Towards a Rational Technology Approach

This chapter is based on the premise that all information system research must conclude with operational suggestions that can be considered for implementation in organizations. A number of managerial implications emerge from the findings of this study and based on these implications, suggestions can be made to guide the actions of the business managers in their attempt to enhance the levels of trust in B2B e-commerce. It is well recognized that the characteristics of the attendant environment in each business organization is different, and therefore it is not possible to give generalized suggestions in most of the cases. Therefore, an attempt has been made to explore the possibility of identifying a few decision options relating to adoption of various technologies and practices that have the potential to enhance the levels of trust among the trading partners in B2B e-commerce. This has been achieved by compiling a comprehensive list of relevant technology tools and associated benchmark practices which can be used for making a rational choice after due examination of the environmental constraints and cost considerations. Some of the implications and operational suggestions may appear to be repetitions of what has been already said in the earlier chapters, but they have been presented in this chapter with a different perspective.

Previous research shows that selecting an appropriate theory or model has always remained a critical task for IS researchers. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there are few papers that review and compare the acceptance theories and models at the individual level. Hence, this article aims to overcome this problem by providing a critical review of eight of the most influential theories that have been used to predict and explain human behaviour towards adoption of various technologies at the individual level. This article also summarizes their evolution; highlight the key constructs, extensions, strengths, and criticisms from a selective list of published articles appeared in the literature related to IS. This review provides a holistic picture for future researchers in selecting appropriate single/multiple theoretical models/constructs based on their strengths and weaknesses and in terms of predictive power and path significance. It is concluded that a well-established theory should consider the personal, social, cultural, technological, organizational and environmental factors

PurposeAs information systems (IS) phenomena continue to emerge and evolve in our ever-changing economic and social contexts, researchers need to increase their focus on time in order to enrich our theories. The purpose of this paper is to present broad suggestions for IS researchers about how they can direct some of their research efforts to consider, conceptualize and incorporate time into research endeavors and how they might be mindful about considering and specifying time-related scope conditions of their research efforts.Design/methodology/approachThe authors synthesize empirical studies and discuss three distinct yet related frameworks of time and the benefits they can provide. The authors choose two research streams that reflect dynamic economic and social contexts – namely, enterprise systems and social networks – to illustrate how time and frameworks of time can be leveraged in our theory development and research design.FindingsThe authors demonstrate that limited research in IS has incorporated a rich conceptualization and/or discussion of time. The authors build on this gap to highlight guidelines that researchers can adopt to enrich their view of time.Originality/valueGiven the dynamic nature of IS phenomena and the increased availability of longitudinal data, the authors’ suggestions aim to urge and guide IS researchers about ways in which they can incorporate time into their theory and study designs.

Ubiquitous learning features intuitive ways of identifying appropriate learning collaborators and right learning contents and services at the right place and at the right time. Consequently, there are many aspects that must be considered in designing computing applications that support this kind of learning. In this chapter, ubiquitous learning is introduced and characterized, the challenges that must be faced by those in charge of designing and developing such applications are reviewed, and the state of the art of this recently initiated line of research at the Informatics and Information System Research Institute of the National University of Santiago del Estero are presented. The developments achieved to date as well as the future guidelines are also shown.
