Information retrieval is currently an active research field with the evolution of World wide web. The objective of this chapter is to provide an insight into the information retrieval definitions, process, models. Further how traditional information retrieval has evolved and adapted for search engines is also discussed. The information retrieval models have not only been used for search purpose it also supports cross lingual translation and retrieval tasks. This chapter also outlines the CLIR process in a brief manner. The tools which are usually used for experimental and research purpose is also discussed. This chapter is organized as Introduction to the concepts of information retrieval. Description of the information retrieval process, the information retrieval models, the role of external sources like ontologies in information retrieval systems. Finally the chapter provides an overview of CLIR and the tools used in developing IR systems is mentioned. Further the latest research directions in IR is explained.

The role of terms-indirect nominations in the thesaurus of information retrieval system of the Slavic linguisticsThe article examines some of the problems of modern information retrieval systems in the Slavic studies, in particular, one of the most representative – Bibliographic Database World Slavonic Linguistics, created in the Institute of Slavic Studies of PAS under the leadership of Dr. Z. E. Rudnik-Karwatova. The author focuses on the ways to improve the linguistic support of such systems and increase the efficiency of image for information searching. They are connected with the study of the keywords in the annotations of scientific publications within database, as well as in the whole of modern Slavic linguistic terminology. This study enables us not only to select a comprehensive number of terms for each linguistic discipline, school, or problem, but also to determine their variability as well as their relationship with other terms of modern-­day Slavic linguistics. The result of such study should be information retrieval thesaurus of modern Slavic linguistic terminology.Special attention in the article is paid to the role of indirect nomination in modern Slavic linguistic terminology, system-organizing function of the terms with indirect semantics, resources and modes of their creating in different Slavonic languages, the correlation between indirect nomination and figurative one as well as the terms which indicate the place of object in some classifications (see Ukrainian середній рід) or gradual opposition (see Polish semileksem).

This paper reviews the concept and goal of Information Retrieval Systems (IRSs). It also explains the synonymous concepts in Information Retrieval (IR)which include such terms as: imprecision, vagueness, uncertainty, and inconsistency. Current trends in IRSs are discussed. Fuzzy Set Theory, Fuzzy Retrieval Modelsare reviewed. The paper also discusses extensions of Fuzzy Boolean Retrieval Models including Fuzzy techniques for documents’ indexingandFlexible query languages. Fuzzy associative mechanisms were identified to include:(1)fuzzy pseudothesauri and fuzzy ontologies which can be used to contextualize the search by expanding the set of index terms of documents;(2)an alternative use of fuzzy pseudothesarui and fuzzy ontologies is to expand the query with related terms by taking into account their varying importance of an additional termand (3)fuzzy clustering techniques, where each document can be placed within several clusters with a given strength of belonging to each cluster, can be used to expand the set of the documents retrieved in response to a query.The paper concludesby recommending that in an electronic library environment, the librarians and information scientists should acquaint themselves with these terms in order to be more equipped in helping library users retrieve online documents relevant to their information needs.

Information retrieval is applied widely to models and algorithms in wireless networks for cyber-physical systems. Query terms proximity has proved that it is a very useful information to improve the performance of information retrieval systems. Query terms proximity cannot retrieve documents independently, and it must be incorporated into original information retrieval models. This article proposes the concept of query term proximity embedding, which is a new method to incorporate query term proximity into original information retrieval models. Moreover, term-field-convolutions frequency framework, which is an implementation of query term proximity embedding, is proposed in this article, and experimental results show that this framework can improve the performance effectively compared with traditional proximity retrieval models.

Many organizations and businesses are using futurology to keep pace with the ever-increasing changes in the world, as the businesses and organizations need to be updated to achieve organizational and business growth and development. A review of the previous studies has shown that no systematic research has been already conducted on the future of information retrieval systems and the role of library and information science experts in the future of such systems. Therefore, a qualitative study was conducted by reviewing resources, consulting experts, doing interaction analysis, and writing scenarios. The results demonstrated 13 key factors affecting the future of information retrieval systems in the form of two driving forces of social determinism and technological determinism, and four scenarios of Canopus star, Ursa major, Ursa minor, and single star. The results also showed the dominance of technology and social demand and its very important role in the future of information retrieval systems.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the role of emotional aspects in information retrieval of PhD students from the web. Design/methodology/approach From the methodological perspective, the present study is experimental and the type of study is practical. The study population is PhD students of various fields of science. The study sample consists of 50 students as selected by the stratified purposive sampling method. The information aggregation is performed by observing the records of user’s facial expressions, log file by Morae software, as well as pre-search and post-search questionnaire. The data analysis is performed by canonical correlation analysis. Findings The findings showed that there was a significant relationship between emotional expressions and searchers’ individual characteristics. Searchers satisfaction of results, frequency internet search, experience of search, interest in the search task and familiarity with similar searches were correlated with the increased happy emotion. The examination of user’s emotions during searching performance showed that users with happiness emotion dedicated much time in searching and viewing of search solutions. More internet addresses with more queries were used by happy participants; on the other hand, users with anger and disgust emotions had the lowest attempt in search performance to complete search process. Practical implications The results imply that the information retrieval systems in the web should identify emotional expressions in a set of perceiving signs in human interaction with computer, similarity, face emotional states, searching and information retrieval from the web. Originality/value The results explicit in the automatic identification of users’ emotional expressions can enter new dimensions into their moderator and information retrieval systems on the web and can pave the way of design of emotional information retrieval systems for the successful retrieval of users of the network.
