Two sturgeon species, Acipenser ruthenus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Acipenser baerii (Brandt, 1869), inhabit the Irtysh basin. In 2018, we received some “atypical” specimens of sturgeon, which were similar to A. ruthenus but had a number of pronounced external differences. The hybrids A. ruthenus × A. baerii, named “oster”, can sometimes be caught in natural habitats in the Ob and the Yenisei rivers. Despite the development of methods for the genetic identification of sturgeons, the molecular genetic characteristics of the hybrids of A. baerii and A. ruthenus have not been carried out. The purpose of this study is to develop a complex of morphological and genetic characters to identify the hybrid of A. ruthenus and A. baerii from the Irtysh River. We used a complex of morphological and genetic methods to compare the putative hybrids with parental species The putative hybrids were similar to A. ruthenus in the number of dorsal scutes, the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, the structure of stamens on the first gill arch, and the presence of fringe on the tendrils. The hybrids were similar to A. baerii in size and weight values, the structure of dorsal scutes, the number of lateral and ventral scutes, and the number of gill rakers on the first gill arch. Genotyping of putative hybrids by using the Inter Simple Sequence Repeat (ISSR) markers revealed the presence of sites characteristic of both parental species. The fragment of the control region of mitochondrial DNA in the hybrids matched to that of A. baerii that allowed us to identify females of A. baerii as maternal individuals of the hybrids. Possible causes and factors promoting interspecific hybridization of A. ruthenus and A. baerii were studied. This is the first described fact of the appearance of sturgeon hybrids in the Ob-Irtysh basin. It is necessary to continue monitoring studies to identify the number of these hybrids in the ecological system of the Irtysh River. The data set of morphological characters and genetic methods can be used to identify the hybrids of A. ruthenus and A. baerii.

Outcomes of the diagnostic analysis of the water use system functioning in the Irtysh River transboundary basin located on the territories of Kazakhstan, China and Russia have been analyzed from the standpoint of strategic governing. Water resources have been assessed; several countries’ role in the Tobol, Ishym, and Irtysh per se basins water situation formation has been outlined. Current issues of water use in the basin’s national segments have been revealed, and prospects and opportunities of their solution proposed in different strategic documents concerning development of the relevant countries and regions have been considered. It has been noted that at present China ”regulates” water runoff in the Irtysh upper reaches and its strategy of the west-northern (bordering to Kazakhstan) territories development stipulates further expansion of the water use up to almost 45% of the runoff formed on its territory. Nowadays Kazakhstan also intends to implement plans of anticipatory growth according to the strategy of development up to 2050. Russian regions in the Irtysh basin are the end water users and now the steppe areas and the city of Omsk experience water resources depletion. Some territories of Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk oblasts located in the Tobol basin are in the stressed water situation, especially acute during the low-water periods. The Ishym basin on the territory of Russia also has lost its water content as a considerable share of its runoff is taken for water supply of the rapidly developing capital of Kazakhstan. The analysis outcomes support the necessity of the agreed institutional frameworks establishment for water use management in different national segment of the international basin.

The utilization of elm leaf flavonoids as biochemical markers for the identification of artificial and natural hybrids of elm species is discussed. Two to 11 individuals from controlled crosses of Ulmuscarpinifolia Gled., Ulmuspumila L., Ulmusparvifolia Jacq., and Ulmusjaponica (R.) Sarg. were examined. Five to seven individuals from each parental species, and a number of putative hybrids between U. carpinifolia and U. pumila that naturally occur in central and northern Italy, were also examined. Quantitative data on leaf flavonoid glycosides were obtained by means of high-performance thin layer chromatography and examined by multivariate discriminant analysis. The results show that it is possible to identify the hybrid obtained between these species even if the parents are unknown, provided a number of individuals of the parental species are examined; therefore, it is also possible to certify putative hybrids. The higher variability of the flavonoid glycoside data of U. carpinifolia and U. pumila and the probable presence of F2 generation individuals make the certification of natural hybrids between these two species in some cases difficult or even impossible.

Taeniopteryx araneoides Klápalek, 1902, a stonefly species with brachypterous males, known historically from the Danube, Elbe, and Dniester rivers, but considered to be extinct at least in Europe for more than a century. This species has also been doubtfully reported from Krasnoyarsk, Central Siberia. However, we report this species to be still thriving in the Irtysh River at the cities of Omsk (West Siberia, Russia) and Pavlodar (North Kazakhstan). The occurrence of this species reported least fifty years ago from the Yenisey River at Krasnoyarsk, Russia is considered possible. Unlike the widespread Palaearctic T. nebulosa (Linnaeus, 1758) that occurs in a broad range of stream types, T. araneoides is a potomon species, apparently confined to large rivers. In this habitat, it appears vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts and may be unable to compete with T. nebulosa. The construction of dams and reservoirs has apparently extirpated T. araneoides from most of its former geographical range.

