Research on AI has gained momentum in recent years. Many scholars and practitioners increasingly highlight the dark sides of AI, particularly related to algorithm bias. This study elucidates situations in which AI-enabled analytics systems make biased decisions against customers based on gender, race, religion, age, nationality or socioeconomic status. Based on a systematic literature review, this research proposes two approaches (i.e., a priori and post-hoc) to overcome such biases in customer management. As part of a priori approach, the findings suggest scientific, application, stakeholder and assurance consistencies. With regard to the post-hoc approach, the findings recommend six steps: bias identification, review of extant findings, selection of the right variables, responsible and ethical model development, data analysis and action on insights. Overall, this study contributes to the ethical and responsible use of AI applications.

Several aircraft types are commonly used to perform many search and rescue missions throughout the world. Aircraft have been used because they are able to offer a bird’s eye view of the surrounding search areas. In general, these aircraft come in various shapes, sizes and weights, and have myriad capabilities in carrying rescued and/or injured personnel and also equipment for the search and medical operations during the search and rescue sorties. For an aircraft, takeoff gross weight is important because it will affect the flying performance of the aircraft. To perform an effective search and rescue mission, the right selection of aircraft is essential such that unnecessary resources are not being wasted. In line with this notion, this study examines the distribution of the maximum takeoff gross weight of aircraft that have been typically used in search and rescue sorties. This knowledge will help in the design of future aircraft for such missions and also narrowing the selection of existing aircraft to be used on that kind of operations. It is found from the data analysis that most current operators have been using medium-haul aircraft that have a takeoff gross weight between 4,301 kg and 8,600 kg.

Managers who are responsible for the management of companies are faced with two important decisions - investment and funding. The right investment decisions and choice of funding sources are important because they affect the company's financial performance. The selection of the types of assets to be invested and the right types of financing sources result in optimal returns for the company. It reflects good company performance and future prospects. In addition, optimal return is a good sign for investors. Companies that perform well experience increase in the value of their firm. This study examined the effect of investment decisions and the selection of appropriate sources of funds on the performance of the company and the consequent impact on the firm value. The study was conducted in two parts. The first part examined the effect of investment decisions on long-term assets with long-term funding on the rate of return and firm value. The second part examined the effect of investment decisions on the company's short-term assets and funding for financial performance and firm value. The case study used in this research is a consumer goods sub-sector company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in the period 2010 to 2017. Path analysis is the data analysis tools that was used. The results of data analysis showed that the asset structure has an effect on financial performance and firm value. The capital structure affects the financial performance but does not affect the firm value of the company. Financial performance was measured by ROI.

AbstractWorkflow management systems represent, manage, and execute multi-step computational analyses and offer many benefits to bioinformaticians. They provide a common language for describing analysis workflows, contributing to reproducibility and to building libraries of reusable components. They can support both incremental build and re-entrancy – the ability to selectively re-execute parts of a workflow in the presence of additional inputs or changes in configuration and to resume execution from where a workflow previously stopped. Many workflow management systems enhance portability by supporting the use of containers, high-performance computing systems and clouds. Most importantly, workflow management systems allow bioinformaticians to delegate how their workflows are run to the workflow management system and its developers. This frees the bioinformaticians to focus on the content of these workflows, their data analyses, and their science.RiboViz is a package to extract biological insight from ribosome profiling data to help advance understanding of protein synthesis. At the heart of RiboViz is an analysis workflow, implemented in a Python script. To conform to best practices for scientific computing which recommend the use of build tools to automate workflows and to re-use code instead of rewriting it, the authors reimplemented this workflow within a workflow management system. To select a workflow management system, a rapid survey of available systems was undertaken, and candidates were shortlisted: Snakemake, cwltool and Toil (implementations of the Common Workflow Language) and Nextflow. An evaluation of each candidate, via rapid prototyping of a subset of the RiboViz workflow, was performed and Nextflow was chosen. The selection process took 10 person-days, a small cost for the assurance that Nextflow best satisfied the authors’ requirements. This use of rapid prototyping can offer a low-cost way of making a more informed selection of software to use within projects, rather than relying solely upon reviews and recommendations by others.Author summaryData analysis involves many steps, as data are wrangled, processed, and analysed using a succession of unrelated software packages. Running all the right steps, in the right order, with the right outputs in the right places is a major source of frustration. Workflow management systems require that each data analysis step be “wrapped” in a structured way, describing its inputs, parameters, and outputs. By writing these wrappers the scientist can focus on the meaning of each step, which is the interesting part. The system uses these wrappers to decide what steps to run and how to run these, and takes charge of running the steps, including reporting on errors. This makes it much easier to repeatedly run the analysis and to run it transparently upon different computers. To select a workflow management system, we surveyed available tools and selected three for “rapid prototype” implementations to evaluate their suitability for our project. We advocate this rapid prototyping as a low-cost (both time and effort) way of making an informed selection of a system for use within a project. We conclude that many similar multi-step data analysis workflows can be rewritten in a workflow management system.

