The widespread outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic forced almost every aspect of our lives to shift to online modalities. One outcome of the pandemic was to effectively establish digital learning as a major system for education. The purpose of this chapter is to describe the development and implementation of a web-based resource for college instruction. The foundation for this pedagogical tool is sociocultural learning theory. This instructional tool has been deployed with over 2000 students to date. Its successful employment with college students in India and the USA is outlined, and suggestions are included for its generalized use to other content and courses.

In the era of digital learning, multimedia-based classroom has been commonly used in higher education including Malaysian higher education institutions. A case study has been performed to evaluate web-based learning using Level 1 to 3 of Kirkpatrick's model in a multi-disciplinary course at Multimedia University, Malaysia. In this study, mixed method research was employed in which triangulation was performed from multiple sources of data collection to give deeper understanding. Students perceived that learning with multimedia was enjoyable. They were also motivated in learning and engaged through the use of web module as multimedia was perceived to motivate them and make learning fun. Students showed significant improvements in their knowledge based on the pre-test and post-test results on learning evaluation. Students were perceived to transfer the learning from web-based learning into the learning outcome. The systematic evaluation can provide the feedback that educators and institution as a whole need to improve the learning environment and programme quality. This study contributes to the research field by adding another perspective in evaluations of web-based learning. It also provides empirical evidence on student perspectives, learning and behaviour in a private university. It demonstrated that the Kirkpatrick's model is useful as an evaluation tool to be used in higher education.

The use of the internet for teaching and learning has become a global trend among the education practitioners over the recent decades. The integration of technology and media into Malaysian English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms has altered the methods in English Language Teaching (ELT). In response to the impact of technology in ELT, the needs of a supplementary instructional platform, and the limitations of the learning management system (LMS) in fostering second language (L2) writing skill, a web-based instructional tool was designed and developed based on a theoretical-and-pedagogical framework namely Web-based Cognitive Writing Instruction (WeCWI). To determine the key concepts while identifying the research gap, this study conducted a literature review using online search on specific keywords including “blog”, “Blogger”, “widget”, and “hyperlink” found in the scholarly articles. Based on the review of literature, Blogger was opted due to its on-screen customisable layout editing features that can be embedded with web widgets and hypertext that share the identical features. By looking into the relationship between perceptual learning preferences on perceived information and the visual representations in iconic and symbolic views, the blogs can come with two different user interfaces embedded with web widgets or hypertext. The blog with web widgets appears in a graphical form of iconic view; while hypertext only displays textual form of symbolic view without involving the visual references. With the injection of web widgets and hypertext into the blogs, WeCWI attempts to offer a technological enhanced ELT solution to overcome the poor writing skill with a better engagement while learning online through the learners’ preferred perceptual learning preferences.

AbstractObjectiveExcess meat consumption, particularly of red and processed meats, is associated with nutritional and environmental health harms. While only a small portion of the population is vegetarian, surveys suggest many Americans may be reducing their meat consumption. To inform education campaigns, more information is needed about attitudes, perceptions, behaviours and foods eaten in meatless meals.DesignA web-based survey administered in April 2015 assessed meat reduction behaviours, attitudes, what respondents ate in meatless meals and sociodemographic characteristics.SettingNationally representative, web-based survey in the USA.SubjectsUS adults (n 1112) selected from GfK Knowledgeworks’ 50 000-member online panel. Survey weights were used to assure representativeness.ResultsTwo-thirds reported reducing meat consumption in at least one category over three years, with reductions of red and processed meat most frequent. The most common reasons for reduction were cost and health; environment and animal welfare lagged. Non-meat reducers commonly agreed with statements suggesting that meat was healthy and ‘belonged’ in the diet. Vegetables were most often consumed ‘always’ in meatless meals, but cheese/dairy was also common. Reported meat reduction was most common among those aged 45–59 years and among those with lower incomes.ConclusionsThe public and environmental health benefits of reducing meat consumption create a need for campaigns to raise awareness and contribute to motivation for change. These findings provide rich information to guide intervention development, both for the USA and other high-income countries that consume meat in high quantities.

The purpose of this chapter, which uses sociocultural learning theory as its framework and a mixed-methods study design, is to understand the differences between personal culture orientation and online learning satisfaction by examining culture at the macro and micro level in an online learning environment. More specifically, this chapter examines the cultural orientation differences among graduate students enrolled in at least one online course in the fall of 2011 at a Western institution of higher education and how these cultural differences impact their level of satisfaction with online learning. Both quantitative and qualitative data is collected, respectively, via surveys, and interviews indicate that, although culture does not directly affect satisfaction, there is a need to raise awareness about the critical factors that may affect online learning experience and to provide guidance for practice and future research.

