Factors Affecting the Adoption of Web 2.0 Technologies by University Students

The purpose of this chapter is: (1) to examine Australian university students' awareness of the benefits of Web 2.0 technologies, and (2) to investigate the factors that influence students to adopt Web 2.0 technologies to supplement in-class learning, using the theoretical foundations of both Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) and Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour (DTPB). Web survey data of 60 students studying in 14 universities and 1 undergraduate college across Australia were used to examine the aforementioned purposes. Findings indicate that most students in this study's sample were aware of the benefits of Web 2.0 technologies to supplement in-class instructions. The findings also indicate that students' attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control were strong determinants of their intention to use Web 2.0 technologies.

Web 2.0 technologies refer to useful and modern tools to motivate students for actively engaging in learning activities. However, there are difficulties to Web 2.0 technologies adoption among university students. Understanding users' motivation could enhance the adoption of Web 2.0 technologies. The aim of this chapter was to use the multivariate methods to quantitative describe the student's user experience (UX) regarding the acceptance of Web 2.0 technologies in higher education. An excellent validity of the structural model for testing the intention to use Web 2.0 technologies by university students was revealed. The data indicate that the intrinsic motivation was composed by users' expectations and educational aspirations. Moreover, the findings revealed that the extrinsic motivation can influence the intention to use Web 2.0 educational tools. This study completed the current knowledge on behavioral intention to use digital tools across university students and released new opportunities for UX investigations.

While many studies have attempted to understand knowledge-sharing practices in the health-care industry, there is a dearth of knowledge about the determinants of the knowledge-sharing behaviour of pharmacists. The present study employed theory of planned behaviour constructs and personality traits to assess factors affecting the knowledge-sharing behaviour of pharmacists in Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, with the use of a structured questionnaire as the data collection instrument. Relevant descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were carried out on the collected data. The findings revealed that there is a positive relationship between attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, openness to experience, agreeableness and knowledge-sharing behaviour. This implies that pharmacists whose personality traits tend towards openness to experience and agreeableness will share their knowledge more readily than those whose personality traits do not. Also, pharmacists’ knowledge-sharing behaviour can be enhanced through improvements in their attitude towards knowledge sharing, subjective norms and their perceived behavioural control.

Purpose – This study sought to investigate the factors that influence students’ intention to use the Internet for academic purposes in Universiti Utara Malaysia. This study applies theory of planned behaviour (TPB) as the base model. The model employed the original variables from the theory i.e. attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and intention.   Method – A survey involving of questionnaires was conducted among 369 public university students. Multiple regression was employed to examine the factors influencing intention to use the Internet for academic purposes.   Findings – Results revealed that the variables attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control are statistically significant in influencing intention to use the Internet for learning purposes. It was also found that 38% of the variance in students’ intention to use the Internet is cumulatively explained by their attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioural control.   Significance – The paper provides useful scientific insight into the relationships between attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control variables towards intention to use the Internet for academic purposes. The findings can be used to promote the use of Internet among students in enhancing their learning experience.

This study aimed to identify the causal relationships amongst attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, moral obligation and intention towards cheating by the Theory of Planned Behaviour. The study sample (n = 1,220) consists of senior students at the faculties of Van Yuzuncu Yil University, Turkey. The data were collected with the scales; attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, moral obligation and intention towards cheating, which were developed by researchers of the study. The data were analysed by the exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis. It can be concluded that the Theory of Planned Behaviour is capable of explaining the attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, moral obligation and intention variables towards cheating, and it is confirmed in a good model fit with this study. According to the path analysis results, the attitude towards cheating has a strong and significant effect for cheating intention, and subjective norms and the perceived behavioural control towards cheating have no significant effect for cheating intention.   Keywords: University students, cheating, planned behaviour, path analysis.

This paper aims to investigate the use of cash cards in points of sale (POS), applying the theory of planned behavior. A field survey was conducted in Tehran, Iran. Data was collected and analyzed from 163 customers who have referred to chain stories in the area of Tehran. Findings indicate that the theory of planned behaviour is a suitable instrument to predict using cash cards by customers. In addition, multiple regression analysis revealed that attitude towards cash cards, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control have a positive and significant impact on intention to use cash cards by customers. Managers should consider various facets of customer decision-making process and try to enhance quality of provided payment services to satisfy customers. E-shopping is a rapidly growing phenomenon among different individuals who intend to shop online. However, a trust deficit in the E-shopping environment has always been a critical issue in the brick-and-click mode of shopping, being one of the main reasons for E-cart abandonment in E-commerce. This empirical study is aimed at investigating the perceived effect of website trust on E-shopping intentions and behaviour, drawing upon the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires from working adults who shop for garments online. Structural equation modelling was used to evaluate the model fit and assumptions. Our findings suggest that website trust and E-shopping attitude play substantial roles in building E-shopping intentions and actual behaviours. Both are the significant predictors of the behaviour mediated by E-shopping intentions. However, E-shopping intentions did not mediate between subjective norms and E-shopping behaviour, when working adults decide to purchase garments online.

The study reported on in this article investigated the use of Web 2.0 technologies by lecturers in the Faculty of Information Science and Communications at Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Mzuzu, Malawi. By distributing a questionnaire to 19 lecturers, conducting follow-up interviews with seven lecturers and analysing the curricula, the study showed that between 10 (58.8%) and 13 (76.5%) lecturers use Wikipedia, YouTube, blogs, Google Apps and Twitter to accomplish various academic activities, such as handing out assignments to students; receiving feedback from students; uploading lecture notes; searching for content; storing lecture notes; and carrying out collaborative educational activities. The study adopted the Decomposed Theory of Planned Behaviour (Taylor and Todd 1995) and the theory’s elements that strongly affected lecturers’ use of the technologies according to the results included attitude and perceived behaviour control. The study also found that poor Internet access remains the key stumbling block towards a successful adoption of Web 2.0 technologies by lecturers at MZUNI. To this end, the study recommends that the newly established Department of ICT Directorate with support from MZUNI management should install campuswide Wi-Fi and improve Internet bandwidth so that lecturers’ access to the Internet is not limited to their offices but rather is available in the teaching rooms across the campus.

This study aims to understand why the usage of mobile entertainment services (MES) among young Bangladeshis is negligible. The authors propose a modification of combined technology acceptance model (TAM) and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) model with additional factors. Questionnaire surveys were conducted in Bangladesh among young adult mobile users. The authors analysed the data of 251 valid responses via four TAM–TPB models. The study model, based on a modified TAM–TPB framework, fits generally well for mobile entertainment services in Bangladesh. The three factors of perceived behaviour control, perceived value, and attitude are important determinants for intention to use mobile entertainment services, and perceived behavioural control has the strongest direct effect on attitude and indirect effect on behavioural intention. The results suggest that mobile companies need to strengthen their organizational and technical support systems and improve service quality and affordability to encourage young consumers to use MES.
