The Effects of IT on Supply Chain Management in the Automobile Industry

This chapter introduces the concept of electronic supply chain design (eSCD) and empirically examines the impacts of eSCD on supply chain management. eSCD is a supply chain design that integrates and coordinates suppliers, manufacturers, logistic channels, and customers using information technology (IT). In this chapter, a model that shows the effects of eSCD on the customization capability of companies was developed. From previous studies, the model identifies three major effects of eSCD—electronic linkage effect, supply chain coordination effect, and co-engineering effect. The model also shows a process through which an electronic supply chain network is transformed from a simple infrastructure for data exchange into a knowledge-sharing network for fast response and customization. The model was tested using the data collected from the automobile industry in Korea. It was shown that eSCD has significant effects on the supply chain coordination and co-engineering. It was also shown that eSCD affects the customization capability.

Tourism supply chain management has become an important research topic as individual firms no longer compete as isolated entities but rather as supply chains in the tourism industry. Despite the evidence that benefits can be gained to improve profitability, competitiveness, and customer satisfaction, the research on how to manage the tourism supply chain is very limited. This research contributes to the literature by applying the theory of constraints (TOC) with systems thinking to tourism supply chain management. It proposes that the key issue in tourism supply chain management is the coordination of business activities and the TOC with systems thinking can effectively support tourism supply chain coordination of the various links and processes. The article examines the TOC performance measures and the drum–buffer–rope model in the context of tourism management and applies the focusing process of the TOC as a continuous improvement approach for tourism supply chain management. The research findings suggest that, given modifications to the TOC terminology and the principles, the TOC principles can work as an excellent approach to facilitate the tourism supply chain management.

Purpose This study aims to present a competitive advantages framework suited for disaster prone regions in the era of climate change, present supply chain cooperation (SCC) as an integral part of GrSCM within the automobile industry and evaluate the competitive advantages framework merits based on SCC as a new implementation tool. Design/methodology/approach In an effort to address limited green supply chain management implementation strategies in disaster prone regions, the paper presents SCC as an economic, social and political implementation tool. To explore this; the study introduces SCC in a three-phase competitive advantages model adopted from the Barney 1995 model (with slight differences). Smart PLS 3.0 software package was adopted to carry out multi-variable data analysis. The study’s assumption is a capital economic system and bases its argument of analysis on stockholder theoretical lenses. Findings Big company size does not significantly affect SCC, suggesting that companies of all size can organize and enhance their network to be cooperative. Companies with cooperative supply chain network tend to have competitive advantages. SCC is also a viable way to manage business risks, be there internal or external. Research limitations/implications One of the study’s limitation is the stockholder theory it adopts, which shoulders its assumptions on a capital economic model of operation. Indeed, the study covered China, which is seen to be a communist-based economy. Another study’s limitation is that it narrows its data collection to disaster prone areas as documented by Guha-Sapir et al. (2012). Consequently, the findings of this study might be only applicable to areas that experience significant level of disruptions usually caused by disaster incidents. Originality/value The study is also the first of its kind to propose a model for automobile manufacturing in disaster prone regions. This is done by introducing SCC as an economic, social and political factor, while risk ranking is introduced as an environmental factor to constitute the external changes that Barney 1995 introduced.

