Social media have improved the operations of public relations. The ability of social media to elicit immediate feedback has made social media veritable tools in the hands of public relations practitioners in counselling school management on corporate policies. This study explores the pattern of social media usage by public relations practitioners. It shows the level of impact made with the use of social media in public relations practice in influencing management on corporate policies. The study was guided by diffusion of innovation theory and system theory. Diffusion of innovation theory offers a solid and replicable framework for the process of moving an innovation through a social system over time. System theory deals with the interactivity that exist in an organisation as a social system. Using the descriptive design, questionnaire was administered on 170 purposively selected public relations practitioners in some selected institutions of higher learning across the country but only 120 responded. Findings show that public relations practitioners use social media in influencing top school management on corporate policies. This is evident as all the respondents affirmed that they use social media such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, among others to inform and influence top school management on corporate policies. The study concludes that social media are potent tools in influencing school’s policy formulation and implementation. The study recommends that institutions of higher learning should formulate and implement productive ICT policies and public relations practitioners should be trained regularly on the use of social media with a consequent expectation of migrating from the analogue to digital culture.

Social media allow people to communicate with others and this has increased online communication. There are numerous risks of attack on the use of internet and cyber criminals across the digital world. Cyber-crimes is the latest and the most sophisticated problem in the digital world. Cybercrime varies from computer fraud, unauthorized hacking, forgery, infringements of privacy, online gambling, propagation of harmful content, phishing, computer viruses, falsification of prostitution, theft, espionage, copyright infringement , financial crimes, sale of illegal articles, pornography, intellectual property crime, e-mail spoofing, cyber defamation and cyber stalking. The study was guided by the following objectives, to establish various forms of cybercrimes performed on social media, to examine the effects of cyber-crimes on the security of social media, to study the impact of cyber-crimes on social media security. The research population was used from the selected higher learning institutions and a sample size of 132 was used. Simple random sampling was used in sampling the respondents. A descriptive statistics analysis was done, comprising the generation of mean and standard deviation. SPSSv16.0 software was used to generate the mean and standard deviation. The findings show that many students share too much information through emails and social media which may pose threats to them. Most organization they have implemented multilayered security mechanisms information security may leak on the social sites. Cyber-bullying has spread widely especially are prone to the practice of cyber-bullying. Security attacks such as hacking, spoofing spamming cyber stalking Trojan, worms, viruses and exposure scams are common through social media, hence the ICT policy and government policy have address such issues. Higher learning institutions need to invest more resources in training students, awareness, research and development, IT security and social media crimes.

Student voice in this digital age and across higher learning institutions is increasing exponentially with the function of social media. Student voice provides a vibrant communication pathway to extended curriculum programme students in higher education institutions. Social media ensures active participation of extended curriculum programme students in generating views and ideas that define the higher learning environment and experience towards better learning conditions and outcomes. A systematic literature review was used in gathering scientific papers through trusted academic databases. The systematic literature review was conducted between the period of 1 April 2019 and 28 September 2019, by looking into the contents of articles covering the current research objectives. The study’s findings show that social media provides an effective and instant spread of the extended curriculum programme students’ voice across higher education learning institutions. It also allows the students in the extended curriculum programme to engage with each other and the institutional management promptly. Social media promotes extended curriculum programme students’ voice in reaching the right audience at the right time. The results of this study are key for extended curriculum programme students, lecturers, and university management in understanding and applying social media effectively and in bringing transformation to South African higher education institutions and beyond.


The Malaysian government sees education as one of the important factors in the country’s advancement. In order to achieve this, Malaysia needs to have an up-to-date technology such as Social Media Technologies (SMTs) to support the learning system in Higher learning institutions (HLIs). There is a great argument that 21st Century students learn differently. SMTs help to form a student-centered environments among the digital generation. It bridges a gap in knowledge in relation between SMTs and its impact in HLIs. Mobile learning and SMTs deliver the ability to communicate with academicians and students. HLIs should take this opportunity to connect SMTs to design a modern educational setting that will advance their learning experiences. It shows that SMTs have a great value for academic associated, particularly as a teaching and learning tool. HLIs and students have identified numerous challenges related to the adoption process. This study reviews and evaluates the SMTs related research articles published in academic journals between the year 2010 to 2018, mainly in HLIs fields. It identifies the impacts of SMTs on both students and academicianss in HLIs and associate how SMTs can be effectively connected to Mobile learning to support and enhance the students’ learning in Malaysia
