Modernization is an effective approach to making existing mainframe and distributed systems more responsive to business needs. SOA is an adequate paradigm that allows companies to tap into the business value in their current systems for rapid future changes to the business model. In their research works, the authors focus on the use of SOA to implement Inter-Organizational WorkFlows (IOWF). The goal is to take benefits from SOA advantages like interoperability, reusability, and flexibility to deal with process models flexibly enough. This chapter focuses on specific IOWF architectures: the “chained execution” and the “subcontracting.” First, the authors define Service-Based Cooperation Patterns (SBCP) suitable to these IOWF architectures; a SBCP is defined through three main dimensions: the distribution of services, the control of execution, and the structure of interaction. The second issue of the chapter consists of adaptation and evolution of IOWF process models obeying to the defined SBCP. Conformably to the three dimensions of SBCP, the authors define three classes of adaptation patterns: “service,” “control flow,” and “interaction.” Also, the authors particularly distinguish operations of evolution of process models based on two perspectives: the expansion of the global functionality of the process and the expansion of the cooperation. For implementation, the authors consider BPEL processes.

The key objectives of this paper is to propose a design implementation of blockchain based on smart contract which have potential to change international mobile roaming business model by eliminating third-party data clearing house (DCH). The analysis method used comparative analysis between current situation and target architecture of international mobile roaming business that commonly used by TOGAF Architecture Development Method. The purposed design of implementation has validated the business value by using Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) calculation. This paper applies the TOGAF approach in order to address architecture gap to evaluate by the enhancement capability that required from these three fundamental aspect which are Business, Technology and Information. With the blockchain smart contract solution able to eliminate the intermediaries Data Clearing House system, which impacted to the business model of international mobile roaming with no more intermediaries fee for call data record (CDR) processing and open up for online billing and settlement among parties. In conclusion the business value of blockchain implementation in the international mobile roaming has been measured using TCO comparison between current situation and target architecture that impacted cost reduction of operational platform is 19%. With this information and understanding the blockchain technology has significant benefit in the international mobile roaming business.

Originating from a pragmatic need to document strategies for modelling recurrent business scenarios, collections of workflow patterns have been proposed in the business process management community. The concrete applications of these workflow patterns in forward engineering have been extensively explored. Conversely, the core concern of business process archaeology is on recovering business process models from legacy systems utilizing reverse engineering methods. Little attention is given to the relationship between business process recovery and workflow patterns. This chapter aims to give a compact introduction to workflow control-flow patterns, workflow data patterns, workflow exception patterns, and service interaction patterns. In particular, the feasibility of combining workflow patterns with business process archaeology is examined by drawing on the research results of the MARBLE framework.

Purpose – Context-awareness has emerged as an important principle in the design of flexible business processes. The goal of the research is to develop an approach to extend context-aware business process modeling toward location-awareness. The purpose of this paper is to identify and conceptualize location-dependencies in process modeling. Design/methodology/approach – This paper uses a pattern-based approach to identify location-dependency in process models. The authors design specifications for these patterns. The authors present illustrative examples and evaluate the identified patterns through a literature review of published process cases. Findings – This paper introduces location-awareness as a new perspective to extend context-awareness in BPM research, by introducing relevant location concepts such as location-awareness and location-dependencies. The authors identify five basic location-dependent control-flow patterns that can be captured in process models. And the authors identify location-dependencies in several existing case studies of business processes. Research limitations/implications – The authors focus exclusively on the control-flow perspective of process models. Further work needs to extend the research to address location-dependencies in process data or resources. Further empirical work is needed to explore determinants and consequences of the modeling of location-dependencies. Originality/value – As existing literature mostly focusses on the broad context of business process, location in process modeling still is treated as “second class citizen” in theory and in practice. This paper discusses the vital role of location-dependencies within business processes. The proposed five basic location-dependent control-flow patterns are novel and useful to explain location-dependency in business process models. They provide a conceptual basis for further exploration of location-awareness in the management of business processes.

