Building Blocks of the Industry and Strategizing

Industry features are considered by Porter, Schmalensee, and many other scholars as the determinants of effective strategy formulation and implementation. While industries are widely different from each other, some common features shape all existing and future industries. This chapter aims to identify these common building blocks of industries and their possible effects on strategizing for the future in a fast transitioning business world. The chapter employs a systematic literature review from the top related journals with at least one of the nine keywords about the industry. The chapter reviews 47 factors or characteristics that form every industry. These industry features are grouped into ten sets of elements, which shapes the ten forces framework, reflecting the interaction among building-blocks of the industry with each other and with strategy implementation practice inside an organization. The chapter concludes by proposing the 'macro-environment, industry, and organization' (MIO) model, which could be utilized by integrating three levels of analyses.

This study aims to systematically identify and review studies on anti-human trafficking campaigns published in peer-reviewed journals to determine the extent to which such campaigns have been critically and rigorously evaluated so as to guide future policies and practice in this area and to identify the main characteristics, problems, and challenges associated with the campaigns in the identified studies. This systematic literature review identified 16 studies that have assessed anti-human trafficking campaigns but found that none of these included outcome, process, or impact evaluations. As identified in our study, anti-human trafficking campaigns tend to rely on advertising techniques to target vulnerable groups and the wider public, with the primary aim of informing and educating. Further, a thematic analysis of the studies identified problems in eight areas that require attention in the future development of anti-human trafficking campaigns: stereotyping, compounding human trafficking with migration, conflating prostitution with human trafficking, sexualization/erotization of women, victimization, role of anti-human trafficking organizations, data shortcomings, and oversimplification of human trafficking. Studies presenting the results of evaluations of social marketing anti-human trafficking campaigns are urgently needed to show which social marketing tools work and to provide an evidence base for future campaigns.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a systematic literature review to determine the factors that relate to successful business intelligence (BI) system implementation. Design/methodology/approach The study has a collection of literature that highlights potential references in relation to factors for system implementation in relation to BI. There is the employment of “content analysis”, given that the study purpose is the achievement of deep understanding of the variety of factors of implementation that other researchers have previously identified. Findings An initial investigation of 38 empirical studies on the implementation of BI led to ten factors being compiled. Difficulties in implementation were found to exist in relation to the operationalisation of large numbers of factors within organisations. The implementation factors were analysed and then sorted into a descending order based upon their frequency of occurrence. Research limitations/implications The research is limited to consider BI implementation factors. Moreover, literature is collected from selected databases and journals from 1998 to 2018. Practical implications Researchers of BI may, within the future, develop models for the measurement of the implementation level of BI within industries along with the sustaining of them. Moreover, work-based learning industries can benefit by adopting the results of this study for the effective implementation of BI. The implementation factors can be seen as key constructs upon which there may be the undertaking of more statistical analyses. Originality/value The original output from this research can help researchers’ in the future in enhancing identification of studies that are relevant for the review of literature for their research.

Relation between e-Government and social media is an inseparable relationship. The purpose of e-Government who wants to improve public services, with the help of information and communication technology. The best solution is using social media. In Indonesia, e-Government is a concept that is implemented not only by the central government, but also by regional/local governments. Right now, many local governments in Indonesia already implemented e-Government. However, not all of Indonesia local governments that implemented egovernment have a social media-based e-Government application. There is a chance that a certain city/regency at Indonesia using same social media-based e-Government application. If the application is seen in terms of features, each application also has different features combination, which are the strengths and the uniqueness of each application. In this study, there are 9 applications that examined from 9 cities / regency in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to analyse the relation between e-government and social media, in terms of using social media features and identified features that exist in each e-Government application that examined from 9 cities / regency in Indonesia with Systematic Literature Review. The feature found will be categorized with feature functionality categorization: Identity, Conversations, Sharing, Presence, Relationships, Reputation, and Groups. Each feature found can be having more than 1 feature functionality. The result of this study can be used as an indicator about features available at social media-based e-Government application and this study can be used to be a comparison or references for making another social media-based e-Government application in the future

Improving the quality, developing and implementing systems that can provide advantages to students, and predicting students’ success during the term, at the end of the term, or in the future are some of the primary aims of education. Due to its unique ability to create relationships and obtain accurate results, artificial intelligence and machine learning are tools used in this field to achieve the expected goals. However, the diversity of studies and the differences in their content create confusion and reduce their ability to pioneer future studies. In this study, we performed a systematic literature review of student performance prediction studies in three different databases between 2010 and 2020. The results are presented as percentages by categorizing them as either model, dataset, validation, evaluation, or aims. The common points and differences in the studies are determined, and critical gaps and possible remedies are presented. The results and identified gaps could be eliminated with standardized evaluation and validation strategies. It is determined that student performance prediction studies should be more frequently focused on deep learning models in the future. Finally, the problems that can be solved using a global dataset created by a global education information consortium, as well as its advantages, are presented.

