The Effects of Problem-Based Learning with Flipped Classroom on Elementary Students' Computing Skills

This study investigated, via quasi-experiments, the effects of problem-based learning with flipped classroom (FPBL) on the development of students' learning performance. In this study, 144 elementary school students were selected from six grade sections taking a course titled ‘Production of Ebook', and were assigned into the following three groups: FPBL group (n = 50), PBL group (n = 48), Control group (n = 46). The authors collected both quantitative and qualitative data, including interviews with students and teacher's journal. Based on the analysis in this study, it is found that the effect of FPBL on improving students' learning performance was significantly higher than other teaching methods investigated. This research provides an innovative design and illustration of PBL for teachers, educators, and schools which pay attention to enhancing students' learning performance.

This study investigated, via quasi-experiments, the effects of student-centered project-based learning with initiation (SPBL with Initiation) on the development of students' computing skills. In this study, 96 elementary school students were selected from four class sections taking a course titled “Digital Storytelling” and were assigned to the following four groups: SPBL with Initiation group (G1, n = 20), SPBL group (G2, n = 31), PBL group (G3, n = 24), and Traditional group (G4, n = 21). Students had to design digital materials for digital storytelling. The researchers collected both quantitative and qualitative data, including conducting interviews with students and using teachers' journals. Based on the analysis in this study, the effect of SPBL with Initiation on students' computing skills was significantly higher than for those without or with other treatments. This research provides an innovative design and illustration of SPBL with Initiation for teachers, educators, and schools that are keen to enhance students' computing skills.

This study aimed for using flipped classroom to develop scientific communication and the attitude towards technology acceptance in science learning among intermediate school students. For this purpose, the quasi-experimental design with the experimental and the control group method was used. The sample involved (49) third intermediate stage students from two different schools in Wadi Al-Dawasir Governorate, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. A list of written scientific communication levels suitable for intermediate school students and a procedural model for learning with flipped classes were presented. The study applied the scientific communication test and the technology acceptance in the science learning scale. The statistical analyses revealed that there were statistically significant differences between the means of the scores of the experimental and control group students in the scientific communication scale and the technology acceptance in the science learning scale in favor of the experimental group. Recommendations and suggestions were presented.


In view of the benefits of inquiry-based learning and knowledge management (KM) in triggering students’ communication and knowledge construction and the benefits of a flipped classroom in engaging student learning in- and out-of-classroom, this study proposed to integrate inquiry learning and KM into a flipped classroom to cultivate student web-programming learning performance in a higher education setting. Fifty-one university students participated in a web-programming course. The students in the experimental group used the proposed approach, while those in the control group used the conventional inquiry-based flipped classroom approach. The results indicated that integrating KM and inquiry-based approach into a flipped classroom can improve students’ programming skills and code comprehension and help them learn more effectively with better learning achievements.

ABSTRACT [The Effectiveness of Using a Model Problem-based Learning (PBL) to the Results of Physics Learning on High School Students 9 Lubuklinggau]. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of problem-based learning model. The research method used experiments with the form of Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The sample in this research is the students of class XI A and class XI B SMA N 9 Lubuklinggau City which amounted to 50 students. The  technique of collecting data in this research is a test. The test is in the form of pretest and finally test (posttest). The purpose of holding initial and final tests to determine the effectiveness of Physics learning with PBM model and conventional learning. The test instrument that was made before the test was tested was done by panelists test using Intracorelation class coefficient (ICC). Data analysis technique used in this research is t-test. The results showed that there are differences in student learning outcomes taught with Problem-Based Learning model (PBM) with students taught with conventional learning model. The difference can be seen in the result of t-test which yields t-count> t-table (3,98> 2.01). The effectiveness of using the PBM model in the experimental class is 13.5% better than in the control class. Keywords: Effectiveness; model; PBL; learning outcomes.