Self-reflection based on the analysis of one's own teaching performance has proven to be a powerful method for developing student teachers´ professional knowledge. The aim of this study was to investigate how a web-based guiding framework involving the use of a pedagogical tool for planning and reflection in conjunction with annotated video recorded lessons, written reflections, and a teacher educator's feedback, might provide a beneficial method for student teacher self-reflection. The study included 56 student teachers performing their in-service training in science teaching. The student teachers completed a questionnaire where they had to respond to statements about their experiences of the framework. The results indicate that a guiding framework that includes analysis of video-recorded teaching is essential for a self-reflective process to become effective. Further development of the framework might be to enable student teachers to participate in synchronous discussions with peers and teacher educators about their video-recorded lesson.

ObjectivesTo determine how self-reported level of exposure to patients with novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) affected the perceived safety, training and well-being of residents and fellows.MethodsWe administered an anonymous, voluntary, web-based survey to a convenience sample of trainees worldwide. The survey was distributed by email and social media posts from April 20th to May 11th, 2020. Respondents were asked to estimate the number of patients with COVID-19 they cared for in March and April 2020 (0, 1–30, 31–60, >60). Survey questions addressed (1) safety and access to personal protective equipment (PPE), (2) training and professional development and (3) well-being and burnout.ResultsSurveys were completed by 1420 trainees (73% residents, 27% fellows), most commonly from the USA (n=670), China (n=150), Saudi Arabia (n=76) and Taiwan (n=75). Trainees who cared for a greater number of patients with COVID-19 were more likely to report limited access to PPE and COVID-19 testing and more likely to test positive for COVID-19. Compared with trainees who did not take care of patients with COVID-19 , those who took care of 1–30 patients (adjusted OR [AOR] 1.80, 95% CI 1.29 to 2.51), 31–60 patients (AOR 3.30, 95% CI 1.86 to 5.88) and >60 patients (AOR 4.03, 95% CI 2.12 to 7.63) were increasingly more likely to report burnout. Trainees were very concerned about the negative effects on training opportunities and professional development irrespective of the number of patients with COVID-19 they cared for.ConclusionExposure to patients with COVID-19 is significantly associated with higher burnout rates in physician trainees.

ObjectiveTo determine the feasibility of combining routinely recorded perinatal data from several databases in high-income countries to assess the risk of recurrent stillbirth. MethodsWeb-based questionnaire survey with reminder emails and searching of relevant country websites. Results120 countries/regions in Canada, Europe and the USA were invited to participate and 83 (69%) responded. Of those one had no data, and two did not wish to take part. The remaining 80 were sent the questionnaire and 63 (53%) were completed. Twenty-seven countries/regions reported that they collect information on all perinatal events (including early pregnancy loss), 34 on live births and stillbirths and two only live births (stillbirths recorded in a separate database). Most countries (53/63) can link two or more pregnancies occurring in the same woman. Data and information extracted from the Australian and New Zealand Government websites showed that information on all perinatal events is collected nationally in New Zealand and in 5/8 regions in Australia. Both Australia and New Zealand can link two or more pregnancies occurring in the same woman. Maternal age and caffeine consumption were the most and least consistently collected demographic indicators respectively. Diabetes mellitus and mental health problems, birthweight and obstetric cholestasis the most and least consistently collected for medical conditions and pregnancy condition/complications. Procedures for gaining access to data vary between countries. ConclusionThis study demonstrates that it is possible to link pregnancies in the same woman to assess the risk of recurrent stillbirth using routinely collected perinatal data in all states/territories in Australia, 7/8 responding provinces/territories in Canada, 21/27 responding countries/regions in Europe, New Zealand and 26/28 responding states in the USA. The scope of the databases and quality and extent of data collected (thus their potential use) varied, as did procedures for accessing their data.

Despite the increasing availability of chemicals, the number of New Drug Approvals (NDA) from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) remains unchanged. The number of chemical structures available online via web-based open source applications will reach the symbolic 1 billion in the 10 next years. However, for no apparent reasons, the number of NDA accepted yearly has not changed in the past 25 years. One of the emerging paradigms of Big Pharma is that the more we know about molecular mechanisms and cell signaling pathways, the less we understand how to use this knowledge to make New Chemical Entities (NCE). Moreover, the annual number of pharmaceutical patents collected in the OCSE database has virtually not increased. Unexpectedly, the number of patents originating in the USA is decreasing significantly, while Asia is doing very well. The comparison between the number of NCEs and the American investment in Research and Development (R&D) in the last 35 years shows that to obtain a new drug blockbuster, the total investment is quasi 4 USD billion. One of the peculiarities is the inverse relationship between the investment in R&D and the continued shortfall in productivity. A main reason for this decline is that the quality of scientific reasoning done by experienced chemists is too often replaced by Big Data . It is time to change the role of chemistry in Big Pharma and to re-position it as the central science to progress and to lead to much needed innovation.