PurposeThe current industrial revolution is powered by data, which is also referred as Industry 4.0. The Industry 4.0 has attracted significant attention from academia and the industry professionals. The supply chain integration (SCI) has played a significant role in enhancing supply chain performance and organizational performance. This study explores the relationship between Industry 4.0 and SCI via an extensive literature review to understand the various levels of integration with the supply chain processes and to identify missing links, through a framework, and suggest further research directions.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, we have used systematic literature review approach to identify the building blocks of the conceptual framework, which is the main contribution of the present study. We have used Scopus database to search literature using keywords.FindingsThe study offers some interesting insights that may help scholars to advance theoretical debates. Moreover, the study also provides interesting direction to the practitioners engaged in supply chain management in data-driven environment. In this study, we have proposed a conceptual framework for the adoption of Industry 4.0 and SCI.Research limitations/implicationsIn this study we have proposed a conceptual framework. However, the framework is yet to be empirically tested. Hence, we caution readers to evaluate the findings of the present study in context to its limitations. This is an attempt to develop a conceptual framework which may be tested using longitudinal data.Originality/valueThe present work helps in integrating two independent subjects', i.e. Industry 4.0 and SCI. The theoretical framework presented here integrates Industry 4.0 and SCI which can be useful to the practitioners and policymakers engaged in implementing Industry 4.0.

The current inclusion of agile methodologies in web-oriented projects has been considered on a large-scale by software developers. However, the benefits and limitations go beyond the comforts that project managers delimit when choosing them. Selecting a methodology involves more than only the associated processes or some documentation. Based on the above, we could define as the main concerns the approach with which we identify the methodology, the needs of the company, the size, and qualities of the project, and especially the characteristics of agile development that they possess. However, there are several difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology due to the features in common; Will it be suitable for my project? What challenges will be presented in the process? Will my team understand each stage? Will I be able to deliver software that satisfies the client? Project managers create these questions, which seem manageable but have huge effects. This paper presents a systematic literature review based on the analysis of the approaches of six web development methodologies. The aim of the study is to analyze the approaches presented by relevant methodologies, identifying their common agile characteristics and managing to contrast both its benefits and limitations during a project. As a result, we could itemize five common features, which are presented within the processes; (1) flexibility, (2) constant communication of the workgroup, (3) use of UML, (4) the inclusion of the end-user and (5) some documentation.

PurposeEntrepreneurs' pivot decisions are poorly understood. The purpose of this paper is to review the existing literature on pivot decisions to identify the different conceptualizations, research streams and main theoretical building blocks and to offer a baseline framework for future studies on this phenomenon.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review of 86 peer-reviewed papers published between January 2008 and October 2020, focusing on the pivot decision in startups, was performed through bibliometric, descriptive and content analyses.FindingsThe literature review identifies four research streams concerning the pivot concept – pivot design, cognitive, negotiation and environmental perspectives. Building on previous studies, this paper provides a refined definition of a pivot that bridges elements from the four research streams identified: a pivot comprises strategic decisions made after a failure (or in the face of potential failure) of the current business model and leads to changes in the firm's course of action, resource reconfiguration and possible modifications of one or more business model elements. This study proposes a framework that elaborates the pivot literature by identifying four stages of the pivot process addressed in the existing literature: recognition, generating options, seizing and testing and reconfiguration.Originality/valueThis study provides a comprehensive review, enabling researchers to establish a baseline for developing future pivot research. Furthermore, it improves the conceptualization of pivots by summarizing prior definitions and proposing a refined definition that places decision-making and judgment at its center. That introduces new contextual and behavioral elements, contributing to a better understanding of how entrepreneurs assess alternative courses of action and envision possible outcomes to redirect a venture after failure.