<p align="center"><strong><em>ABSTRACT</em></strong></p><p><em>Designing and managing Industrial capture fisheries Supply Chain is complex and its faces socially bound uncertainties such as poor collaboration, communication and information sharing. Such complexity cannot be reduced through quantitative supply chain design and management techniques.  The aim of this study was design an industrial capture fisheries supply chain in Maluku Province using Soft System Methodology. </em><em>Multi Dimensional Scaling (MDS)and SCOR was applied in analyzing situational conditions related to the sustainability and performance of industrial capture fisheries. Analysis on capture fisheries shows in less sustainable category (43.91)and </em><em> </em><em>the performance of both fishermen and company indicate an excellent and good grade. </em><em>S</em><em>SM analysis generated root definitions:</em><em> </em><em>Ministry of Marine Fisheries, Department of Marine, regional institution and stakeholder of the supply chain (O) realize the sustainable fishing industry and implementation of reliable activities in the fisheries sector and competitive globally (W) which integrates all the units along supply chain and coordinate the flow of materials, information and finance ranging from such aspects : production, downstream industries (handling and processing), up to marketing (T) of the Fishermen, industries processing (C) on the entire supply chain through  effective and efficient mechanism (E) as well as coordination both center and regional institution (A) related to quality and standardization of fishery products, distribution, infrastructure, data and information on fisheries (T)". Penelitian ini bertujuan mendisain model manajemen rantai pasok industri perikanan tangkap yang ideal di Propinsi Maluku. <em>Soft System Methodology</em> (SSM) digunakan sebagai pendekatan kajian yang didukung oleh <em>Multi Dimensional Scalling</em> (MDS) untuk mengukur keberlanjutan industri perikanan tangkap dan <em>Supply Chain Operation Reference</em>(SCOR) untuk menganalisis kinerja industri perikanan tangkap.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keberlanjutan industri perikanan tangkap berada pada kategori kurang berkelanjutan dan kinerja<p class="Abstrakisi">nelayan dan perusahaan berada pada kategori sangat baik dan baik. Analisis SSM menghasilkan <em>root definition</em> “Kementerian Kelautan Perikanan, Dinas Kelautan, PEMDA dan pelaku rantai pasok (O) mewujudkan industri perikanan tangkap yang berkelanjutan dan terselenggaranya aktivitas  di sektor perikanan yang andal dan mempunyai daya saing secara global (W) yang mengintegrasikan  semua unit dalam rantai pasok dan mengkoordinasikan  aliran material, informasi dan keuangan mulai dari aspek produksi, industri hilir (<em>handling dan processing</em>), hingga ke pemasaran (T) dari para Nelayan, industri-industri pengolah (C) pada seluruh rantai pasok  melalui mekanisme yang efektif dan efisien (E) serta koordinasi kelembagaan pusat dan daerah (A) terkait mutu dan standardisasi produk perikanan, distribusi, sarana prasarana, infrasrtuktur serta data dan informasi perikanan (T)”. SMEs form a virtual enterprise—a short-term loose integration, to meet business opportunities; managers of SMEs are looking for a tool that could help them design the strategic model of the supply chain in which they are collaboratively involved. Though the use of e-commerce tools has a lot of potential to improve an enterprise’s collaboration efforts with other enterprises, realizing an e-commerce tool that enables collaborative supply chain design and development is not easy, as collaborating enterprises may each use a different flavor of XML, multiple technology solutions, and have different business rules. This chapter presents a methodology for developing a new e-commerce tool to assist collaborative supply chain management. By this methodology, a new tool that is affordable by the SMEs and offers improved pipeline visibility could be easily implemented.

AbstractAs industries mature, they rely more heavily on supply chain management (SCM) to ensure effective operations leading to greater levels of organisational performance. SCM has been widely covered in many industrial areas and, in line with other burgeoning sectors such as Tourism, an industry focus provides the opportunity to look in-depth at the context-based factors that affect SCM. Developments in digital distribution and rapid technological innovations have resulted in an increased focus on Digital Supply Chains (DSCs), which bring about significant changes to how consumers, customers, suppliers, and manufacturers interact, affecting supply chain design and processes. Through a systematic review of the Videogames Industry Supply Chain Management literature, which serves as a pertinent contextual example of a DSC, we look at how supply chains are affected by structural, market and technological change, such as increased platformisation, disintermediation and the proliferation of digital distribution. We distil these findings into a new research agenda, which identifies themes in line with extant DSC research, provides a series of relevant practice recommendations and identifies opportunities for future research.

With the advent of globalization and fast changing environment, companies are using information and communication systems in the supply chain. Supply chain management information system (SCMIS) has gained a lot of importance because of its ability to reduce costs and increase responsiveness in the supply chain. Review of literature has revealed that the success in implementation of SCMIS and successfully attaining the return expected from the system implemented is a challenge. With such high failure rates scenario, it becomes imperative to identify the risk and the failure factors that may arise during implementation and the ways to tackle these risks. In this chapter, an attempt has been made to establish the challenges, their severity, and improvisation for the successful implementation of SCMIS in the Indian automobile industry. The findings can help the practitioners and managers better understand the challenges, focus the resources, their attention, set up the priorities, and thus improve the chances of successful implementation of SCMIS.
