Sulphur is a component of plant amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and enzyme structures which influence the productivity of oil seed and total oil content. The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of sulphur on the seed yield and oil content of sesame in Bangladesh. The experiment comprised three varieties of sesame viz. Binatil-2, Binatil-3 and BARI Til-4 and six levels of sulphur (S) viz. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg S ha–1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Dry matter production, crop characters, yield components, seed yield and oil content were significantly influenced by variety, level of sulphur and their interaction. The highest dry matter production plant–1 at 50 DAS (17.56 g), plant height (101.3 cm), number of branches plant–1 (3.66),  number of pods plant-1 (41.56), number of seeds pod-1 (58.83),  seed yield    (747.2 kg ha-1), stover yield (2243.0 kg ha–1) and oil content (40.03%) were obtained in BARI Til-4 while the corresponding lowest values of all parameters were recorded in Binatil-2. In case of sulphur application, the highest dry matter production plant–1 at 50 DAS (20.81 g), plant height (109.7 cm), number of branches plant–1 (3.87),  number of pods plant–1 (46.13),  number of seeds pod-1 (56.67),  seed yield (800.0 kg ha–1), stover yield (2787 kg ha–1 ) and oil content (43.97%) were obtained when crop was fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 while the lowest seed yield (502.2 kg ha–1), stover yield (1550.0 kg ha–1) and oil content (32.80%) were obtained in control (0 kg S ha–1). BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 produced the highest dry matter plant–1 at 50 DAS (24.80 g), number of pods plant–1 (51.13), seeds pod–1 (62.0) and seed yield (1011.0 kg ha–1). The highest oil content (43.97%) was also recorded in BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1, which was as good as that of BARI Til-4 fertilized with 40 kg S ha–1. Therefore, BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 can be considered as a promising practice in respect of seed yield and oil content of sesame in Bangladesh. J. Bangladesh Agril. To compare the effects of varying seeding rate on the agronomic performance, phenology and seed quality of hybrid and conventional summer rape cultivars, four hybrid and two conventional summer rape cultivars were seeded at 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, 6.0 and 9.0 kg ha−1 at two locations for 3 yr. The hybrid cultivars were, very importantly, 24% higher yielding and produced 50% more total dry matter than the conventional cultivars. The hybrid cultivars were, on average, 1.3% lower in seed oil content, 1.0% higher in seed protein content and equal in sum of oil and protein in the seed compared with the conventional cultivars. The hybrid cultivars were on average, 1.3 d later to 50% flowering and 1.1 d later to maturity than the average for the conventional cultivars, (i.e., equal or earlier to flowering and maturity than Regent). The hybrid cultivars were also 3.9% lower in harvest index and 1.3 ppm lower in chlorophyll content than the conventional cultivars. In spite of these differences, there were no significant cultivar-by-seeding-rate interactions, indicating that the hybrid and conventional cultivars responded similarly to varying seeding rate. Lodging, days to 50% flowering, days to maturity, harvest index, survival, oil content and protein content displayed significant linear responses to varying seeding rate. Stand at maturity, seed yield and total dry matter production displayed significant linear and quadratic responses to varying seeding rate. Varying seeding rate had no effect on seed formation period, the sum of oil and protein content, or chlorophyll content. A seeding rate of 6 kg ha−1 maximized seed yield for both hybrid and conventional summer rape cultivars.Key words: Brassica napus, canola, seed quality, agronomy, phenology

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the suitability of the multivariate method of principal component analysis (PCA) using the GGE biplot software for grouping sunflower genotypes for their reaction to Alternaria leaf spot disease (Alternariaster helianthi), and for their yield and oil content. Sixty-nine genotypes were evaluated for disease severity in the field, at the R3 growth stage, in seven growing seasons, in Londrina, in the state of Paraná, Brazil, using a diagrammatic scale developed for this disease. Yield and oil content were also evaluated. Data were standardized using the software Statistica, and GGE biplot was used for PCA and graphical display of data. The first two principal components explained 77.9% of the total variation. According to the polygonal biplot using the first two principal components and three response variables, the genotypes were divided into seven sectors. Genotypes located on sectors 1 and 2 showed high yield and high oil content, respectively, and those located on sector 7 showed tolerance to the disease and high yield, despite the high disease severity. The principal component analysis using GGE biplot is an efficient method for grouping sunflower genotypes based on the studied variables.