AbstractSummaryModelling in Synthetic Biology constitutes a powerful tool in our continuous search for improved performance with rational Design-Build-Test-Learn approach. In particular, kinetic models unravel system dynamics, enabling system analysis for guiding experimental designs. However, a systematic yet modular pipeline that allows one to identify the “right” model and guide the experimental designs while tracing the entire model development and analysis is still lacking. Here, we introduce a unified python package, BMSS2, which offers the principal tools in model development and analysis—simulation, Bayesian parameter inference, global sensitivity analysis, with an emphasis on model selection, and a priori and a posteriori identifiability analysis. The whole package is database-driven to support interactive retrieving and storing of models for reusability. This allows ease of manipulation and deposition of models for the model selection and analysis process, thus enabling better utilization of models in guiding experimental designs.Availability and ImplementationThe python package and examples are available on https://github.com/EngBioNUS/BMSS2. A web page which allows users to browse and download the models (SBML format) in MBase is also available with the link provided on GitHub.Supplementary InformationSupplementary data is available.

Nowadays the process of information accumulation is so rapid that the concept of the usual iterative search requires revision. Being in the world of oversaturated information in order to comprehensively cover and analyze the problem under study, it is necessary to make high demands on the search methods. An innovative approach to search should flexibly take into account the large amount of already accumulated knowledge and a priori requirements for results. The results, in turn, should immediately provide a roadmap of the direction being studied with the possibility of as much detail as possible. The approach to search based on topic modeling, the so-called topic search, allows you to take into account all these requirements and thereby streamline the nature of working with information, increase the efficiency of knowledge production, avoid cognitive biases in the perception of information, which is important both on micro and macro level. In order to demonstrate an example of applying topic search, the article considers the task of analyzing an import substitution program based on patent data. The program includes plans for 22 industries and contains more than 1,500 products and technologies for the proposed import substitution. The use of patent search based on topic modeling allows to search immediately by the blocks of a priori information – terms of industrial plans for import substitution and at the output get a selection of relevant documents for each of the industries. This approach allows not only to provide a comprehensive picture of the effectiveness of the program as a whole, but also to visually obtain more detailed information about which groups of products and technologies have been patented.

Abstract The failure analysis community working on highly integrated mixed signal circuitry is entering an era where simultaneously System-On-Chip technologies, denser metallization schemes, on-chip dissipation techniques and intelligent packages are being introduced. These innovations bring a great deal of defect accessibility challenges to the failure analyst. To contend in this era while aiming for higher efficiency and effectiveness, the failure analysis environment must undergo a disruptive evolution. The success or failure of an analysis will be determined by the careful selection of tools, data and techniques in the applied analysis flow. A comprehensive approach is required where hardware, software, data analysis, traditional FA techniques and expertise are complementary combined [1]. This document demonstrates this through the incorporation of advanced scan diagnosis methods in the overall analysis flow for digital functionality failures and supporting the enhanced failure analysis methodology. For the testing and diagnosis of the presented cases, compact but powerful scan test FA Lab hardware with its diagnosis software was used [2]. It can therefore easily be combined with the traditional FA techniques to provide stimulus for dynamic fault localizations [3]. The system combines scan chain information, failure data and layout information into one viewing environment which provides real analysis power for the failure analyst. Comprehensive data analysis is performed to identify failing cells/nets, provide a better overview of the failure and the interactions to isolate the fault further to a smaller area, or to analyze subtle behavior patterns to find and rationalize possible faults that are otherwise not detected. Three sample cases will be discussed in this document to demonstrate specific strengths and advantages of this enhanced FA methodology.
