In the modern globalized world with rapid industrialization and urbanization the city has once again become the focus of modern social, economic and political life. Urban spaces and places have been the focus of research by many disciplines, including epidemiology, sociology, anthropology, and urban studies. In this chapter, the authors outline the importance and the role of culture in urban mental health employing various historical, sociological, and epidemiological contexts. The authors point out that modern multicultural approaches in viewing the metropolis can be conceptualized as a global hub of migration. This therefore becomes a place where individuals encounter the other and various boundaries between spaces and residence, and between wellness and illness, intersect. Acculturation to the urban places may take some time and the authors propose that the psychological process of acculturation is a useful beginning in terms of unpicking and understanding the phenomenology of identity formation and cross-cultural contact. The chapter traces the historical development of the city in parallel to the literature on psychosis and the city in developed and developing contexts, before critically examining the role of culture in informing our explanatory and interpretive frameworks of psychosis epidemiology.

This paper provides a cross-cultural account of gender diversity which explores the territory that is opened up when sex, gender, and sexual orientation, binaries are disrupted or displaced. Whilst many people who identify as trans or intersex see themselves as male or female, others identify in ways which destabilize sex/gender and sexual orientation binaries. The paper provides a typology of ways in which sex/gender diversity can be conceptualized, and draws out the implications for theorizing gender. It discusses the contributions made by the new wave of authors working in the field of transgender studies; authors who draw on and inform the sociology of sex and gender, feminisms, and poststructuralist theory. It based on empirical material from research carried out in India and the UK.

The aim of the present study was to compare different features of Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) in India and Belgium. We also explored whether the strength of the association between NSSI and disturbances in identity formation—a risk factor that can increase vulnerability to NSSI—was similar in young adults from India and Belgium. Data regarding NSSI and identity formation were collected from 182 young adults in India (56% females, mean age = 21.5 years, SD = 3.70, range = 17–38 years). The Belgian data used for matching were derived from four existing datasets. Of the 182 Indian cases, 138 cases could be matched with the Belgian sample on age, gender, and lifetime prevalence of NSSI. Lifetime prevalence of NSSI in the Indian sample was found to be around 21.4%, with higher prevalence in females than in males. Comparison of features of NSSI in India and Belgium indicated that the age of onset of NSSI was higher in the Indian sample (around 17 years) than the Belgian sample (around 15 years). Additionally, self-bruising behavior was more commonly reported in India and scratching/cutting was more often reported in Belgium. Finally, the Belgian sample reported intra-personal functions of NSSI more often than the Indian sample. Moderation analysis indicated that the associations between NSSI and identity confusion/integration were stronger in the Belgian sample compared to the Indian sample. Higher self-knowledge was protective against NSSI in both the Indian and the Belgian sample.

Citizens in China are exploring their own identities through various online practices. Different from the increased demand for social and economic rights, the opportunities to participate in social affairs and construct distinct cultural identities are the main concerns of cultural citizenship. This article explores crowdfunding as a practice of cultural citizenship by investigating the crowdfunding activities initiated by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in China. Through investigating the cultural rights that are performed and their impacts on identity formation of citizens, this article reveals the emerging mode of public engagement and participatory culture. During the process of crowdfunding, a new environmental and youth identity is shaped, and a connection between online and offline worlds is forged. Furthermore, non-profit crowdfunding has facilitated popular civic participation in both virtual and physical spaces under the censorship of the Chinese government. In this process, creativity is performed by networked individuals and groups when practicing cultural citizenship.

Renegades: Digital Dance Cultures from Dubsmash to TikTok interrogates the roles that Dubsmash, social media, and hip hop music and dance play in youth identity formation in the United States. It explores why Generation Z—so-called Zoomers—use social media dance apps to connect, how they use them to build relationships, how race and other factors of identity play out through these apps, how social media dance shapes a wider cultural context, and how community is formed in the same way that it might be in a club. These Zoomer artists—namely D1 Nayah, Jalaiah Harmon, TisaKorean, Brooklyn Queen, Kayla Nicole Jones, and Dr. Boffone’s high school students—have become key agents in culture creation and dissemination in the age of social media dance and music. These Black artists are some of today’s most influential content creators, even if they lack widespread name recognition. Their artistic contributions have come to define a generation. And yet, up until this point, the majority of influential Dubsmashers have not been recognized for their influence on US popular culture. This book tells their stories.

The chapter examines how Asian American female youth resist the Model Minority Stereotype (MMS). The author reports findings on the identity struggles of three youth who are raced as the “smart Chinese girls,” gendered as “the Chinese sorority sitting in the back of the room,” and classed as “low-income kids at a ghetto school in Chicago.” The findings discuss how teacher-student relationships impact youth identity formation, and how youth desire cultural identities free from racist discourse perpetuated through “racial epithet” (Embrick & Henricks, 2013). Re-conceptualizing the MMS as a “racial epithet” challenges educators to disrupt racialized discourses.
