Latest in a long series of successful conferences, the XXIIIrd IUPAC Symposium on Photochemistry was held in Ferrara, Italy on 11-16 July 2010. The conference venues were the Opera Theatre and the Estense Castle, in the historic center of the city. The contrasting mix of modern science and ancient environment was a special trait of the Ferrara symposium. The symposium was attended by over 500 delegates (including some 130 Ph.D. students) from 40 different countries. The scientific program consisted of 8 plenary lectures, 23 invited lectures, 97 selected oral presentations, as well as 354 posters. A highlight of the symposium was the presentation of the Porter Medal to Prof. David Phillips of Imperial College London, UK, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to several fields of photochemistry. The title of his lecture was “Targeted sensitizers for photodynamic therapy”.The wide variety of fields encompassed by modern photochemistry is reflected by the list of sessions held within the symposium: Electron and Energy Transfer, Molecular Switches and Machines, Organic Photochemistry, Inorganic Photochemistry, Photochromic Systems, Solar Energy, Supramolecular Photochemistry, Nanoparticles, Photocatalysis, Ultrafast Spectroscopy, Theoretical Photochemistry, Exciton and Charge Dynamics, Microscopy, Nanoscopic Systems, Singlet Oxygen and Phototherapy, Photobiology, Fluorescent Labels, Photoactive Materials, Applied Photochemistry, and Organized Media. Most of the topics discussed were characterized by a fertile combination of fundamental insight, advanced techniques, and practical application. This issue of Pure and Applied Chemistry collects a number of papers based on plenary and invited lectures delivered at the symposium. I hope that this collection will help illustrate modern photochemistry not only as a lively and exciting research field but also as a powerful resource toward the solution of important practical problems.Franco ScandolaConference Editor

The possibility of partial renovation of the historical center of Tula – Tula Kremlin is discussed. The formation of atrium space in the North-Western part of the Kremlin is considered. This conversion recreates the lost historical integrity of the ancient ensemble and creates new possibilities of use of the historic center of the ancient Russian town. Initially, the urban space of the Tula Kremlin was limited by a wall, but with the lapse of time, the city went beyond that boundary. Initially, the Kremlin had all the fullness of urban functions, but the majority of these functions have been gradually lost, it evolved primarily in a large public center, and nowadays it has become an object of museum-tourist destination. The concept of "Kremlin" includes as a mandatory component outlined urban space, formation of which complies its own laws in the interaction of many different factors: system of spatial and visual relations, temples, city gates and towers. The reconstruction of historic integrity of ancient ensembles was begun within the framework of the Federal State Program, possible ways of its recovery are considered.

Historic centers have become first-line tourist destinations. In order to achieve sustainable development, it is essential to get to know the opinions of the host community on the impact of tourism, the positives, as well as the negatives. This paper aims to understand the residents’ opinions and perceptions of destinations as the historic cities. This research looks into the residents’ opinions on the impact of tourism in the historic city of Toledo, Spain. The results of a quantitative survey among 442 residents in the city of Toledo are presented. The study is a revision of the literature and analysis and explanation of an empiric study’s results. Descriptive statistics have been used, as well as factor analysis and non-parametric tests to analyze data. The main results point out that residents have a positive vision of tourism development, rather than negative. The economic importance of tourism and its ability to create jobs stand out. However, they also think that the historic center is being turned into a museum for tourists. Analyzing their opinions according to certain demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, some major differences come up, such as that the inhabitants of residential areas have a more positive opinion than those who live in the historic center. Understanding the perspective of the residents can help the managers and planners of the tourism in the city to play down the potential negative impact of tourism and to achieve support from the host community in regards to tourism.

