A summary of the numbers of species of the 83 families of Hymenoptera recorded in Canada is provided. In total, 8757 described species are recorded compared to approximately 6000 in 1979, which is a 46% increase. Of the families recognized in 1979, three have been newly recorded to Canada since the previous survey: Anaxyelidae (Anaxyleoidea), Liopteridae (Cynipoidea), and Mymarommatidae (Mymarommatoidea). More than 18,400 BINs of Canadian Hymenoptera are available in the Barcode of Life Data Systems (Ratnasingham and Hebert 2007) implying that nearly 9650 undescribed or unrecorded species of Hymenoptera may be present in Canada (and more than 10,300 when taking into account additional species that have not been DNA barcoded). The estimated number of unrecorded species is very similar to that of 1979 (10,637 species), but the percentage of the fauna described/recorded has increased from 36% in 1979 to approximately 45% in 2018. Summaries of the state of knowledge of the major groups of Hymenoptera are presented, including brief comments on numbers of species, biology, changes in classification since 1979, and relevant taxonomic references.

A thorough survey of the members of Solanaceae was carried out in Sirumalai Hills and occurrences of six additional species of Solanaceae hitherto not reported from Sirumalai Hills is reported here. Of these, Solanum americanum Mill. var. odishense Kalidass & P. Murugan turned out to be a new report for the state of Tamil Nadu and Solanum pseudocapsicum L. an addition to Solanaceae of Eastern Ghats. A brief description with photographs and other relevant notes is provided for each species for easy identification.

A survey of the archeological and paleontological literature allowed a compilation of Holocene records of mammals in Nebraska. This survey identified Holocene records from 338 sites in 62 of the 93 Nebraska counties. These counties were located throughout state, but there was a concentration of sites in southwestern Nebraska where there were 27 fossil sites in Frontier County and 22 in Harlan County. Fossils sites were underrepresented in the Sand Hills region. Records of fossil mammals covered the entire Holocene period from 13,000 years ago until AD 1850. A minimum of 57 species (with eight additional species potentially present) representing six orders of mammals were represented in the compilation—four species of Lagomorpha, four species of Soricomorpha, 17 species of Carnivora (with three additional species potentially present), one species of Perissodactyla, six species of Artiodactyla, and 25 species of Rodentia (with five additional species potentially present). The remains of bison were found at 276 sites, which was more than for any other species in the state. Additional species that formed the main portion of the diet of Native Americans were the next most abundant in the fossil record—deer, pronghorn, and wapiti. That these food species dominated in the Holocene record was to be expected because fossils were recovered primarily from archeological sites.

At the time the genus Attacobius Mello-Leitão, 1925 was first acknowledged as a member of the subfamily Corinninae, Corinnidae, by Platnick & Baptista (1995), only three species were recognized. Since then, that number has increased to 15 currently valid species (Bonaldo & Brescovit 1998; 2005; Pereira-Filho et al. 2018). Recently we had the opportunity to discover an additional species of Attacobius, collected in association with fire ants of the genus Solenopsis Westwood in the State of Goiás, Midwest Brazil, a region that harbors a large portion of the Brazilian Cerrado, one of the most threatened savannas in the planet. Attacobius lavape n. sp., described below, appears to belong to the same group of species as A. verhaaghi Bonaldo & Brescovit, 1998 and A. lamellatus Bonaldo & Brescovit, 2005, since these three species share, in the male palp, the presence of an unsclerotized median lobe on the retrolateral tibial apophysis (Figs 9, 11).

Polypedilum (Tripodura) enshiense Song & Wang sp. n. and P. (Tripodura) jianfengense Song & Wang sp. n. are described and illustrated as male imagines from China. P. (Uresipedilum) paraconvictum Yamamoto, Yamamoto & Hirowatari, 2016 is recorded from China for the first time. Cytochrome coxidase subunit I (COI) sequence of above species are uploaded to Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD).

The first records of Odonata from Maine are given by Hagen (1861), who mentioned five species as occurring in the state. In a few later papers (Hagen, 1873, 1874, and 1875, and Walsh, 1863) additional species were recorded from Maine, bringing the total to 27 in 1875.

The Neuroptera of Canada consists of 101 extant species, an increase of 26 (35%) since the previous assessment of the fauna in 1979. More than 48 additional species are believed to occur in Canada based largely on recent DNA evidence and new distribution records. The Barcode Of Life Data System (BOLD) currently includes 141 Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) for Canadian Neuroptera. Canadian fossils have thus far yielded 15 species in three families of Neuroptera.

