Information visualization involves the visual, and sometimes interactive, presentation and organization of complex data in a clear, compelling representation. Information visualization is an essential element in peoples’ daily lives, especially those in data-driven professions, namely online educators. Although information visualization research and methods are prevalent in the diverse fields of healthcare, statistics, economics, information technology, computer science, and politics, few examples of successful information visualization design or integration exist in online learning. The authors provide a background of information visualization in education, explore a set of potential roles for information visualization in the future design and integration of online learning environments, provide examples of contemporary interactive visualizations in education, and discuss opportunities to move forward with design and research in this emerging area.

The use of peer feedback is a strategy for online educators to facilitate collaboration among students and increase critical reflection. Through the well-designed use of peer feedback, students can, with help from other students, master concepts and ideas that they cannot understand on their own (Lu & Bol, 2007; Vygotsky, 1978). The process of giving and receiving peer feedback closely resembles professional practice (van den Berg, Admiraal, & Pilot, 2006; van der Pol, van den Berg, Admiraal, & Simons, 2008) and helps students develop life-long skills. This case study describes the use of peer feedback in an online graduate practicum course to support students and increase their exposure to different educational environments. It includes suggestions for effectively using peer feedback in online courses.

Over the past few decades, substantial growth has occurred in online education in general, and this has been particularly true of the higher education sector. Most universities and post-secondary institutions now offer students the opportunity to enroll in online pre-tertiary, vocational, undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses. While some of these courses are successful for the learners who enroll in them, others have been found somewhat deficient, often criticized for their lack of humanization, interaction, communication and online presence. This chapter examines the role of the so-called soft skills of online course design and online teaching that are seen as vital for online educators who are responsible for the facilitation of high quality online learning. Along with a review of relevant literature about the soft skills of online teaching, the chapter presents three institutional case studies from which a set of practically-focused recommendations for promoting the design of humanized online learning environments has been developed.

Women constitute the majority of U.S. online learners, an environment that can cloak gender issues. Nevertheless, people bring their experiences and attitudes to the educational table, and gender remains a significant factor that online educators need to consider. This chapter focuses on the biological and social aspects of gendered learning and self-identity as they apply to online learning, particularly in Western societies. Gender-sensitive instructional design and technology incorporation strategies are provided to support gender-equitable engagement in online education.

Abstract Objective This study investigates the use of visualization techniques reported between 1996 and 2013 and evaluates innovative approaches to information visualization of electronic health record (EHR) data for knowledge discovery. Methods An electronic literature search was conducted May–July 2013 using MEDLINE and Web of Knowledge, supplemented by citation searching, gray literature searching, and reference list reviews. General search terms were used to assure a comprehensive document search. Results Beginning with 891 articles, the number of articles was reduced by eliminating 191 duplicates. A matrix was developed for categorizing all abstracts and to assist with determining those to be excluded for review. Eighteen articles were included in the final analysis. Discussion Several visualization techniques have been extensively researched. The most mature system is LifeLines and its applications as LifeLines2, EventFlow, and LifeFlow. Initially, research focused on records from a single patient and visualization of the complex data related to one patient. Since 2010, the techniques under investigation are for use with large numbers of patient records and events. Most are linear and allow interaction through scaling and zooming to resize. Color, density, and filter techniques are commonly used for visualization. Conclusions With the burgeoning increase in the amount of electronic healthcare data, the potential for knowledge discovery is significant if data are managed in innovative and effective ways. We identify challenges discovered by previous EHR visualization research, which will help researchers who seek to design and improve visualization techniques.

Abstract The geographical information system represents a branch of information technology that was developed along with the traditional business information technologies. It enables viewing of complex data in a graphical manner easy to understand, providing a more realistic view of the conditions which must be evaluated. The geographical information systems are used in various fields, like geography, geology and all the related fields, public administration, military activities, transportation and infrastructure administration, business, healthcare, social services or land properties management. In this paper we will emphasize how these systems can be used as a powerful information visualization tool in educational environment, taking into account that information visualization makes data easier to understand using direct sensory experience, especially the visual one.