Background: Cystic echinococcosis, a major public health and economic concern, is a zoonotic helminth infection with worldwide distribution. This study was conducted to investigate the genetic characteristics of hydatid cysts isolated from human and livestock in Hamadan region, western Iran during 2016-2017. Methods: Ten human hydatid cysts and 40 animal hydatid cysts including 32 sheep, 5 cattle and 3 goats were genotyped by PCR amplification of two mitochondrial genes, cox1 and nad1. Genetic identification of the isolates was performed by using bioinformatics software and mtDNA nucleotide sequences of the parasite, available in GenBank database. Results: The PCR amplification was successfully carried out on 50 hydatid cyst isolates and then the nucleotide sequencing was conducted. The sequence analysis of the samples found that the isolates belonged to E. granulosus sensu stricto including G1 (42/50, 84%), G2 (4/50, 8%) and G3 (4/50, 8%) genotype. The G1 genotype was detected in human (8/10, 80%), sheep (26/32, 81%), cattle (5/5, 100%) and goat (3/3, 100%) hydatid cysts. The G2 and G3 genotypes were found only in sheep and human isolates. Alignment analysis of the cox1 and nad1 gene sequences revealed thirteen and ten sequence types, respectively. Conclusion: G1 was the prevailing genotype of E. granulosus in the area and dog-sheep transmission cycle should be considered when implementing hydatidosis control programs. In addition, high genetic diversity was detected among the hydatid cyst isolates.

Abstract The article presents the most complete data on the distribution of ectoparasites in the boreal Palaearctics (gamasid mites of the genera Spinturnix, Macronyssus, and Steatonyssus, bat flies of the family Nycteribiidae, fleas of the family Ischnopsyllidae) and its preferences for the hosts. On the basis of these data as well as the data for the resettlement of bats in Eurasia 30 species of boreal bat ectoparasites combined into three faunal complexes (Transpalaearctic, European-Ural and Siberian-Far East) and two groups (European-Ural species, penetrating to the east and Siberian-Far East, penetrating to the west). The boundary between the European-Ural and Siberian-Far East faunal complexes is situated presumably along the Irtysh River. The resulting zoning provides a new look at the parasitocenosis of ectoparasites in the taiga zone of the Palaearctics.

In the summer period (June-July) of 2018 on the Irtysh river (the Tobolsk region) in the control catches of sterlet there were found specimens with pronounced differences from individuals inhabiting this water area. Differences were found in the form of bone plates and linear-weight characteristics. Later, local fishermen reported on many cases of specimens having the above differences. Reports about the similar species came from the Uvat region. In order to establish the belonging of these individuals to a particular family there have been investigated meristic features which are considered diagnostic for sturgeon species, as well as for hybrids. In the result of the study there was made a conclusion about belonging of these specimens to the genus Acipenser and, most likely, to the sterlet species.

Accurate simulation of snow cover process is of great significance to the study of climate change and the water cycle. In our study, the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD) and ERA-Interim were used as driving data to simulate the dynamic changes in snow depth and snow water equivalent (SWE) in the Irtysh River Basin from 2000 to 2018 using the Noah-MP land surface model, and the simulation results were compared with the gridded dataset of snow depth at Chinese meteorological stations (GDSD), the long-term series of daily snow depth dataset in China (LSD), and China’s daily snow depth and snow water equivalent products (CSS). Before the simulation, we compared the combinations of four parameterizations schemes of Noah-MP model at the Kuwei site. The results show that the rainfall and snowfall (SNF) scheme mainly affects the snow accumulation process, while the surface layer drag coefficient (SFC), snow/soil temperature time (STC), and snow surface albedo (ALB) schemes mainly affect the melting process. The effect of STC on the simulation results was much higher than the other three schemes; when STC uses a fully implicit scheme, the error of simulated snow depth and snow water equivalent is much greater than that of a semi-implicit scheme. At the basin scale, the accuracy of snow depth modeled by using CMFD and ERA-Interim is higher than LSD and CSS snow depth based on microwave remote sensing. In years with high snow cover, LSD and CSS snow depth data are seriously underestimated. According to the results of model simulation, it is concluded that the snow depth and snow water equivalent in the north of the basin are higher than those in the south. The average snow depth, snow water equivalent, snow days, and the start time of snow accumulation (STSA) in the basin did not change significantly during the study period, but the end time of snow melting was significantly advanced.
