Since antiquity technological innovations endanger environmental balance and there is major need to keep this balance in check. Any new technology generates more business activity, leading to increased resource extraction and waste and directly affecting natural ecosystems. Thus technological progress and economic growth are based on unsustainable practices. In the last few decades, information and communication technologies (ICT) accelerated globalized business activity by making the world smaller, more connected and smarter. ICT gradually transformed all aspects of human life including work, learning, and leisure; it has a global impact on business processes and practices, communication, logistics and transportation, finance, and commerce among other aspects. This resulted in wealth accumulation, resource depletion and social divide which have led to problems, directly and indirectly, such as scarcity of natural resources, global warming, climate change, population growth, and increasing youth unemployment. This chapter outlines some of the challenges of the new technologies and ICT practices. It proposes a practice-oriented framework for adoption of more sustainable ICT strategy in companies.

Since antiquity, human activity and technological innovations endanger environmental balance. Any new technology generates more business activity, leading to increased resource extraction and waste and directly menacing natural ecosystems. As a result, technological progress and economic growth are based on unsustainable practices. In the last few decades, ICT has accelerated and globalized business activity and many problems emerged as scarcity of natural resources, global warming, and population growth are only few of them. For less than 20 years, information technologies made the world smaller and smarter. ICT transformed all aspects of human life including business processes and practices, communication, logistics and transportation, learning, entertainment, commerce, and many others. The present research aims to outline some of the challenges to new technologies and IT/IS practices. It proposes a practice-oriented framework for adoption of green IT/IS strategy in companies. While literature is dominated by specific technological issues, businesses still miss the general vision of sustainable/green/clean technologies and how to adopt green IT/IS. Therefore, the discussion section of this chapter proposes an analysis of wider practices and initiatives leading to green IT/IS.

The way of life has changed with the introduction of information and communication technologies (ICT) in every one’s day to day activities and the business. As ICT technologies are constantly evolving, many people attribute the success of enterprises to the ways they deploy and take advantage of new technologies, not only to make their operations more efficient but most importantly to refine and adopt new effective and adaptive business models. Since the advent of the Internet and the very first Internet service providers (ISP) in operation, the traditional ISP market has been in constant evolution due to the gradual globalisation and commoditisation of ISP services. Deregulation and ICT policies have fostered competition (e.g., unbundling of the local loop and so forth) as well. The Internet is as an important channel of interaction inside and/or outside enterprises. The essence of the Internet is conducting business and running of business processes over data communication networks based on nonproprietary standards (Porter, 2001). The World Wide Web as a portal represents a major electronic business (e-business) platform accessed through communication channels provisioned by network and service providers (such as ISDN, DSL, WLAN, UMTS, etc.). There are many challenging aspects of the e-Business that must be considered for a sustainable business of an ISP (Petrie et al., 2004).

This case is designed to explore the impact of information technology on business processes. The case starts with a description of a customer’s new technology experience at a McDonald’s restaurant. McDonald’s introduced multiple technologies in recent years as part of its strategic growth plan. The fast-food company is improving its business processes, mainly the order process, with new technologies to provide customer convenience. Such changes are critical to staying successful in the highly competitive fast-food industry. Self-order kiosks, the mobile order and pay app, and the Uber Eats app are three major technologies which have changed the order processes at McDonald’s. Students explore how these technologies change the order process and describe the impact of these technology initiatives at McDonald’s.

Computer literacy affects all areas of human life, and our subsequent control is almost inevitable nowadays. Due to the rapid growth of scientific knowledge and development of information and communication technologies, significant changes are taking place in individual countries. New technologies are coming to the fore through which there is an increase in country's economy, employment as well as labor productivity. To some extent, this fact is influenced by the ability of basic computer skills. This aspect is also important in terms of regional development at the national, regional and local level. The aim of the paper is to characterize selected indicator of computer literacy - internet work at three levels of Slovakia (state, district and municipality). The paper will be based by data from the Statistical Office of the European Union and Statistical Office of the Slovak republic. The methods of analysis, synthesis as well as graphical and cartographic methods will be the main methods used in the paper. Based on the achieved results, it can be stated that Slovakia achieved an average of 51.4 % in the development of internet use. It is very just above the EU average. At the regional level, the highest rate of internet use is manifested in the western part of Slovakia. At the local level in the case of the Nitra district, the internet was mostly used in the hinterland of the city of Nitra.

Soil is the major natural resource on which human life depends for the production of food, feed, fiber, renewable energy and raw materials, as well as the protection of the planet’s natural ecosystems and climate system. Increasing soil degradation and subsequent ecosystem degradation is a current concern in agriculture and the environment. Soil degradation poses many challenges to feed the world’s growing population. This food insecurity will also reduce the income of the agricultural sector, which will lead to a decrease in economic income. Soil degradation will lead to environmental threats, the extinction of animals and plants, the reduction of biodiversity, water loss, and disruption of water and carbon cycles. The use of new technologies such as biological crusts has provided great hope for the recovery and restoration of degraded ecosystems. Inoculation of biological crusts, especially cyanobacteria, has had positive results on improving soil conditions and restoration degraded soils. In this article, has been introduced the biocrusts communities considering cyanobacteria species to restore degraded soils. We reported the results of cyanobacteria applications in soil conservation in arid environments of Iran.

Information and communication technologies implementation in most areas of human life is aimed at improving the efficiency of business processes, but the emergence of new vulnerabilities and cyberthreats generates cybersecurity incidents. To localize and neutralize incidents effective management techniques are necessary. These processes are very actual for critical information infrastructure of the state, because destructive influences on objects of critical information infrastructure can cause big losses for the state (human life, material and status losses). Known methods for incidents management are not oriented on some special components and parameters of the cyberspace. It complicates implementation of these methods in real information and communication systems. From this viewpoint, in this paper the concept of network-centric incident management was developed. It allows to identify the most important (real) objects of critical information infrastructure protection and cybersecurity incidents to predict the categories that arise as a result of specific cyberattacks and their risk level. Further research study consists in instrumental tools based on mentioned concept. These tools can be useful for incidents prediction (character and level of losses) in information and communication systems of state critical infrastructure objects.

Information and communication technologies have established themselves in all areas of human life. We use these technologies for work but also for entertainment. Computers facilitates numerous activities. New technologies also bring new problems. Therefore, educational institutions must respond to this situation. Children use computer devices very often, also to the detriment of their movement. Children also use a lot of mobile devices. There is a tendency to use mobile devices in the classroom and find new teaching methods. According to international research has current way of life negatively affects health, especially children. Children too much time sitting at the computer, stare into its smartphones, watching television for a long time. They move little and they carry little activity outside. The paper describes case study among children. We used questionnaire method and long-term observation. The first questionnaire was completed by 138 students aged 11 to 19 years. Obtained data are processed by statistical methods. For analysis of the results in each item was measured as having detected data variability. We used a coefficient of variation. To interpret the results of the second stage classification was done chi-square test. We've also used a case study. We are within one year we observed 15 boys aged 10 to 17 years. We have focused on observing their physical condition, any manually abilities, use of leisure time. This paper aims to show the possibilities of using information and communication technologies in promoting the healthy development of children.
