In the age of ICT, the concept of institutional repository has arisen, which has become a very essential mode of accessing and sharing information. Institutional repositories are digital collections of the outputs created within a university or research institution. This chapter discusses the growth of institutional repositories in India. This chapter is a consideration of some of the important aspects related with institutional repositories. The chapter also explores the trends at the global and national levels of institutional repositories. The present chapter also discusses some important software, which is being used by institutional repositories of various organizations worldwide.

<p><strong><em>Abstract</em></strong><strong><em>; </em></strong><em>Institutional repositories development has drawn the attention of many scholars throughout the world. Using the keywords ‘institutional repositories’, there are over 300 peer-reviewed articles related on the topic has been indexed in Library, Information Science, &amp; Technology Abstracts (LISTA) and SCOPUS. There are also hundreds of theses, dissertations, and websites dedicated on this blooming trends. These are proofs that the importance of IR in higher education has been acknowledged by many professionals in the field. T</em><em>his paper aims at clarifying the role of repositories in strengthening scholarly communication in higher education and research institution and explaining some basic repositories concepts (types of repositories and their characteristics), as well as exploring its relations with open access movement, the development ideas, and resources that could be kept in repositories and deposit policies.</em></p><p><strong>Abstrak;</strong> Pengembangan <em>institutional repositories</em> telah banyak menyita perhatian dari kalangan ilmiah di seluruh dunia. Melalui kata kunci <em>‘institutional repositories’</em>, ada lebih dari 300 artikel terulas mitra bestari yang berhubungan dengan topik ini, yang telah terindeks di <em>Library, Information Science, &amp; Technology Abstracts (LISTA)</em><em>, </em>dan <em>SCOPUS</em>. Terdapat juga ratusan tesis, disertasi, dan <em>website</em> yang mengulas <em>trend</em> ini. Inilah bukti bahwa pentingnya <em>institutional repositories (IR)</em> telah dipahami oleh para profesional di bidangnya. Tulisan ini akan menjelaskan aturan-aturan <em>repository</em> dalam memperkuat komunikasi ilmiah di perguruan tinggi dan lembaga riset, menjelaskan konsep-konsep dasar <em>repositories</em>, termasuk tipe-tipe <em>repository</em> dan karakteristiknya. Tulisan ini juga akan memperdalam konsep <em>repositories</em> dalam hubungannya dengan gerakan <em>open access</em>, pengembangan ide-ide, sumber-sumber ilmiah yang dapat disimpan di <em>repositories</em>, serta kebijakan penyimpanan di dalamnya.</p><p> </p>

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to be concerned with the motivations and resistance among an institutional repository (IR) stakeholder – the Library and Information Science (LIS) academicians – with respect to Green Road open access publishing in an inter-institutional repository. Design/methodology/approach – The answers were identified from 47 LIS faculty from three library schools in Malaysia who reported awareness of what an IR is and having had experience in contributing resources to digital repositories. Data were collected using survey and interviews. Findings – The results highlighted the LIS faculty on their motivation to share their intellectual profile, research and teaching resources in an inter-institutional repositories and why the reluctance in contributing. The study reveals that the major motivation to share resources for those practicing self-archiving is related to performance expectancy, social influence, visible and authoritative advantage, career benefit and quality work. The major resistance to share scholarly research output through self-archiving in institutional repositories for those practicing self-archiving is concern on plagiarism, time and effort, technical infrastructure, lack of self-efficacy and insularity. Practical implications – Knowing what conditions predict motivation and resistance to contribute to IRs would allow IR administrators to ensure greater and more effective participation in resource-sharing among LIS academic community. If this resistance is addressed aptly, IRs can be of real benefit to their teaching, scholarship, collaborations, and publishing and to the community that they serve. Originality/value – The first study that has explored the ways LIS academics respond to a situation where knowledge sharing in academe has now been made mandatory through an IR and what makes them resist to do so.

This paper examines the user-aware of institutional repositories in Jadavpur University. The main objective of this study is to investigate the awareness of Institutional Repository (IR) in an academic institution and different aspects associated with it, such as, software, sources for user’s awareness, motivators for developing a repository, demand of the users in changing paradigms from traditional to digital environment, etc. In the present days, libraries are also adopting the latest technologies to provide best possible services in user friendly form. This paper also describes the potential role of institutional repositories and its easiness and simplicity of use are attracting more patrons in the use of institutional repositories. Only a wide range of user awareness is needed for proper usage of its beauty. Entirely this paper is based on a critical study, which measures the utility of institutional repositories in users’ point of view.

This case is about the influence of the Internet on scholarly communication and the emergence of various access-to-knowledge initiatives. Major emphasis was placed on Institutional Repositories (IRs) using a practical example of its evolution at the Redeemer’s University (RUN), Nigeria. RUN was established in 2005 by the Redeemed Christian Church of God with the mission to develop into a global university that is able to contribute to the amelioration of the problems facing Nigeria, Africa, and the world. To achieve its mission, RUN created a development hexagon, which resulted in the need to deploy its RUN Institutional Repository (RUNIR). Consequently, RUNIR deployment, which began in 2008, formed the major theme of the case reported in this chapter. As a result of the advantages provided by the institutional repository, Redeemer’s University is in a strong position to meet its mission goals and objectives.

During the course of planning an institutional repository, digital library collections or digital preservation service it is inevitable to draft file format policies in order to ensure long term digital preservation, its accessibility and compatibility. Sincere efforts have been made to encourage the adoption of standard formats yet the digital preservation policies vary from library to library. The present paper is based against this background to present the digital preservation community with a common understanding of the common file formats used in the digital libraries or institutional repositories. The paper discusses both open and proprietary file formats for several media.

The chapter focused on the institutional repository as a knowledge management tool that enhances the visibility of libraries in the 21st century. The researcher mainly relied on content analysis to gather research data. The researcher took a swipe on the uptake of institutional repositories the world over and an analysis of how an institutional repository could be used as a knowledge management tool was done. The researcher also conducted a situational analysis of the MSU institutional repository and assessed the impact of the digital repository on the visibility of the library. The author used the Webometrics Ranking of Universities in Zimbabwe to assess how universities are ranked in Zimbabwe.

Purpose – The aim of this paper was to identify various institutional repository (IR) initiatives taken by Bangladeshi institutions, including identifying prospects, exploring strategies, and framing guideline for building IRs in Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a general review and counts the development of IR practices in Bangladesh. Other secondary sources, such as research reports, articles and internet, are used. Discussions were also held with staff members of some other libraries, who intended to establish IR in their respective institutions. Data were collected from different institutions, currently practicing IRs in Bangladesh, through personal visit and website. Findings – The study explored the existing status of practicing IRs in Bangladesh and identified the trends at national and global level of IRs. Results showed that some institutions established their repositories in Bangladesh using DSpace, others used Greenstone and EPrints. Originality/value – This paper provides basic information for beginners and helps in planning to build IR in their respective organizations in Bangladesh.
