Human Factors Problems of Wearable Computers

In this chapter wearable computers are considered from the perspective of human factors. The basic argument is that wearable computers can be considered as a form of prosthesis. In broad terms, a prosthesis could be considered in terms of replacement (i.e., for damaged limbs or organs), correction (i.e., correction to ‘normal’ vision or hearing with glasses or hearing aids), or enhancement of some capability. Wearable computers offer the potential to enhance cognitive performance and as such could act as cognitive prosthesis, rather than as a physical prosthesis. However, wearable computers research is still very much at the stage of determining how the device is to be added to the body and what capability we are enhancing.

This study aimed to determine whether pupils who have breakfast just before a cognitive demand, do not regularly skip breakfast, and consume a high-quality breakfast present higher cognitive performance than those who do not; furthermore, to establish differences according to their nutritional status. In this study, 1181 Chilean adolescents aged 10–14 years participated. A global cognitive score was computed through eight tasks, and the body mass index z-score (BMIz) was calculated using a growth reference for school-aged adolescents. The characteristics of breakfast were self-reported. Analyses of covariance were performed to determine differences in cognitive performance according to BMIz groups adjusted to sex, peak height velocity, physical fitness global score, and their schools. A positive association was found in adolescents’ cognitive performance when they had breakfast just before cognitive tasks, did not regularly skip breakfast, presented at least two breakfast quality components, and included dairy products. No significant differences were found between breakfast components, including cereal/bread and fruits/fruit juice. Finally, pupils who were overweight/obese who declared that they skipped breakfast regularly presented a lower cognitive performance than their normal-BMIz peers. These findings suggest that adolescents who have breakfast just prior to a cognitive demand and regularly have a high quality breakfast have better cognitive performance than those who do not. Educative nutritional strategies should be prioritized, especially in “breakfast skippers” adolescents living with overweight/obesity.

Starting from business intelligence (BI) reference models, this work proposes to extend the multi-dimensional data modelling approach to integrate human factors (HF)-related dimensions. The overall goal is to promote a fine grain understanding of the derived key performance indicators (KPIs) through an enhanced characterization of the operational level of work context. HF research has traditionally approached critical domains and complex socio-technical systems with a chief consideration of human situated action. Grounded on a review of the body of knowledge of the HF field, this work proposes the business intelligence for human factors (BI4HF) framework. It intends to provide guidance on pertinent data identification, collection methods, modelling, and integration within a BI project endeavour. BI4HF foundations are introduced, and a use case on a manufacturing industry organization is presented. The outcome of the enacted BI project referred in the use case allowed new analytical capabilities regarding newly derived and existing KPIs related to operational performance, providing insight into the value of the BI4HF framework.

This paper presents a new structure for hearing aids. Normally, the power consumption and user experience are contradictory. The proposed hearing aid structure mainly consists of three parts: the earpieces, the mobile computing platform, and the real-time speech-enhancement application. It can run complex algorithms without carrying out heavy calculations on the processors in the hearing aid. Thus, the binaural algorithm is utilized without being limited by complexity and power consumption to improve the user experience. Moreover, the speech-enhancement algorithm can be updated much more easily than in traditional built-in digital signal process hearing aids. A good level of user experience is achieved by combining the hearing aid and mobile computing platform with a 400-MHz transceiver; furthermore, the 400-MHz transceiver can reduce path loss around the body. The concept verification process showed that the overall usage of the central processing unit in the smartphone is around 16%, the signal-to-noise ratios show at least a 30% improvement in some environments, and the whole system delay is 8.8 ms. The presented objective and subjective results show significant improvements regarding user experience and usability brought about by the proposed structure.

The aim of the study was to explore the effect of vents on the speech discrimination scores and electroacoustic characteristics of body level hearing aids. The Nineteen adults who participated in the study had mild to moderate sloping sensori-neural hearing loss and were in the age range of 18-70 years. Apart from 19 hearing aids users additional 11 hearing aids were also taken for the study of electro-acoustic characteristics only. Major changes in the electroacoustic characteristics of the body worn hearing aids was observed on HFA OSPL90, FOG and EINL which reduced to 7.31%, 9.19% and 7.72% when parallel vent of 2mm were bored in the regular ear moulds respectively. Parallel/ Diagonal vents improved the Speech Discrimination score by 9%. Background: Anthropometry is the measurements of the body parts in the living or dead persons with the help of instruments. Many studies in the past are done for various purposes such as: adding data to statistical data bank, to estimate stature, age differences. The study on the measurement of ear is also helpful to forensic expert for individual identity, to cosmetic surgeon to correct shape and size or reconstruct the auricle, to electronic companies to prepare hearing aids and lastly to prosthetic makers who required average measurement of the auricle to prepare prosthesis. Aim and objective of the study: The aim of the study was to determine the normal anthropometric measurement of external ear in male and female Nepalese and Indian medical students. Material and methods: This study was conducted on 200 medical students (Nepalese students 134 and Indian student 66). The study was conducted during October 2017 to November 2017. All the important parameters were obtained using vernier caliper. Results: In Indian male auricular height and lobular height was found more than Nepalese. Auricular width was equal in both. Lobular width was more in left auricle and equal in right auricle in female. All parameters are more in Indian than Nepalese. Conclusion: These measurements are helpful for forensic expert in individual identity, for cosmetic surgeries, correction of anomalies of auricle, for designing hearing aids and prepare prosthesis.

Knowledge of human capability to exert strength from the body (usually using hands or feet) to an external object (such as a control, or while lifting a load) is of great interest to the human factors engineer. Definition and measurement of human strength has been of considerable interest in various disciplines, such as physiology, psychology, biomechanics, sports physiology, physical education, and of course in human factors and ergonomics. With such a diversity of disciplines and interests, it is not surprising to find the concept, the problem, the techniques of solving it, and the results to be diverse, in fact partly incompatible. This undesirable condition needs to be resolved. For this, several eminent researchers, studying different aspects of the “strength” problem, are presenting their thoughts, experiences, and solutions. We do not dare to hope that this symposium will in fact solve the problem, define what human strength is, how it can be measured, and how the data may be applied. Still, we expect this to be a first and deciding step in bringing together the various fields interested in human strength.
