Supporting Object Oriented Modeling Techniques

This chapter focuses on exploring the capability of the CAME environment, to support a problem area that requires a design approach that uses the modeling techniques of an object oriented method. The problem presented lies in the design and development of a computerized automobile map system using the modeling techniques prescribed by the OMT method (Rumbaugh et al., 1990). As this problem area requires an object modeling technique, the need to advocate UML was not necessary. The case study is concerned with the introduction of computerized display systems in automobiles, and one of the potential applications for these systems is automated map display. The map system should provide access to a collection of maps for a region. Within this region, the maps should show cities, towns, and the routes between them. The maps should also display restaurants, hotels, and other points of interest to travelers. Within large cities, enough roads will be shown to give an efficient route between any two points. The system should automate as much of the access and displaying of the maps as possible. Simple function buttons will be provided to allow the user to zoom in or out, or pan across the map in any direction. The system should control display clutter automatically by showing only the most important features at the selected zoom level. In the default mode, a region surrounding the cars’ current position will be shown, and the display should scroll automatically to reveal new map features as the car moves. The automobile’s position will be determined using a global positioning device that computes position based on satellite signals. The above outlines the functionality required from a computerized automobile map system.

BORM (Business Object Relationship Modelling) is a methodology developed to capture the knowledge of process-based business systems. It has been in development since 1993 and has proved an effective method, which is popular with both users and analysts. This paper presents BORM, its tools, and methods via a case study of the agrarian information system. BORM is based on the combination of object-oriented approach and process-based modelling. Also, an advantage of BORM is the small number of concepts required combined with a considerable expressiveness. In this way, BORM is in the tradition of pure approach established over the past years by structured modeling techniques.

Core-periphery structure, the arrangement of a network into a dense core and sparse periphery, is a versatile descriptor of various social, biological, and technological networks. In practice, different core-periphery algorithms are often applied interchangeably despite the fact that they can yield inconsistent descriptions of core-periphery structure. For example, two of the most widely used algorithms, the k-cores decomposition and the classic two-block model of Borgatti and Everett, extract fundamentally different structures: The latter partitions a network into a binary hub-and-spoke layout, while the former divides it into a layered hierarchy. We introduce a core-periphery typology to clarify these differences, along with Bayesian stochastic block modeling techniques to classify networks in accordance with this typology. Empirically, we find a rich diversity of core-periphery structure among networks. Through a detailed case study, we demonstrate the importance of acknowledging this diversity and situating networks within the core-periphery typology when conducting domain-specific analyses.

Moped-style scooters are one of the most popular systems of micro-mobility. They are undoubtedly good for the city, as they promote forms of environmentally-friendly mobility, in which flexibility helps prevent traffic build-up in the urban centers where they operate. However, their increasing numbers are also generating conflicts as a result of the bad behavior of users, their unwarranted use in public spaces, and above all their parking. This paper proposes a methodology for finding parking spaces for shared motorcycle services using Geographic information system (GIS) location-allocation models and Global Positioning System (GPS) data. We used the center of Madrid and data from the company Muving (one of the city’s main operators) for our case study. As well as finding the location of parking spaces for motorbikes, our analysis examines how the varying distribution of demand over the course of the day affects the demand allocated to parking spaces. The results demonstrate how reserving a relatively small number of parking spaces for scooters makes it possible to capture over 70% of journeys in the catchment area. The daily variations in the distribution of demand slightly reduce the efficiency of the network of parking spaces in the morning and increase it at night, when demand is strongly focused on the most central areas.

Advances in the application of multi-body simulation technology to real world problems have led to an ever increasing demand for higher fidelity modeling techniques. Of these, accurate modeling of friction is of strategic interest in applications such as control system design, automotive suspension analysis, robotics etc. Joints (sometimes referred to as constraints) play an important role in defining the dynamics of a multi-body system. Hence, it is imperative to accurately account for friction forces arising at these joints due to the underlying interface dynamics. In this paper, we discuss the application of LuGre, a dynamic friction model to simulate joint friction. We choose the LuGre model due to its ability to capture important effects such as the Stribeck effect and the Dahl effect. The native 1-d LuGre model is extended to formulate friction computations for non-trivial joint geometries and dynamics in 2 and 3 dimensions. It is also extended to work in the quasi-static regime. Specific applications to revolute, cylindrical and spherical joints in multi-body systems are discussed. Finally, an engineering case study on the effects of joint friction in automotive suspension analysis is presented.

The objective of this article is to facilitate mobile teaching and learning by providing an alternative course material deployment method. This article suggests a course material deployment platform for small universities or individual instructors. Different from traditional course material deployment methods, the method discussed deploys course materials by using services provided by Android Market. After comparing the traditional course material deployment and the alternative deployment, the author presents strategies to take advantage of Android Market in delivering course materials to mobile devices. Through a case study, this article illustrates the application of these strategies in deploying a class menu for an object-oriented programming course in the computer science curriculum.


Objectives: The main aim of this study was to investigate the factors that influence students’, academicians’, clients’, as well as developer’s preferences in choosing their preferred approach in system development, namely structured analysis design (SAD) or object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD). Methods: The research design was based on a survey methodology and a case study. For the survey, questionnaires were administered to 30 students and 38 academicians, who were randomly selected from several Malaysian universities. For the case study, the requirements of the information system were modeled and presented to several clients to elicit their feedback. The survey data were analyzed using SPSS Findings: The result shows that students preferred the use of OOAD approach, which clearly outnumbered those who preferred the SAD approach, which stood at 33%. Interestingly, the majority (53%) of academicians preferred the use of a mixture of both approaches. Likewise, the clients shared a similar view with the academicians, whereas the developer preferred the OOAD approach. Application/Improvements: Clearly, the findings suggest that both approaches are essential, but the one that is widely used by developers and preferred by students is OOAD, and thus should be given priority when it comes to structured analysis and design. As such, curriculum designers and institutions of higher learning, particularly those offering system analysis and design and related courses, should make the necessary changes to the existing curriculum such that the academic programs offered will be able to produce highly competent and skilled analysts and designers as required by the industry.

Navigational service is one of the most essential dependency towards any transport system and at present, there are various revolutionary approaches that has contributed towards its improvement. This paper has reviewed the global positioning system (GPS) and computer vision based navigational system and found that there is a large gap between the actual demand of navigation and what currently exists. Therefore, the proposed study discusses about a novel framework of an autonomous navigation system that uses GPS as well as computer vision considering the case study of futuristic road traffic system. An analytical model is built up where the geo-referenced data from GPS is integrated with the signals captured from the visual sensors are considered to implement this concept. The simulated outcome of the study shows that proposed study offers enhanced accuracy as well as faster processing in contrast to existing approaches.
