mostly on erythrocytes and to the best of our knowledge they are only 4. Granulocytes appear to be more sensitive markers of PNH clone existence than erythrocytes and therefore we investigate the expression of PNH clone on granulocytes of patients with MDS. Material-Methods: A total number of 95 patients 25–80 yrs old with MDS {A:19 with refractory anaemia (RA), B:9 with refractory anaemia with ring sideroblasts (RARS), C:17 with refractory anaemia with excess blasts (RAEB), D: 12 with refractory anaemia with excess blasts in transformation (RAEB-t) and E: 19 with chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMLL)} and 19 healthy donors were included in our study. The presence of GPI-anchored proteins (CD55, CD59)-deficient granulocytes was examined by flow cytometry. For the detection of the PNH clone the commercial kit by Beckman Coulter (cellquant CD55/CD59) was used. Statistical analysis was made by ANOVA, while Robust test was performed because there was no homogeneity of variances by ANOVA. Results: Table 1 shows the percentages of CD55 and CD59 deficient granulocytes in the 5 groups of pts with MDS comparing with the control group. a) Although the mean values of CD55 deficient granulocytes in the groups RAEB, RAEB-t and CMLL were higher enough than those of the normal subjects, there were no statistically significant differences (p>0.10) in the comparison of the mean values of CD55 deficient granulocytes between each group of patients with the control group. b) On the contrary there was a very statistically significant difference in the comparison of the mean value of CD59 deficient granulocytes between the three last groups (C, D and E) of pts with the control group (p< 0.086, p< 0.001 and p<0.001 respectively). On the contrary the two low risk forms (RA, RARS) revealed no such populations. Non-expression of CD59 antigen on granulocytes is a more sensitive marker than that of CD55 antigen for the presence of a possible PNH clone in MDS patients.
