Learning About the Authentic Nature of Scientific Work From Professional Scientists

Stephen R. Burgin

In this chapter, it is argued that in order to be able to participate in authentic science through something like a research apprenticeship, students and teachers alike must be well versed in what professional scientists do as they conduct their research. Partnerships with working scientists can be leveraged in a number of ways to do just this. As a result, teachers and students can be made aware of the professional work of scientists and the ways in which they can participate in and mentor others to engage in authentic research both in and out of the classroom.

SUMMARYResearch on emerging infectious diseases calls for a work on collections of pathogens (including hosts or vectors from which the pathogens were isolated), related to human and animal health, to wildlife or on the environmental material. In this respect, the adoption of a One Health perspective is determined by the need for a common approach to consider the collection, storage and use of pathogens coming from human or non-human sources, and particularly when the same pathogen is taken from different environments. In response to this development, our purpose is to delineate a flexible regulation framework concerning collections of pathogens from various origins or hosts and their associated data in order to facilitate scientific work and research partnerships. The legal and ethical cutting-edge research on Biomedical Big Data is particularly stimulating when it comes to address challenges related to collections or biobanks of pathogens such as prior informed consent and accessibility, Material Transfer Agreement or benefit sharing.

Context: In general, teachers and students have distorted views about the functioning of a scientific work. This research uses the episode of the historical construction of the Second Law of Movement and seven distorted views on the subject. Objectives: This work aims to exemplify the distorted views students can construct about scientific endeavour if a didactic approach that does not consider the history and philosophy of science is used. Design: Seven distorted views regarding scientific work are explained and, subsequently, exemplified from the episode in question, showing how this history is seen, in general, in textbooks, and by most teachers. Environment and participants: This is a theoretical analysis, not including participants. The materials used were primary and secondary bibliographic sources. Data collection and analysis: Seven distorted views on science, from the episode of the historical construction of the Second Law of Movement, were collected, and a historical-philosophical reflection was carried out on them. Results: Following the presentation of the views and examples, criticism and allusion to how this episode should be treated are offered. Conclusions: Throughout the text, as well as in its final considerations, relevant aspects to be worked on in the classroom are discussed, for a critical view of the construction of scientific knowledge.

This study was conducted to determine the Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan learning strategies in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic situation which required online learning. In collecting data for this scientific work using methods in the form of interviews and observations during the research process. This study aims to find out how the strategies applied by SD Muhammadiyah 3 Pandaan in learning Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan during online learning take place. The results show that in implementing learning strategies in the midst of a pandemic, SD Muhammadiyah 3 Pandaan school provides fun online learning that does not pressure students so that students feel happy in learning. In learning Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan SD Muhammadiyah 3 Pandaan managed to package memorable online learning by utilizing technological advances such as learning through live streaming, google meet, and learning videos. In the teaching and learning process of Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan learning, the school, especially Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan teachers, also applies rote learning as well as Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan learning when the learning is face to face directly. The difference is when online learning is for memorizing students learn and submit their assignments in the form of videos that are sent to the teacher. The results of the study, Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan teachers more often apply learning through videos containing subject matter so that students can access it freely without being bound by time. The success of online learning at SD Muhammadiyah 3 Pandaan is due to the role of teachers and students who can support each other for communication to continue so that there is reciprocity in the learning process even though distance learning.

Abstract. Early detection of vascular damage in atherosclerosis and accurate assessment of cardiovascular risk factors are the basis for appropriate treatment strategies in cardiovascular medicine. The current review focuses on non-invasive ultrasound-based methods for imaging of atherosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction is an accepted early manifestation of atherosclerosis. The most widely used technique to study endothelial function is non-invasive, flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery under high-resolution ultrasound imaging. Although an increased intima-media thickness value is associated with future cardiovascular events in several large population studies, systematic use is not recommended in clinical practice for risk assessment of individual persons. Carotid plaque analysis with grey-scale median, 3-D ultrasound or contrast-enhanced ultrasound are promising techniques for further scientific work in prevention and therapy of generalized atherosclerosis.

Men’s professional work roles require different attributes according to the gender-typicality of their occupation (female- versus male-dominated). We predicted that levels of men’s strain and job satisfaction would be predicted by levels of self-ascribed instrumental and expressive attributes. Therefore, we tested for positive effects of instrumentality for men in general, and instrumentality in interaction with expressiveness for men in female-dominated occupations in particular. Data were based on a survey of 213 men working in female-dominated occupations and 99 men working in male-dominated occupations. We found instrumentality to be negatively related to men’s strain and positively related to their job satisfaction. We also found expressiveness of men in female-dominated occupations to be related to reduced strain when instrumentality was low. This suggests it is important for men to be able to identify highly with either instrumentality or expressiveness when regulating role demands in female-dominated occupations.

Based on an analysis of John Exner’s peer-reviewed published work from 1959 to 2007, plus a brief comment for an editorial in Rorschachiana, the author draws a comprehensive picture of the scientific work of this outstanding personality. The article is divided into three sections: (1) the experimental studies on the Rorschach, (2) the clinical studies using the Rorschach, and (3) Exner’s “testament,” which we draw from the last paper he saw published before his death (Exner, 2001/2002). The experimental studies were aimed at better understanding the nature of the test, in particular the respective roles of perception and projection in the response process. These fundamental studies led to a deeper understanding of the complex mechanisms involved in the Rorschach responses and introduced some hypotheses about the intentions of the author of the test. The latter were subsequently confirmed by the preparatory sketches and documents of Hermann Rorschach, which today can be seen at the H. Rorschach Archives and Museum in Bern (Switzerland). Exner’s research has evidenced the notion that the Rorschach is a perceptive-cognitive-projective test.