Socio-technical transitions towards more sustainable modes of production and consumption are receiving increasing attention in the academic world and also from political and economic decision-makers. There is increasing demand for resource-efficient technologies and institutional innovations, particularly at the city level. However, it is widely unclear how processes of change evolve and develop and how they are embedded in different socio-spatial contexts. While numerous scholars have contributed to the vibrant research field around sustainability transitions, the geographical expertise largely has been ignored. The lack of knowledge about the role of spatial contexts, learning processes, and the co-evolution of technological, economical, and socio-political processes has been prominently addressed. Bridging approaches from Transition Studies and perspectives of Economic Geography, the paper presents conceptual ideas for an evolutionary and relational understanding of urban sustainability transitions. The paper introduces new perspectives on sustainability transitions towards a better understanding of socio-spatial contexts.

Climate change will impact cities’ infrastructure and urban dwellers, who often show differentiated capacity to cope with climate-related hazards. The Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are part of an emerging research field which uses global socioeconomic and climate scenarios, developed by the climate change research community, to explore how different socioeconomic pathways will influence future society’s ability to cope with climate change. While the SSPs have been extensively used at the global scale, their use at the local and urban scale has remained rare, as they first need to be contextualized and extended for the particular place of interest. In this study, we present and apply a method to develop multi-scale extended SSPs at the city and neighborhood scale. Using Boston, Massachusetts, as a case study, we combined scenario matching, experts’ elicitation, and participatory processes to contextualize and make the global SSPs relevant at the urban scale. We subsequently employed the extended SSPs to explore future neighborhood-level vulnerability to extreme heat under multiple plausible socioeconomic trajectories, highlighting the usefulness of extended SSPs in informing future vulnerability assessments. The large differences in outcomes hint at the enormous potential of risk reduction that social and urban planning policies could trigger in the next decades.

AbstractThe purpose of this text is the exhibition and analysis of public intervention procedures in the urban landscape of the city of Madrid. The ultimate goal of this analysis is to identify the public model for the urban landscape in Madrid. This text focuses on the analytical exposition of official documents rather than on their final conclusions, for which reason the denomination of Report corresponds. This report is organized in two parts: a theoretical exposition that frames the subsequent analysis of administrative instruments of intervention in the landscape. It is conceived as part of the Doctoral Thesis research titled "Recent Transformation of the Commercial Landscape in the Historic Center", bounded within a period of just ten years, marked by the crisis and economic deregulation, and in a territorial framework limited to the historic center of Madrid. This research is part of a general reflexion on the relationship between economic activity and urban landscape. The interest of this report for the investigation is about the utility of that public model for the urban landscape in Madrid as a parameter to assess the profitability of public and private efforts in improving the quality of the urban landscape.

In this direction, the centrality of the health services of Teresina has its beginning with the installation of Getúlio Vargas Hospital (1941) in the historic center of the city. Since then, several hospitals, laboratories and related activities have been installed, which is configured as their greatest concentration space of this city. But, from 2000, a process of decentralization of health services has begun to other city places, mainly to the more central districts of the East region. This way, it is aimed to analyze the space production of the centrality of the health services in the least region of Teresina, based on the testimony of the professionals and entrepreneurs of the districts of Fátima, Jóquei and São Cristóvão that deal with such services. It argues that the constitution of this new centrality of health services in Teresina is based on the search for the high income population of the city, which demands exclusive services and near their living places or of easier accessibility when compared to the ones found in the main downtown.

Keywords: Centrality. This article discusses the tourist refunctionalization of the Old Town of Old Havana was marked by two fundamental events: the declaration of the Center and the city's defensive system to Cultural Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO), in 1982, a fact that conferred international visibility to the group and the governmental decision to develop cultural tourism in this area. Since 1993, making the historic area attractive for commercialization, a fact that aggravated the socio-spatial contradictions. Through bibliographic review, documentary research and analysis of empirical results, we evaluate the renewal of the urban landscape, the displacement of a part of the low-income population, the arrival of the Cuban middle classes and the revaluation, even if informal, of the houses. These facts point to the existence of an emerging gentrification process in the Historic Center of Old Havana. Keywords: cultural heritage, touristic refunctionalization, historical center, Old Havana
