How Students Choose the University

The aim of this chapter is to provide a literature overview about factors that affect students' choice of university. All factors can be divided in two types – individual or personal characteristics of students and institutional factors. Individual characteristics include students' age, gender, ethnicity, family background, ability, interests and motivation. Institutional factors describe university ranking, reputation, potential outcomes and benefits for students, as well as geographical location and costs for student (tuition fee, financial aid and scholarship). The combination of students' individual characteristics determines university choice. However, the quality of teaching, reputation and ranking of university are the most influential characteristic of university.

The website of a university is considered to be a virtual gateway to provide primary resources to its stakeholders. It can play an indispensable role in disseminating information about a university to a variety of audience at a time. Thus, the quality of an academic website requires special attention to fulfil the users’ need. This paper presents a multi-method approach of quality assessment of the academic websites, in the context of universities of Bangladesh. We developed an automated web-based tool that can evaluate any academic website based on three criteria, which are as follows: content of information, loading time and overall performance. Content of information contains many sub criteria, such as university vision and mission, faculty information, notice board and so on. This tool can also perform comparative analysis among several academic websites and generate a ranked list of these. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first initiative to develop an automated tool for accessing academic website quality in context of Bangladesh. Beside this, we have conducted a questionnaire-based statistical evaluation among several universities to obtain the respective users’ feedback about their academic websites. Then, a ranked list is generated based on the survey result that is almost similar to the ranked list got from the University ranking systems. This validates the effectiveness of our developed tool in accessing academic website.

The article presents the results of a study aimed at solving the problem of improving the quality of a language test. It was found that taking into account test takers’ individual characteristics that may affect their test performance, namely their personal characteristics, general and specific knowledge, language ability level and the emotional component at the design stage allows to increase reliability, interactiveness, impact, authenticity and even practicality of the test, which, in turn, contribute in its overall effectiveness.

Differentiated learning technology has been used for a long time. However, with the introduction of innovative educational technologies, it acquires new features and therefore requires additional research. Higher schools are in the process of searching for elements based on a personality-focused approach and introduce the most effective technologies in this process. The purpose of the article is to discusses the implementation of technologies that provide a single differentiation in the process of preparing students. The characteristic of students' work in differentiated educational conditions is presented. Teaching and training students is arranged in groups. As a result, there is a way to prepare competent students, making them highly qualified professionals. The study shows that there are great opportunities in teaching students of a higher educational institution. The formation of competencies with the help of differentiated learning technology becomes more effective, since individual characteristics of each student are taken into account and their interest and motivation to study a particular course increases. Differentiated tasks allow you to monitor dynamics of the development of students' competence, the systematic implementation of a certain type of tasks that are suitable for certain groups of students.The article presents a study of the level of training of students of the University of the 3rd year of study. The study was conducted in 2018 throughout the school year. Our results are based on data obtained from two groups of students with the same number of subjects. The introduction of differentiated learning technology can improve the quality of training of higher education institutions students. With the help of these technologies, each student, building training in accordance with their personal characteristics and professional needs, achieves success in mastering the material, quickly forms professional competence. The results of the study focused on the quality of training showed that differentiated technologies improve students’ performance.

With the rapid change of the industrial environment and social development, vocational training must be constantly updated in accordance with these changes, and combine and expand the use of civilian training resources to increase vocational training pipelines and enhance competitiveness. Thus, vocational training organizations play an important role in the function of future labor force development and the sustainability of education. The purpose of this study is to explore the influences of training organizations’ service quality and trainees’ individual characteristics on the effectiveness of the vocational training. The study employed Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model to measure the unemployed effectiveness of the vocational training and the SERVQUAL to quantity the service quality of the vocational training organization. A questionnaire survey was conducted at a vocational training organization for beauty and hairdressing in Taiwan. This study distributed 479 questionnaires and obtained 216 valid samples. The data was analyzed by using the reliability analysis, descriptive analysis, analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression analysis. The results revealed that training organizations’ service quality and trainees’ personal characteristics significantly positively affect training effectiveness for trainees. This paper serves as a reference for training organizations and policy makers to improve and monitor the service quality of vocational training organizations, elevate training effectiveness, and achieve the sustainability of vocational educations.