This study aims at examining the effect of environmental problem-based learning (PBL) on the environment-related vocabulary mastery and writing ability of Indonesian EFL students. Previous studies showed that problem-based learning is a student-centered learning approach that affects students’ learning positively and significantly. This study employed a quasi-experimental design by involving two classes of senior high school students, each consisted of 30 students. One class was assigned to be the experimental group and treated with environmental PBL, while the other class was assigned to be the control group and taught conventionally. A vocabulary test was used to measure the students’ environment-related vocabulary mastery, while a hortatory writing test was used to examine the students’ writing ability. The data were analyzed by using independent sample t-test. The results of the study showed that the students who were taught by using environmental PBL improved their environment-related vocabulary mastery and their writing ability significantly. The PBL approach is then recommended for future teaching and research. Nevertheless, before implementing this approach, other teachers and future researchers should consider the readiness of the curriculum, the students, and the school infrastructure.

In order for higher education to provide students with up-to-date knowledge and relevant skillsets for their continued learning, it needs to keep pace with innovative pedagogy and cognitive sciences to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. An adequate implementation of flipped learning, which can offer undergraduates education that is appropriate in a knowledge-based society, requires moving from traditional educational models to innovative pedagogy integrated with a playful learning environment (PLE) supported by information and communications technologies (ICTs). In this paper, based on the design-based research, a task-driven instructional approach in the flipped classroom (TDIAFC) was designed and implemented for two groups of participants in an undergraduate hands-on making course in a PLE. One group consisting of 81 students as the experimental group (EG) received flipped learning instruction, and another group of 79 students as the control group (CG) received lecture-centered instruction. The EG students experienced a three-round study, with results from the first round informing the customized design of the second round and the second round informing the third round. The experimental results demonstrated that students in the EG got higher scores of summative tests and final scores than those in the CG. In particular, students’ learning performance in three domains (i.e., cognitive, affective, and psychomotor) differ significantly between the two groups.

Despite the general agreement that the interdisciplinary model of physical education (PE), based on the incorporation of core academic subjects into the PE curriculum, stimulates the holistic development of students, there is still a lack of methods for its implementation. Therefore, Eduball was created, i.e., a method that uses educational balls with printed letters, numbers, and other signs. Numerous studies have shown that children participating in activities with Eduballs can develop their physical fitness while simultaneously improving their academic performance, particularly in math and language, including some writing skills. However, little is known about the effects of Eduball on children’s graphomotor skills, which are key for the academic performance of students throughout the entire schooling process. Here, we investigate whether 6-month participation in PE with Eduball stimulates graphomotor skills in primary school students, such as drawing prehandwriting letter patterns on unlined or lined paper and rewriting text on unlined or lined paper. Our results show that the Eduball class (N= 28) significantly improved these skills compared to the control class (N= 26) participating in traditional PE. For example, students from the experimental group wrote with a lower pen pressure and better stability of the line, in contrast to those from the control group. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the Eduball method successfully supports teachers in developing graphomotor skills in children. More broadly, our findings make clear once again that there is the need to integrate physical and cognitive development in education, which can be achieved by using an interdisciplinary model of PE.

This study aims to examine the effect of problem-based learning models on the activities of fourth grade elementary school students and analyze the effect of problem-based learning models on the analytical skills of fourth grade elementary school students. Implementation of problem-based learning models requires students to actively work together and analyze the problems being studied so that theoretically the application of this model affects the activities and ability of student analysis. This research is an experimental research design with pretest posttest control group design. The subjects of this study were fourth grade students at SDN Tawangsari 1 Sidoarjo. Data collection techniques through observation of student activity sheets and tests of student analysis skills. The analysis technique used is the t test. In this case the t test was carried out twice, first, to find out the initial conditions of the experimental group and the control group and second to find out the conditions after being treated. The results of the t test activity analysis and the students' analytical skills between the control class and the experimental class before being treated showed no significant difference (tcount 1.222 < ttable 2.011 and sig. 2 tailed value 0.233 > 0.05 student activity; tcount 0.164 < ttable 2.011 and the value of sig.2 tailed 0.871 > 0.05 analytical skills). While the results of the t test after being treated showed that there were significant differences between the experimental group and the control group (tcount 3.689 > ttable 2.011 and sig value 2 tailed 0.001 < 0.05 student activity; tcount 2.558 > ttable 2.011 and sig. 2 tailed value 0.015 < 0.05 analytical skills). In this study, treatment is the only differentiator between the experimental group and the control group, so it can be concluded that there is an effect of the application of problem-based learning models to the students' activity and analytical skills. For teachers who face the problem of low activity and analytical skills students are advised to use problem-based learning models.
