The ways in which computers have been applied to business have evolved over the past 40 years. In the commonly accepted three-era model of applied computing, the first era focused on automating processes, and the second on providing management information. The current era embraces information technology (IT) as a strategic resource and critical asset of the organization (Jessup & Velacich, 1999; Ward & Griffiths, 1996; and others). IT is a transformation enabler or driver that allows organizations to meet both their short-term and long-term objectives. Under this latter model, organizations expect IT to create new ways to compete, new products, new processes, new marketing channels, and even new organizational forms that promote “better-faster-cheaper.” Strategic IT thus provides an anchor for competitive advantage—enabling the efficiencies, innovation, market expansion, speed, and alliances that differentiate one company from another.

The ability of entrepreneurs to produce new products is fundamental, because the organisational environment changes rapidly. Changes in socio-economic systems, changes in the expectations and needs and desires of customers, are challenges faced by organisations through new products or services as well. Innovations created by companies are the key to competitive advantage that determines the success of an organisation (Kuratko, 2015; Urbancova, 2012). Talent development is the driver of innovation. Googles dramatic ascent and subsequent domination in the past fifteen years of the technology and information industries has financially enabled Google to explore seemingly unrelated projects ranging from Google Mail to the Google Car. In particular, Google has invested a significant amount of resources in the Google Car, an integrated system that allows for the driverless operation of a vehicle. While initial reports indicate that the Google Car driverless automobile will be more safe and efficient than current vehicles, the Google Car is not without its critics. In particular, the existential threat that the car presents to several large industries, including the insurance, health care and construction industries, creates an additional challenge to the success of the Google Car well beyond the standard competitive threats from other established car manufacturers in the automobile industry, which begs the question, Can the Google Car be successful? With so many challenges above and beyond the competitive forces typically threatening long-term profitability, will the Google Car be able to create and sustain a competitive advantage for Google in the driverless car space?

As the competitive business landscape has dramatically changed in the past ten to fifteen years, firms have to face the fact that they should take the necessary steps to decrease the fixed costs and increase the quality for the long-term success and survival. Accordingly, the logistics in general, for the manufacturing companies in particular, becomes more and more important. Numerous companies, providing outsource services such as logistics, have emerged to answer this growing demand. Accordingly, in this study, we aim to reveal the effects of Outsourcing In Logistics Services (OILS) on firm competitiveness and success through Semi-structured interviews conducted on the logistics managers of 7 companies. The findings mainly demonstrate that; i) Companies attach a great deal of importance on OILS and ii) OILS contribute obtaining and sustaining competitive advantage which ultimately results in superior performance.

Recently, there has been a growing trend among information technology (IT) organizations to form strategic alliances to increase competitive advantages in the marketplace. For an organization to exploit the benefits of alliances, human factors and IT factors must be among the basic components of any strategic plan (Kemeny & Yanowitz, 2000). Despite the obvious need to consider human and IT factors when developing a long-term plan, many strategic plans developed in the past that led to alliances have failed to consider human aspects. Examples of failure in the implementation of IT systems due to the lack of consideration of human factors have come to light in recent years, but a comprehensive study of the consideration of human factors in the development of strategic alliances resulting in a major IT system alignment for a firm, is still rare in IT literature.

The EARLINET database is facing a complete reshaping to meet the wide request for more intuitive products and to face the even wider request related to the new initiatives such as Copernicus, the European Earth observation programme. The new design has been carried out in continuity with the past, to take advantage from long-term database. In particular, the new structure will provide information suitable for synergy with other instruments, near real time (NRT) applications, validation and process studies and climate applications.

The Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach is an Aboriginal community located in northern Quebec near the Labrador Border. Given the region’s rich iron deposits, the Naskapi Nation has considerable experience with major mineral development, first in the 1950s to the 1980s, and again in the past decade as companies implement plans for further extraction. This has raised concerns regarding a range of environmental and socio-economic impacts that may be caused by renewed development. These concerns have led to an interest among the Naskapi to develop a means to track community well-being over time using indicators of their own design. Exemplifying community-engaged research, this paper describes the beginning development of such a tool in fall 2012—the creation of a baseline of community well-being against which mining-induced change can be identified. Its development owes much to the remarkable and sustained contribution of many key members of the Naskapi Nation. If on-going surveying is completed based on the chosen indicators, the Nation will be better positioned to recognize shifts in its well-being and to communicate these shifts to its partners. In addition, long-term monitoring will allow the Naskapi Nation to contribute to more universal understanding of the impacts of mining for Indigenous peoples.

This paper examines a few of the numerous factors that may have led to increased youth turnout in 2008 Election. First, theories of voter behavior and turnout are related to courting the youth vote. Several variables that are perceived to affect youth turnout such as party polarization, perceived candidate difference, voter registration, effective campaigning and mobilization, and use of the Internet, are examined. Over the past 40 years, presidential elections have failed to engage the majority of young citizens (ages 18-29) to the point that they became inclined to participate. This trend began to reverse starting in 2000 Election and the youth turnout reached its peak in 2008. While both short and long-term factors played a significant role in recent elections, high turnout among youth voters in 2008 can be largely attributed to the Obama candidacy and campaign, which mobilized young citizens in unprecedented ways.
