Published data on flat grid purges allow to evaluate the efficiency of blade devices with different kinematic scheme of stages and design parameters. The corresponding computer program ODOS-GP04 and examples of numerical analysis of the efficiency of flat grids and spatial blade devices of axial stages with different combinations of design parameters was provided. Further development of the ODOS-GP04 program is described below, which makes it possible to perform an estimated calculation of the gas-dynamic characteristics of the stages designed using this program. Analysis of the calculated characteristics of a number of typical stages allows to draw a conclusion about the influence of the main design parameters. This article is primarily addressed to people who are developing their knowledge of the gas dynamics of axial compressors. Some results of calculations do not correspond to the published experimental data. The authors expect that this may attract the attention of specialists working in the field of gas dynamics of axial compressors.

The content of the article and the computer program are addressed to people who are improving their knowledge of gas dynamics of axial compressors. Some of the results may be of interest to specialists working professionally in this field.

The effects of tip clearance changes on efficiency in axial compressors are typically established experimentally. The ratio of change of efficiency with change of clearance gap varies significantly for different compressors in the published data. An analysis of this sensitivity range in terms of the blade and stage design parameters was initiated. The analysis revealed that the sensitivity range largely resulted from a derivation at constant flow of the efficiency decrement. It was also found that a generalized loss method of generating the sensitivities produced a much improved correlation of the change in efficiency with change in clearance over a variety of machines, configurations and speeds.

Axial compressors are widely used in many aerodynamic applications. The design of an axial compressor configuration presents many challenges. It is necessary to retool the design methodologies to take advantage of the improved accuracy and physical fidelity of these advanced methods. Here, a first-principles based multiobjective technique for designing single stage compressors is described. The study accounts for stage aerodynamic characteristics and rotor-stator interactions. The proposed methodology provides a way to systematically screen through the plethora of design variables. This method has been applied to a rotor-stator stage similar to NASA Stage 35. By selecting the most influential design parameters and by optimizing the blade leading edge and trailing edge mean camber line angles, phenomena such as tip blockages, blade-to-blade shock structures and other loss mechanisms can be weakened or alleviated. It is found that these changes to the configuration can have a beneficial effect on total pressure ratio and stage adiabatic efficiency, thereby improving the performance of the axial compression system.

Abstract Current developmental level of computers and numerical methods of gas dynamics makes it possible to optimize compressors using 3D CFD models. Design variants for the compressor can be automatically generated that best suit all the design requirements and limitations. However, the methods and tool for optimizing compressors are not sufficiently developed for the successful application. The problems lie in the large size of the calculation model, the solution time and the requirements for computer resources. In present study, a method for finding the optimal configuration of the blades of multi-stage axial compressors using 3D CFD modeling and commercial optimization programs as the main tools was developed. The basic parameters of the compressor (efficiency, pressure ratio, mass flow rate, etc.) can be improved using the created method correcting the shape of the blade profiles and their relative position. The method considers presence of various constraints. When developing the method, special attention was paid to the creation of an algorithm for parameterizing the blade shape and a program based on it, which can automatically change the shape of the axial compressor blades. They were used by the authors during optimization as a tool that converts variable parameters into the “new” blade geometry. Recommendations were also found on the rational settings for the CFD models used in the optimization of axial compressors. The paper provides a brief overview of several works related to the optimization of multi-stage gas turbine axial compressors for various purposes (number of stages from 3 to 15), successfully performed using the developed method. As a result, an increase was achieved in efficiency, pressure ratio and stability margins.

This paper presents a new methodology for quantifying compressor endwall blockage and an approach, using this quantification, for defining the links between design parameters, flow conditions, and the growth of blockage due to tip clearance flow. Numerical simulations, measurements in a low-speed compressor, and measurements in a wind tunnel designed to simulate a compressor clearance flow are used to assess the approach. The analysis thus developed allows predictions of endwall blockage associated with variations in tip clearance, blade stagger angle, inlet boundary layer thickness, loading level, loading profile, solidity, and clearance jet total pressure. The estimates provided by this simplified method capture the trends in blockage with changes in design parameters to within 10 percent. More importantly, however, the method provides physical insight into, and thus guidance for control of, the flow features and phenomena responsible for compressor endwall blockage generation.