Scientists across many fields are faced with the challenge of synthesizing and communicating information from large and complex data sets. The field of stock assessment is no exception as the volume and variety of the data has grown alongside the computational methods used to integrate them. While this growth in data and model complexity has improved many stock assessments, the process of communicating key results to colleagues and stakeholders in a meaningful way has become more daunting. The traditional approach of presenting information across a series of static slides often fails to convey the richness of information available, and as such, important patterns and details are easily overlooked. Here we contend that this problem can be mediated through the effective use of new open source tools for building interactive visualizations. These tools allow a broader audience to conduct detailed explorations of the results, leading to a deeper and collective understanding of both the data and models used to inform stock assessments. As a consequence, the peer review process is more open and accessible.

COVID-19 (short for coronavirus disease 2019) is an emerging infectious disease that has had a tremendous impact on our daily lives. Globally, there have been over 95 million cases of COVID-19 and 2 million deaths across 191 countries and regions. The rapid spread and severity of COVID-19 call for a monitoring dashboard that can be developed quickly in an adaptable manner. Wikidata is a free, collaborative knowledge graph, collecting structured data about various themes, including that of COVID-19. We present COVIWD, a COVID-19 Wikidata dashboard, which provides a one-stop information/visualization service for topics related to COVID-19, ranging from symptoms and risk factors to comparison of cases and deaths among countries. The dashboard is one of the first that leverages open knowledge graph technologies, namely, RDF (for data modeling) and SPARQL (for querying), to give a live, concise snapshot of the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of both RDF and SPARQL enables rapid and flexible application development. COVIWD is available at http://coviwd.org.

As participation in online learning grows, so do concerns around the ways in which students with disabilities are served in virtual school programs, both full and part-time. At the crux of this struggle is the way in which federal and state laws (many of which were incepted before online learning existed or gained traction as an educational option) are interpreted by educators and translated into policies at the school level. Further, administrators, special education case managers, and teachers all interpret school level policies and answer to directives from a hierarchy of supervisors. The interpretations of these policies and the understandings educators use to guide their thinking have not been well-researched. In the present study, teachers, special education case managers, school level special education administrators, and regional directors were interviewed about their roles in developing, supporting, and implementing accommodations and other forms of support for students with disabilities in online courses. Findings from this work focus on the role conceptions of various types of educators in virtual schools and the tensions they experience as they work to support each other in positioning students with disabilities for success.

The Russian state began to attach more and more importance to the legal customs that have existed among various ethnic groups since the beginning of the XIXth century, recognizing the right of peoples included in the orbit of Russian statehood to manage their own daily lives in accordance with traditional moral norms and legal practices. In Hungary, this practice and the significance of these studies have been examined in detail by the outstanding customary law researcher Kara Tagani. Conclusions of studies of legal custom in the Caucasus with the participation of Vs. F. Miller in 1878 also contributed to the study of the customary law of the Jász in Hungary. Miller’s rich research heritage received further study in the writings of the most prominent Hungarian historians. New research areas were also established based on the data from the studies conducted in the period 1939-1948. The aim of the historical, archival and ethnographic studies of the recent decades and the studies conducted by members of Ernø Tarkany-Sych (Legal Cultural-Historical and Legal Ethnographic Research Group) was a system of social norms that regulate the daily life of Hungarian Jász people. Our current ideas about the local Jász community (including administration, economy and family life), the rules of its coexistence, moral standards, punishments and the applied informal sanctions are now comparatively more thoroughly studied and differentiated. It is also obvious that the sense of freedom that exists in the autonomous local Jassy community is an essential element of social self-organization. One of the factors of this socio-psychological phenomenon can be considered the survivability of the traditional system of customary law, within which the consciousness of the Jassy communities has been formed and existed over the centuries, preserving its original identity.