Nowadays, more and more organizations are realizing of importance of their data, because it can be considered as an important asset in present nearly all business organizational processes. Information Technology Division (ITD) is a department in the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) that consolidates efforts in providing IT services to the university. The university data management started with decentralized units, where each center or division has its own hardware and database system. Later it improved to become became centralized, and ITD is now trying to one policy across the whole university. This will optimize the high performance of data management in the university. A visit has been done to ITD building and a presentation has been conducted discussing many issues concerning data management quality maturity in IT division at IIUM. We got some notices like server’s room location, power supply and backup and existence of data redundant. These issues are discussed in details in the next sections of this paper and some recommendations are suggested to improve data quality in the university. The quality of the data is very important in decision making, especially for a university that is trying to improve its strategy towards a research university and rise its rank among the World University Ranking.

This chapter is designed to provide insights as to how different elements of university characteristics, campus visit, information sources, and students' personal characteristics influence their university behaviors directly and indirectly through their effects on university-related attitudes. Proposed relationships are tested with data collected from 421 respondents through structured questionnaires. This study enriches the university choice literature by investigating the effects of various university choice factors on both attitudinal and behavioral responses. As expected, it is found that while controlling other factors there is a positive relationship between students' attitudes toward university and preference for a university. Results provide evidence that some factors have a significant effect only on students' attitudinal responses, while some have a significant effect on behavioral responses. Unexpectedly, campus visit does not act as a moderator in the relationship between university perceptions and attitude toward university.

This study explores consumer demands in the Egyptian market of university education. Three aspects discussed are the value of university education in Egyptian culture, consumer perceptions regarding the quality of university education, and consumer preferences regarding the university education service. Results of the empirical investigation indicate that university education is highly regarded in Egyptian culture, however, consumer’s perception of its quality is moderate. Consumers prefer university studies in courses taught in the English language, universities in a nearby geographical location, governmental universities, and top class faculties. The study focuses on university education in Egypt and the authors hope to shed light on higher education in countries that share the same cultural characteristics. Many studies investigated higher education in different cultures, yet relatively few have considered it in an emerging nation. The present study addresses this gap.

The example provided in this opinion article shows that it is now possible for a single academic to drastically increase the ranking of its university by abusing one of the weaknesses of a given ranking system. Due to the importance of these rankings nowadays in the media or public opinion, it is time to design a resilient and reliable ranking which can annihilate future potential manipulations and pressures from university administrations or governments. Indeed, we can easily imagine a university pushing professors to self-cite their work to increase the global ranking, and thus affecting universities and academics trying to do their job honestly. Other parameters may be as well easy to abuse to boost significantly a ranking artificially (for example: parameters involving ratios of staff and/or students). Such manipulations would be very detrimental to the quality of research and teaching worldwide in the future.It is time for the university ranking organisations to have a serious self-critic on their weaknesses and to think together with the academics about a ranking system which could be robust enough to annihilate such manipulations. Ideally, the ranking should push universities to increase the quality of their research and teaching, instead of encouraging academic misconduct. The credibility and the reputation of the academic world are now on the line.

Purpose – This paper aims at identifying factors that might affect academic patent activities. It investigates the characteristics of universities acting on the number of academic patents, thus classifying elements of differentiation among universities able to determine the level of patent activity. Design/methodology/approach – Three hypotheses are tested through a regression analysis, considering various academic variables. Findings – Results demonstrate that the patent activity is mainly influenced by the presence of universities’ internal policies that regulate such a field. The adoption of a regulation is a signal for academics of the university inclination and attempt to develop an environment conducive to patent activities, and to offer structured support to inventors in the different phases of the patenting process. Research limitations – The study, as it focuses on a single country, Italy, may reflect some peculiarities of the national system. Future research may extend it to different geographical areas in which institutional and environmental factors are different, or, maintaining the geographical location, study the impact of institutional factors to the change over time in the rate of patenting universities. Originality/value – Unlike the great number of studies which focus on institutional factors affecting university patent activity, the present study explores the academic elements able to valorize and exploit scientific knowledge, providing also a practical guidance for university governance.
