Portfolios can serve a crucial role in helping students develop their critical thinking in writing, thereby promoting write-to-learn philosophy in education. Still, not any portfolio's content and approach can guarantee the achievement of this goal. Teachers' concern in promoting students' critical thinking needs to be reflected in their decision that is related to the evidences of students' needs that helps to select their approaches of integrating and using them into class. Students' reflection needs to underpin all stages of portfolio assessment through providing opportunities for their decision-making, initiation and creativity. Therefore, this chapter puts forward a student portfolio model along with its content and process of use. This learning tool was integrated within the course of Written Expression and used by 33 students at the Department of English at Abdelhamid Ibn Badis University during the academic year 2013-2014. Recommendations are also provided in order to make it a vehicle for critical thinking.

`How should public education in democratic states deal with the cultural diversity brought about by contemporary globalization? My suggestion is that key to democratic public education is the obligation to foster in students the skills and abilities, and attitudes and dispositions, needed to participate fully in democratic decision-making. Of central importance are the abilities and dispositions required for critical thinking and rational argumentation: evaluating arguments of others, constructing arguments of one’s own that might rationally persuade one’s fellow citizens, etc. Without these abilities and dispositions, full participation in democratic decision-making is impossible. But fostering them is problematic when students are members of cultures in which argumentation is frowned upon. In this paper I address this tension, and argue that while respecting cultural differences is of the first importance, in democracies it cannot override the requirements of democracy itself. When these two clash, the requirements of democratic participation must take precedence.

Teachers as learning agents must be able to present the learning process contextually by involving the active participation of students. Some students learn best when they have the opportunity to interact with real objects through inquiry activities that will help students deepen their understanding of a concept. Inquiry learning is one that can be adapted to students' abilities, can build cognitive structures, and can motivate students to think critically. This research is classified as descriptive research. The subjects of the research were students of class X SMA Negeri 4 Barabai as many as 78 students in the 2015/2016 academic year on the mushroom group material. The research data were in the form of observations on students' critical thinking skills which were analyzed descriptively using categorical methods, namely very good (≥ 3), good (2-2.99), not good (1-1.99). While cognitive learning outcomes were obtained through tests and success was determined based on KKM = 67 with classical completeness 85%. The results showed that students' critical thinking skills were at least good, namely formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, conducting experiments, and making conclusions, while formulating problems, and analyzing data still needed improvement. Meanwhile, students' cognitive learning outcomes have not yet achieved minimal completeness.
