E-Learning in the Hashemite University

The development of information and communication technology (ICT) and e-learning has enhanced the process of teaching and learning in Jordanian higher education institutions particularly in the Hashemite University (HU). HU is considered one of the leading universities in adopting e-learning. The attitude toward ICT and e-learning is measured to understand how ICT and e-learning would be accepted through applying the diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory. The results showed a significant relationship between students' perception of technology characteristics and their attitude towards using the technology in the educational system. In this chapter, factors influencing user acceptance and adoption of ICT in Jordan on student motivations for the acceptance of technologies necessary for the delivery of e-learning activities are being handled.

This chapter analyzes approaches to faculty development for e-learning in post-compulsory institutions. Everett Rogers’ (2003) diffusion of innovation theory provides the framework for a review of faculty development strategies adopted by institutions to foster the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by mainstream faculty into everyday teaching and learning practices. Using examples as illustration, the chapter reviews different approaches to faculty development aimed at achieving a critical mass of staff who are competent working in the e-learning context. These strategies include focusing on the characteristics of innovation; adopting a staged approach to skills acquisition; embedding skills and processes associated with teaching and learning in the e-learning context in formal, accredited courses; fostering peer learning; framing faculty development as project-based learning; and using the online environment to deliver faculty development. The chapter concludes with practical advice concerning faculty development for e-learning practice across institutions.

Information and communication technologies allow the transmission of audio and video signals in real time, making meetings and interactions with people in remote locations a possibility. For institutions offering education in multiple geographic locations there is a real opportunity to interact with students in a virtual teaching space that supplies text, audio and visual cues. However, technological capability can outstrip availability and adoption. This chapter considers the psychological factors influencing usability and user acceptance of educational technology and associated implications for learning and evaluation. Preference for and effort devoted to educational media may be a function of personality. Preference for online or text-based education may be a function of introversion, and time spent away from study may indicate extraversion or procrastination. Using student surveys, willingness to engage in videoconferencing or to use mobile phones to support teaching and learning was explored. Within an ergonomic framework the authors detail human factors relevant to the use of videoconferencing and mobile phones to support lectures to remote locations.

Higher Education is the climax of the process of providing knowledge, changing learners attitude and inculcating specialized skills in individuals preparatory to taking a life-long employment with intent to earning a living and equally contributing to national economic growth and development. The Teaching and learning process is cardinal to the realization of the educational objectives of any nation. The advent of information and communication technology has made teaching and learning easier and beyond the traditional face to face interaction between the teacher and the learner. E-learning basically involving the transfer of skills and knowledge through an electronic device aims at improving the teaching/learning process. In spite of the benefits of e-learning to both regular students and distance learners, e-learning has been fraught with some challenges in Africa. Therefore, this paper discusses some of the challenges facing e-learning in Africa particularly in the Nigerian higher education system. These among others are epileptic power supply, high cost of procurement of computer hardware, inadequate infrastructure, and resistance to change on the part of the instructors, inability of learners to make use of ICT infrastructure, inadequate skilled manpower ICT, and corruption of computer storage device through viruses. Effectively managing the identified challenges means that the government would have to ensure regular power supply, lecturers and learners should be trained in the use of ICT infrastructure, and the government should evolve viable ICT policy as well as control or subsidise the price of the s of ICT infrastructure to make it affordable for both lecturers and learners. Advances in science and technology, especially Information and Communication Technology (ICT), has great impacts on the present education management.It allows the development of the e-learning system to facilitate the teaching and learning processes. As a result, many modern universities have developed and utilized the system. For that reason, there is a great need to develop an instrument in which the elearning management system can be evaluated from various aspects such as the system performance, user acceptance, and utilization. The level of the user acceptance is the central focus of this study, known to be strongly related to the level of utilization, and is widely studied by using the famous framework of Davis’ Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The framework is also adopted in the current study and the required data to analyze quantitatively the model are selectively obtained from a sample of 73 respondents. The validity and reliability of the data are evaluated by using the Rasch model. The results suggest that the all 16 items in the questionnaire are valid and reliable to measure the acceptance of thee-learning system.

Mobile learning can be identified as the next stage in the development of e-learning. In this regard, <strong>the purpose of this paper</strong> is to propose a model for mobile learning integration in higher education which is based on analysis of students’ expectations. То achieve this goal, a survey has been conducted among students enrolled in programs in the field of information and communication technologies. The analysis of the collected data shows that students have mobile devices, which they use not only for communication on social networks, but also for education. In addition, their expectations regarding mobile learning have been identified taking into account their study program and their previous experience with an e-learning platform.

O nosso trabalho pretende descrever o processo de desenho e implementação de objetos de aprendizagem orientados para o desenvolvimento de estratégias de resolução de problemas, numa escola superior do ensino politécnico português. Com a apresentação de um caso prático, demonstramos a utilização de um objeto de aprendizagem elaborado no âmbito de uma unidade curricular de Informática e Sistemas de Informação de um curso de licenciatura na área da Saúde, cuja metodologia de implementação se baseou na Problem Based Learning. Technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. To be a successful teacher one should be learner always and should have the mind to comprehend and design new methodologies in their transaction process. ELearning courseware is an effective model of teaching and learning framework that can enhance academic achievement of students. In this research, E-Learning courseware is developed for B.Ed curriculum and the effectiveness of E-Learning courseware is studied on academic achievement of Prospective teachers studying B.Ed course. 80 students studying B.Ed. course are selected as sample by convenient sampling method. 40 of which are assigned in the experimental group and 40 in the control group. Experimental Group is subjected to E-Learning courseware and the Control group is subjected to Conventional method of teaching, Pre-test – Post Test non-equivalent groups design is used for the study. Achievement test developed and validated by the researcher is administered to measure the academic achievement of the prospective teachers as pre-test and post-test. Effectiveness of E-Learning courseware is studied on academic achievement of Prospective teachers studying B.Ed course. In the analysis of data, t-test and descriptive analysis were used. Results showed that there is significant effect of ELearning courseware in enhancing the academic achievement of Prospective Teachers. This research opens new avenues in teaching learning process which can empower students.
