Distance learning environments are increasingly offering more comfort to both learners and teachers, allowing them to carry out their academic tasks remotely, especially in critical times where it is difficult, or even dangerous, to bring these actors together in one physical place. Nevertheless, These same environments are complaining about the massive dropout numbers among their learners. Therefore, designing new intelligent systems capable of reducing these numbers becomes imperative. This paper proposes a new approach capable of identifying and assisting endangered learners experiencing difficulties by monitoring and analyzing their behavior inside the e-learning environment. By building dynamic models to follow the learners’ current situation, the proposed approach could intervene autonomously to save learners identified as struggling. Relying on distributed artificial intelligence instead of humans to closely monitor learners within distance learning environments can be very effective when identifying struggling learners. Furthermore, targeting these learners with early enough and carefully designed interventions can reduce the number of dropouts.

The article deals with the main strategies, methods and objectives of synchronous and asynchronous E-Learning Modes from a scientific and practical point of view. A detailed description of the synchronous and asynchronous online-learning at different historical stages is presented. The task of the distance education in light of the trends of modern society and its role in the implementation of professional and social aspirations of an student is shown. The basic problems of contemporary ICT, the difference and peculiarities of the synchronous and asynchronous methods of e-communication are determined. The general tendencies, content, sources, means, forms and methods of ICT implementation in terms of strict quarantine circumstances are highlighted. Certain ICT tools implemented by higher educational establishments to provide distance learning in the educational institutions are defined. The key ways of overcoming the contradictions that arise in the path of self-improvement of a student in the present are called. The application of ICT tools by the teaching staff as an essential and effective instrument to modernize the educational process is emphasized. Online-learning environments, namely synchronous and asynchronous ones, essential to provide distance education, are mentioned. Various forms of interaction involved in synchronous and asynchronous modes are pointed out. The current practices of synchronous and asynchronous e-learning/teaching in English language are established. The results of the case study of the effectiveness of a/synchronous environments towards better English language learning are evaluated. The analysis of the strategy used in distance learning is presented. The leading instruments and tools for synchronous and asynchronous online-learning are stressed on. The description of "high degree of interactivity" between participants who are separated from each other geographically and in time by asynchronous learning environments is provided. The basic measures for the introduction of distance learning technologies in the educational institution, which do not contradict the principles of pedagogy, but supplement and promote the development of the process of education, are formulated. The preferences of students as for methods used during remote education are noted. Basic challenges for teachers, institutions, and students, provided by both synchronous and asynchronous modes of distance learning, are described.

During recent decades there has been an extensive progress towards several Artificial Intelligence (AI) concepts, such as that of intelligent agent. Meanwhile, it has been established that emotions play a crucial role concerning human reasoning and learning. Thus, developing an intelligent agent able to recognize and express emotions has been considered an enormous challenge for AI researchers. Embedding a computational model of emotions in intelligent agents can be beneficial in a variety of domains, including e-learning applications. However, until recently emotional aspects of human learning were not taken into account when designing e-learning platforms. Various issues arise when considering the development of affective agents in e-learning environments, such as issues relating to agents’ appearance, as well as ways for those agents to recognize learners’ emotions and express emotional support. Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) with empathetic behaviour have been suggested to be one effective way for those agents to provide emotional feedback to learners’ emotions. There has been some valuable research towards this direction, but a lot of work still needs to be done to advance scientific knowledge.

This chapter presents some of the possibilities and approaches that are used in the application of AI (artificial intelligence) and AR (augmented reality) in the new learning environments. AI will add another dimension to distance learning or eLearning that in some cases already includes AR (augmented reality) virtual learning environments. Because of this advent in available technology and the impact it will have on learning, assessment of newly structured parameters and their impact on student outcomes is crucial when measuring student learning. For some of us there might be a concern about the domination of AI as seen in the movie The Terminator, but we can take ease in the notion that it is not only AI versus humans. A new version of human augmented intelligence (HI) is being developed as we speak.

The expansion of computer networks has at the same time given impetus to the distance learning environments. E-learning systems are also advanced and more efficient. However, these platforms offer such complex teaching functionalities that designers find themselves poorly equipped to succeed in their engineering processes. This article presents a tool that makes it easier for designers to produce educational content according to the Competency-Based Approach (CBA). We propose an implementation of the CBA after its modeling via ontology. Our module can be grafted to any author system oriented pedagogy based skills. We have advocated for Service for Oriented Architecture as a software solution to model our business process that consists of a set of interconnected services that are modeled and implemented. The proposed system is the result of a coordina-tion of, services, incorporating the order of competences explained by a distance education, which integrates and interacts according to an orchestration plan.

The current study aims to develop smart learning environments in Saudi universities in line with the future requirements of artificial intelligence. To achieve this goal, a systematic review was conducted on studies published on Scopus and Google Scholar databases from 1990 until 2021 on the development of e-learning in the light of artificial intelligence (in addition to the relevant Arab studies). First, a list of challenges and opportunities for developing smart learning environments according to the future requirements of artificial intelligence was composed. Then, a questionnaire was prepared and reviewed by several academic experts in educational technology in Saudi universities. The study results include many challenges expected to be encountered in the smart learning environments in Saudi universities concerning the future preconditions for artificial intelligence. It also presented a number of opportunities and procedures for facing such challenges and exploiting the opportunities. Finally, some recommendations and suggestions were presented.

This article describes the views on the architecture of distributed AI systems based on the simulated bio-neurons representing the basis for the bio-neural circuits, which represent distributed AI subsystems and serve as microservices for the AI client-side systems. The article also describes the interface and the demands to the protocol of communication with the distributed subsystems of the AI, the ways of tuning the synaptic contacts in the brand new neural circuits, which represent the distributed AI systems, and finally, the new approach to communication with such the systems based on the new computer language, which will be used in construction and tuning of such the AI systems.

One of the most closely investigated topics in e-learning research has always been the effectiveness of adaptive learning environments. The technological evolutions that have dramatically changed the educational world in the last six decades have allowed ever more advanced and smarter solutions to be proposed. The focus of this paper is to depict the three main dimensions that have driven research in the e-learning field and the evolution of the technological approaches adopted for the purposes of building advanced educational environments for distance learning. Then, the three different approaches adopted by the authors are discussed; these consist of a multi-agent system, an adaptive SCORM compliant package and an e-learning recommender system.

Through a series of projects carried out by the Computer–Human Interaction and COllaboration (CHICO) group of the University of Castilla-La Mancha, some proposals are presented to improve the current e-Learning systems by making use of different paradigms of human-computer interaction. Synchronous and asynchronous collaborative systems, ubiquitous computing, and augmented reality can improve the current learning environments. The use of artificial intelligence mechanisms for both learner support and assessment complements these techniques. Emphasis is also placed on the use of automatic application generation techniques using models.