Measurements have been performed in a low-speed high-reaction single-stage axial compressor. Data obtained within and downstream of the rotor, when correlated with the results of other investigations, provide a link between the existence of suction surface–hub corner separations, their associated loss mechanisms, and blade loading. Within the stator, it has been shown that introducing a small clearance between the stator blade and the stationary hub increases the efficiency of the stator compared to the case with no clearance. Oil flow visualizaton indicated that the leakage reduced the extensive suction surface–hub corner separation that would otherwise exist. A tracer gas experiment showed that the large radial shifts of the surface streamlines indicated by the oil flow technique were only present close to the blade. The investigation demonstrates the possible advantages of including hub clearance in axial flow compressor stator blade rows.

The clearance size of cantilevered stators affects the performance and stability of axial compressors significantly. Numerical calculations were carried out using the commercial software FINE/Turbo for a 2.5-stage highly loaded transonic axial compressor, which is of cantilevered stator for the first stage, at varying hub clearance sizes. The aim of this work is to improve understanding of the impact mechanism of hub clearance on the performance and the flow field in high flow turning conditions. The performance of the front stage and the compressor with different hub clearance sizes of the first stator has been analyzed firstly. Results show that the efficiency decreases as clearance size varies from 0 to 3% of hub chordlength, but the operating range has been extended. For the first stage, the efficiency decreases about 0.5% and the stall margin is extended. The following analysis of detailed flow field in the first stator shows that the clearance leakage flow and elimination of hub corner separation is responsible for the increasing loss and stall margin extending respectively. The effects of hub clearance on the downstream rotor have been discussed lastly. It indicates that the loss of the rotor increases and the flow deteriorates due to increasing of clearance size and hence the leakage mass flow rate, which mainly results from the interaction of upstream leakage flow with the passage flow near pressure surface. The affected region of rotor passage flow field expands in spanwise and streamwise direction as clearance size grows. The hub clearance leakage flow moves upward in span as it flows toward downstream.

Abstract The quest for greener, more efficient aircraft engines is the main driver for the development of innovative compression system designs. Reduced order design tools rely nevertheless on semi-empirical loss models, whose validity range is often not net or in general not verified. The present work aims at defining a set of loss correlations, which could readily be employed in the analysis and design process of modern transonic axial compressors. In part I, the main entropy generation mechanisms are described together with a review of the most commonly employed modelling approaches. Selected loss models are then deeper investigated and updated to increase both their range of validity and the accuracy of their predictions. In Part II, the effectiveness of the investigated models will be tested for one specific low aspect ratio axial compressor stage.

In many aerodynamic design parameters for the axial-flow compressor, three variables of tailored blading, blade lean and sweep were considered in the re-design efforts of a transonic single stage which had been designed in 1960’s NASA public domains. As Part 1, the re-design was limited to the stator vane only. For the original MCA (Multiple Circular Arc) blading, which had been applied at all radii, the CDA (Controlled Diffusion Airfoil) blading was introduced at midspan as the first variant, and the endwalls of hub and casing (or tip) were replaced with the DCA (Double Circular Arc) blading for the second variant. Aerodynamic performance was predicted through a series of CFD analysis at design speed, and the best aerodynamic improvement, in terms of pressure ratio/efficiency and operability, was found in the first variant of tailored blading. It was selected as a baseline for the next design efforts with blade lean, sweep and both combined. Among 12 variants, a case of positively and mildly leaned blades was found the most attractive one, relative to the original design, providing benefits of an 1.0% increase of pressure ratio at design flow, an 1.7% increase of efficiency at design flow, a 10.5% increase of the surge margin and a 32.3% increase of the choke margin.
