How Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Should Bid for Spot Instances of Amazon's EC2 Cloud

In cloud service provisioning, spot instances are spare slots for which it has no pre-booking, unlike reserved or on-demand instances for which a cloud service provider (CSP) has a priori booking. CSPs like Amazon prefer spot instance approach to sell their “idle” computing resources as and when these idle slots appear. Though they price the spot instances dynamically depending on supply-demand status, usually the spots instances are relatively cheap. Hence, Amazon's spot instances are an attractive option for IT managers in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that normally have sporadic requirements for resources. However, SMEs have to win their desired spot instances through the auction mechanism conducted by Amazon. Since the IT manager always looks for finishing her job quickly within some specified budget, finding how to bid for spot instances in order to stay within its limited budget is a challenging task for her. She may continue to consume spot instances as long as her bid exceeds the current spot price. But, if she loses at any point, the unfinished task must be put on hold by some checkpointing mechanism so that the task may resume from the same point when she wins the spot next time. Using simulations for a very popular cloud, namely Amazon EC2, it has been found that, at a lower bid price, OPTIMAL checkpointing leads to a total cost higher than the total HOURLY checkpointing cost on a much higher bid value. Therefore, SMEs should go for higher bid prices when using OPTIMAL checkpointing and lower bid prices with HOURLY checkpointing. In the process, the author has observed some interesting correlation among checkpoint strategy, task reliability and completion time, which is reported here.

However, IT managers have to win spot instances via auctions conducted by CSPs. An SME continues to consume spot instances as long as its bid exceeds the current spot price. But, if it loses at any point in time, the unfinished task is to be put on hold by checkpoint mechanism. Optimizing both bid price and checkpoint overhead calls for strategic thinking on the part of the SME. This chapter dwells on this issue to help the IT managers of SMEs transform their business with cloud.

With the increase in the pace of globalization, SMEs are facing stiff competition from multinational firms. The entrepreneurs owning SMEs have fewer funds, but they need to improve the output of their organizations. Technology adoption can help owners of SMEs to match up with the pace of multinational firms because it can increase their reach and improve overall performance. In this paper, the authors will discuss whether online resource adoption (social media, e-commerce, technology 4.0) will enhance the marketing standard of small and medium enterprises or not. SMEs can achieve economies of scale because of the prominent usage of technology. The findings of this paper will help owners/managers of Indian SMEs to understand the use of online resources in improving marketing within a limited budget. COVID-19 has also pushed all the organizations towards the usage of technology. Either big or small organizations, none of them can ignore the use of technical sources for marketing in this digital era.

Abstract. The article considers the topical issue of intensifying the innovative activity of small and medium enterprises. In the course of the research, the structure of innovative activity of the enterprise was allocated to the subsystems: «Innovative activity», «Production and economic activity» and «State support and financial support». Scientific economic and mathematical methods such as a priori ranking, linguistic analysis, and cognitive modeling are used to identify and graphically represent the cause-and-effect relationships of the system. The a priori ranking allowed identifying indicators that from the point of view of scientists should be used in the analysis of subsystems. As a result, the causal links between the performance subsystems of small and medium-sized enterprises are identified and the indicators that have the greatest impact are identified. According to the simulation results, in order to intensify the innovation activity of small and medium enterprises, it is necessary to focus on the efficiency of the existing infrastructure of small and medium enterprises support, study the supply and demand in the market of business development services which will ensure compliance of services in the field of services for business development with the actual needs of small and medium enterprises. On the basis of the analysis of the received ratios of consonance, negative and positive influence it is possible to choose an acceptable strategy, for will promote increase of activation of innovative processes of small and average enterprises. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased insolvency risks, especially among small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are vastly overrepresented in hard-hit sectors. Without government intervention, even firms that are viable a priori could end up being liquidated—particularly in sectors characterized by labor-intensive technologies, threatening both macroeconomic and social stability. This staff discussion note assesses the impact of the pandemic on SME insolvency risks and policy options to address them. It quantifies the impact of weaker aggregate demand, changes in sectoral consumption patterns, and lockdowns on firm balance sheets and estimates the impact of a range of policy options, for a large sample of SMEs in (mostly) advanced economies.

One of these comers is small entrepreneurs with their market munchies enterprise (specially a traditional snack trader). This business is one of famous business in Yogyakarta, we will find rows of pavement vendors selling market munchies. The students and tourists are their main target customers. Market munchies enterprise is part of small and medium enterprises SMEs as livelihood activities. SMEs has an important role in economic growth of Indonesia. Therefore, it is very important to develop and strengthen the micro enterprise empowerment. Micro enterprise empowerment is one of strategy to reduce the poverty rate in Indonesia. Major challenger in implement this program are that micro entrepreneurs are conventional and have satisfied with their revenue. It is very important to develop a comprehensive and sustainable micro enterprise empowerment which consist of strengthen the quality of human resources, maximize the government’s roles, empower the enterprise capital and strengthen the partnership and autonomous. Micro enterprise autonomy will contribute to the economic and investment climate. Accounting information has an important role to achieve business success, as well as for small businesses.This research examines the effect of business experience and accounting information system used toward business success with age of business as control variable. The population of this research are small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in creative industries sector operated in Yogyakarta district. Based on purposive sampling method, total sample of this research is 200 SMEs. Statistical tool utilized to test the hypothesis in this study is path analysis using structural equation modelling (SEM). The test result shows that business experience and accounting information have positive and significant effect to the success of SMEs.

The law arrangement of franchise law was first explicitly regulated by the Government Regulation No. 16 of 1997 which is then updated by Government Regulation No. 42 of 2007 to be created in an agreement that at least contains clauses as stipulated by Article 5 of the Government Regulation. However, franchise arrangements also associated with a variety of other laws and regulations applicable in Indonesia. This article is going to state that the importance of partnerships with small and medium enterprises as an effort to encourage the involvement of the wider economic community.

The paper considers necessary conditions for acceleration of labor productivity growth in Russia. Based on micro data, as well as aggregate data, the paper quantifies the contribution of small and medium firms to labor productivity growth. It shows that mere increase of the number of small and medium enterprises is not as important for positive effects of these programs, as qualitative improvements: development of favorable environment for growth, which is largely determined by business climate. Accelerating productivity growth involves redistribution of labor and capital from inefficient to efficient enterprises. In particular, it is necessary to create conditions, which allow a firm to grow after it enters the market instead of stagnating as a small firm with low efficiency. At the same time, it is necessary for ineffective firms, which exhausted their growth potential, to have an opportunity to exit the market easily leaving resources including labor to fast-growing companies.
