The orientation to English among university students in Japan is a complex and shifting amalgam of attitudes and experiences that shape engagement in the classroom. Although research on learner motivation has highlighted the instrumental value of EFL in terms of imagined identity and investment, motivation is also affected by social factors such as Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) policy and teaching practice encountered prior to university entrance. In this paper, I report on a qualitative analysis of orientations among high proficiency advanced students in a 1st-year EFL class at a large university in Tokyo. Findings suggest that paths of study and admission routes varied widely, that a strong commitment to English was coupled with low levels of confidence, and that orientation seemed to shift noticeably after entering university, as students sensed the possibility of attrition and a reduced scope of English study. At the same time, students welcomed the chance to engage with content and build ideas in English as the role of the EFL classroom took on increased importance. 日本の大学生の英語への指向は一様ではなくその態度やこれまでの経験も様々であり、英語の授業に対する意欲も日々変化している。学習者の動機づけに関する研究は、自己効力感や自己投資に関するEFLの手段的価値を強調しているが、動機づけは同時に文部科学省の方針や高校における入試に対する指導法のような社会的要因にも影響される。本論文では、質的分析の方法を用い、東京の大規模なある大学の上級レベル1年生の英語授業における、学生の英語に対する姿勢を分析した。その結果、大学に入るまでの学習経験や入学形態は様々であること、英語に対する学習意欲は高い反面自信があまりないこと、燃え尽きの可能性や学習範囲の狭窄を感じ始め、大学入学後は英語に対する姿勢が著しく変わること等が分かった。しかし同時に英語で意見を構築する機会を好意的に受け入れ、EFLの授業の役割がより重要になる傾向が示された。

The Japanese education system is currently in the midst of reforms, particularly with regards to way the English language is taught. At the university level, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is not only endeavoring to improve Japanese students' proficiency in English but also their intercultural communicative competence. This comes at a time when universities in Japan are trying to enhance their international competitiveness in an increasingly globalized world. The chapter argues that the approach to English education known as content and language integrated learning (CLIL), and the principles on which it is based, will help to address many of these issues of concern. By adopting this approach, not only will students be exposed to a more motivating learning experience, they will also be encouraged to critically examine issues from different cultural standpoints. Finally, the chapter examines instances of CLIL in Japanese universities where it is already being used, as well as effective ways in which it can be implemented from now on.

Culture collections of human pathogenic bacteria are maintained by two universities in Gifu and Osaka, Japan. Their activities are supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) under the National Bioresource Project (NBRP1). The purpose of this project is to collect, preserve, and provide bioresources, which are basic materials for life sciences research and to upgrade the bioresources responding to scientific demands of the present age by adding higher values through developing preservation technology, genome analysis, and others. This longitudinal study tracked five public junior and senior high school Japanese teachers of English (JTEs) who were sponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to study English and Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) pedagogy at a host university in Canada. This qualitative case study found that teachers who were not bound by practical constraints such as grammar-based entrance examinations or external influences such as a perceived need to conform to the practices of colleagues were able to incorporate what they had learned in Canada. However, high school teachers facing these constraints tended to abandon new practices in favor of traditional teaching methods such as grammar translation. These findings suggest that JTEs do benefit from overseas study, but that the extent of what they can incorporate into their regular teaching practice depends on the context in which they teach. The findings imply that host program planners and instructors could benefit from a closer look at constraints faced by third-year public high school teachers in particular, as it is they who face the greater number of obstacles to incorporating CLT into their regular teaching practice.

The field of molecular biology has provided great insights into the structure and function of key molecules. Thanks to this area of research, we can now grasp the biological details of DNA and have characterised an enormous number of molecules in massive data bases. These 'biological periodic tables' have allowed scientists to connect molecules to particular cellular events, furthering scientific understanding of biological processes. However, molecular biology has yet to answer questions regarding 'higher-order' molecular architecture, such as that of chromatin. Chromatin is the molecular material that serves as the building block for chromosomes, the structures that carry an organism's genetic information inside of the cell's nucleus. Understanding the physical properties of chromatin is crucial in developing a more thorough picture of how chromatin's structure relate to its key cellular functions. Moreover, by establishing a physical model of chromatin, scientists will be able to open the doors into the true inner workings of the cell nucleus. Professor Shin-ichi Tate and his team of researchers at Hiroshima University's Research Center for the Mathematics on Chromatin Live Dynamics (RcMcD), are attempting to do just that. Through a five-year grant funded by the Platform for Dynamic Approaches to Living Systems from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Tate is aiming to gain a clearer understanding of the structure and dynamics of chromatin.

This paper describes the conceptual design and cost estimation of a 600MW(t) HTGR-GT power plant, which has been completed in the framework of the HTGR-GT feasibility study project in the duration of FY 1996 to FY 2000. The project is assigned to JAERI by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) (former Science and Technology Agency) in Japan. The inlet and outlet gas temperatures in the reactor are 460°C and 850°C, respectively. Helium gas pressure is 6MPa. The gas turbine system type is an intercooled recuperative direct cycle. Designs of reactor and gas turbine are presented. The main feature of the plant is a relatively large 600 MW(t) HTGR, horizontal single shaft helium turbine and divided power conversion vessel, that is, a turbomachine vessel and heat exchanger one. Their main specifications and drawings are presented. As a result of cost estimation, an economically attractive construction cost and a power generation cost have been obtained.

Independent Learning Independent Campus (MBKM) was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Research and Technology to support the readiness of students to face challenges in the world of work by applying active learning. Documentary institutions in universities, namely libraries, archives, and museums, should become strategic partners in supporting the MBKM program because the documentary institution has all the necessary conditions, facilities, and infrastructure to succeed MBKM program. This study aimed to determine the readiness of documentary institutions in the university environment to exploit the opportunities and challenges and what obstacles they encountered. This study used the qualitative method and in-depth interviews for data collection and a literature study. The researcher concludes that the biggest challenges facing documentary institutions are regulation and the readiness of human resources. Due to this, changes to regulations and educational curricula and the introduction of new documentation of pure science are priorities in improving professional education providers in library science, archives, and museology.

This work is part of the project “Determining factors in the reading habits of Secondary Education students. A study from the variables of the educational context” (PR2017040), financed by the Own Research Plan of the University of Cadiz. The main objective of the study is focused on analyzing those determining factors that affect the formation of new readers in the school in a global and integrating way. Taking as a reference the idea of the ecosystem or ecological environment of Bronfenbrenner (2001), an analogy is made with the educational system and the agents that intervene in the reading habits of adolescents in their educational stage of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO). These approaches were used to review a Questionnaire on Reading Habits, which the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport presented in an ambitious Plan to Promote Reading in 2001 and to adapt it to the needs of the PR2017040 Project. The conclusions illustrate that this complex issue of reading habits cannot be studied with a questionnaire as the only research instrument, since it is necessary to give voice to the different agents that participate in the process and, therefore, agree with Molina et al. (2011) in proposing the design research model to understand and improve the educational reality through the consideration of natural contexts in all their complexity.