Supervised training of human activity recognition (HAR) systems based on body-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs) is often constrained by the typically rather small amounts of labeled sample data. Systems like IMUTube have been introduced that employ cross-modality transfer approaches to convert videos of activities of interest into virtual IMU data. We demonstrate for the first time how such large-scale virtual IMU datasets can be used to train HAR systems that are substantially more complex than the state-of-the-art. Complexity is thereby represented by the number of model parameters that can be trained robustly. Our models contain components that are dedicated to capture the essentials of IMU data as they are of relevance for activity recognition, which increased the number of trainable parameters by a factor of 1100 compared to state-of-the-art model architectures. We evaluate the new model architecture on the challenging task of analyzing free-weight gym exercises, specifically on classifying 13 dumbbell execises. We have collected around 41 h of virtual IMU data using IMUTube from exercise videos available from YouTube. The proposed model is trained with the large amount of virtual IMU data and calibrated with a mere 36 min of real IMU data. The trained model was evaluated on a real IMU dataset and we demonstrate the substantial performance improvements of 20% absolute F1 score compared to the state-of-the-art convolutional models in HAR.

Abstract Background Tracking general trends in strategic purchasing of health financing mechanisms will highlight where country demands may exist for technical support and where progress in being made that offer opportunities for regional learning. Health services in Abia State, Nigeria are funded from general tax-revenues (GTR), and a new state social health insurance scheme (SSHIS) is proposed to overcome the failings of the GTR and expand coverage of services. This study examined purchasing functions within the GTR and the proposed SSHIS to determine if the failings in GTR have been overcome, identify factors that shape health purchasing at sub-national levels, and provide lessons for other states in Nigeria pursuing a similar intervention. Methods Data was collected through document review and key informant interviews. Government documents were retrieved electronically from the websites of different organizations. Hard copies of paper-only files were retrieved from relevant government agencies and departments. Interviews were conducted with seven key personnel of the State Ministry of Health and State Health Insurance Agency. Thematic analysis of data was based on a strategic health purchasing progress tracking framework which delves into the governance arrangements and information architecture needed for purchasing to work well; and the core purchasing decisions of what to buy; who to buy from; and how to buy. Results There are differences in the purchasing arrangements of the two schemes. Purchaser-provider split does not exist for the GTR, unlike in the proposed SSHIS. There are no data systems for monitoring provider performance in the GTR-funded system, unlike in the SSHIS. Whereas GTR is based on a historical budgeting system, the SSHIS proposes to use a defined benefit package, which ensures value-for-money, as the basis for resource allocation. The GTR lacks private sector engagement, provider accreditation and contracting arrangements while the SSHIS will accredit and engage private providers through selective contracting. Likewise, provider payment is not linked to performance or adherence to established standards in the GTR, whereas provider payment will be linked to performance in the SSHIS. Conclusions The State Social Health Insurance has been designed to overcome many of the limitations of the budgetary allocation to health. This study provides insights into the enabling and constraining factors that can be used to develop interventions intended to strengthen the strategic health purchasing in the study area, and lessons for the other Nigeria states with similar characteristics and approaches.

A literature survey has been completed in order to determine plant species that have been considered rare, and also plant species that are potentially rare. Dr. Stan Welsh of the Botany and Range Science Department of Brigham Young University (Provo, Utah) was contacted personally during the field season. His experience in the region has provided a list of additional species that are considered rare for the state of Utah and occur on specific sites near the National Park (Table 1). It is possible that these additional rare species may occur within the boundaries of the park.

Abstract Falling sequencing costs and large initiatives are resulting in increasing amounts of data available for investigator use. However, there are informatics challenges in being able to access genomic data. Performance and storage are well-appreciated issues, but precision is critical for meaningful analysis and interpretation of genomic data. There is an inherent accuracy vs. performance trade-off with existing solutions. The most common approach (Variant-only Storage Model, VOSM) stores only variant data. Systems must therefore assume that everything not variant is reference, sacrificing precision and potentially accuracy. A more complete model (Full Storage Model, FSM) would store the state of every base (variant, reference and missing) in the genome thereby sacrificing performance. A compressed variation of the FSM can store the state of contiguous regions of the genome as blocks (Block Storage Model, BLSM), much like the file-based gVCF model. We propose a novel approach by which this state is encoded such that both performance and accuracy are maintained. The Negative Storage Model (NSM) can store and retrieve precise genomic state from different sequencing sources, including clinical and whole exome sequencing panels. Reduced storage requirements are achieved by storing only the variant and missing states and inferring the reference state. We evaluate the performance characteristics of FSM, BLSM and NSM and demonstrate dramatic improvements in storage and performance using the NSM approach.