Purpose Digitalisation has been identified as a driving force behind retail sector transformation. The purpose of this paper is to provide a deeper understanding of how omni-channel strategies link to the digitalisation phenomenon. The study is explorative in nature and aims to expand existing knowledge by using a business model (BM) perspective. Design/methodology/approach The study uses a qualitative approach. Data collection involved a questionnaire answered by 13 firms from three retail segments (i.e. fashion, consumer electronics and bookstores and media) and a group discussion with senior managers. The data were complemented with information from websites, applications and available online reports. Findings The findings present empirical insights about different strategic and BM approaches to omni-channel retailing and highlight examples of pioneering retailers from the Italian market. The proposed framework consolidates earlier studies and puts forward three dimensions for a successful transition to omni-channel retailing BMs: a seamless customer experience, an integrated analytics system and an effective supply chain and logistics. Practical implications Managers can employ an overview of mobile commerce usage to manage the process of integrating channels, within their BMs, alongside the customer journey. Particular attention should be paid to development and the use of data analytics tools as one of the dimensions with a significant impact on omni-channel management. Originality/value First, this paper applies a BM perspective as a novel approach for analysing a transition to omni-channel retailing. Second, it is based on empirical analysis of three retail segments, which provide new insights into omni-channel strategies in the retailing literature.

The study of microstructural evolution in polycrystalline materials has been active for many decades so it is interesting to illustrate the progress that has been made and to point out some remaining challenges. Grain boundaries are important because their long-range motion controls evolution in many cases. We have some understanding of the essential features of grain boundary properties over the five macroscopic degrees of freedom. Excess free energy, for example, is dominated by the two surfaces that comprise the boundary although the twist component also has a non-negligible influence. Mobility is less well defined although there are some clear trends for certain classes of materials such as fcc metals. Computer simulation has made a critical contribution by showing, for example, that mobility exhibits an intrinsic crystallographic anisotropy even in the absence of impurities. At the mesoscopic level, we now have rigorous relationships between geometry and growth rates for individual grains in three dimensions. We are in the process of validating computer models of grain growth against 3D non-destructive measurements. Quantitative modeling of recrystallization that includes texture development has been accomplished in several groups. Other properties such as corrosion resistance are being related quantitatively to microstructure. There remain, however, numerous challenges. Despite decades of study, we still do not have complete cause-and-effect descriptions of most cases of abnormal grain growth. The response of nanostructured materials to annealing can lead to either unexpected resistance to coarsening, or, coarsening at unexpectedly low temperatures. General process models for recrystallization that can be applied to industrial alloys remain elusive although significant progress has been made for the specific case of aluminum alloy processing. Thin films often exhibit stagnation of grain growth that we do not fully understand, as well as abnormal grain growth. Grain boundaries respond to driving forces in more complicated ways than we understood. Clearly many exciting challenges remain in grain growth and recrystallization.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that expands business model innovation literature by including a social goal, the emerging markets (EMs) environmental characteristics and adopting a bottom-up perspective. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on a single-case study. Sistema Ser/CEGIN (SER–CEGIN) is an Argentine social business that offers high-quality medical healthcare to BOP users. Findings – The paper presents a new conceptualization on business model innovation that includes three dimensions: firm-centric, environment and customer-centric. The framework incorporates to the traditional framework on business model innovation, the social profit equation, the general and task environment and the end-user, as well as the dynamics between them. Research limitations/implications – While the authors acknowledge the importance of studying the components of the business model operating levels (economic, operational and strategic) to determine the type of business model innovation (revenue, enterprise and industrial), the framework incoporates the environment and customer-centric dimension. The suggested framework opens new streams of research both for the innovation business model literature as well as for the EMs – bottom of the pyramid (BOP) literature. Practical implications – To achieve economic and social goals, particularly in the BOP, firms need to adopt a bottom-up approach to understand the components of their business model that need to be modified. Originality/value – The paper proposes a novel business model innovation conceptualization which is useful for both researches to better study business models in the BOP and for firms to successfully operate in the BOP.