The effect of N and P fertilization on the dry matter content, concentration of nutrients (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and their intake by the plant, production characteristics (achene yields, head diameter, 1000-seed weight, oil content and oil production) and the content of fatty acids (palmitic, stearic, palmitooleic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic) was evaluated in the one-year pot trial with sunflower (Helianthus annuus, L.). Nitrogen application had a positive effect on dry matter production and increased N intake by plants as early as the beginning of vegetation (4th true leaf). The effect of P on dry matter production was not markedly evident until the later growth stage (10th true leaf). At the end of the vegetation period the weight of plants of variants fertilised with N only and variants where P was applied evened out. Achene yields, head diameters, 1000-seed weight, oil content and oil production increased statistically significantly after N application. Of all the monitored characteristics the increased level of P in the soil affected only the 1000-seed weight. The application of both nutrients did not significantly change the content of fatty acids.

The study was carried out from June to December, 2014. The objective of this study was to determine a suitable topping time for sweet basil variety grown in the net house at Research and Development Center for Hi-Tech Agriculture Ho Chi Minh City. A two-factorial experiment was designed by the CRD (Completely Randomized Design) with three replications. Factor A consisted of three sweet basil varieties (TN12 as Control, TN33, and TN39) and the factor B was the topping times including untopping (the control), the topping when sweet basil at the four-leaves, at the six-leaves and at the eight-leaves period. The results showed that variety TN39 was suitable for extracting basil-oil because of the highest yield (3,365.4 kg/1,000 m2) and high total essential oil content (0.25%). Variety TN12 could be grown for fresh-eating spicy. The variety TN12 resulted in the fairly high yield (1,955.4 kg/1,000 m2) and total essential oil content (0.20%) with good taste. Topping the basil plant at the six-leaves period reached the highest yield of 2,172.3 kg/1,000 m2.

A significant place in solving the problem of increasing the yield of sunflower is taken by the improvement of the varietal agrotechnology of sunflower cultivation. The best technology of growing sunflower hybrids to obtain a high yield is described. In conditions of Luhansk region the best sunflower precursors are winter crops, corn, legumes, barley. In our case, winter wheat was a precursor of the sunflower. Recommendations for the soil treatment, application of mineral fertilizers, sowing time, seeding rates, and crop care were provided. In autumn, plowing to a depth of 25-27 cm was carried out. In the spring, in order to close the humidity by plowing, an alignment of the plow land was carried out. Due to the weak clogging with weeds, one pre-sowing cultivation was carried out to a depth of 5-6 cm. Herbicide was introduced directly before cultivation against the weeds. Hybrids resistant to: phomopsis, white rot of composite flowers, white rot of stems and downy mildew are recommended. Experiments were carried out on changing the width of the rows between the sunflower hybrids from 70 cm to 15 cm.  Every varieties of plant standing were presented to each variant of sowing; 70; 60; 50; 40 th/h. The studies were conducted on experimental plots of the Department of Biology and Agronomy of Taras Shevchenko. Luhansk National University. In experiments, hybrids of domestic breeding Jason, Hector, Basalt, Suchasnyk were planted; these hybrids cover the main morphotypes and groups of ripeness, which are most common in collective farms. The results showed that the methods of sowing influenced the quality of the seeds, but in most years there has been an increase in oil content on continuous sowing. The thickening of sunflower promotes an increase in oil content and a decrease in the protein content of seeds. The best seed quality was the Basalt hybrid.
