Templates for the Development of Business Technology Strategies

At Villanova University, there are several courses that focus on the role that technology plays in business. At the graduate level, it is required that students develop business technology strategies for their companies. This task is placed in context of the best practices around the development of business technology strategies. Part of the learning process is for students to understand all of the components of a useful strategy. In this regard, the author has developed templates that help students organize and develop their strategies. The templates form the basis for both the “theory” and “practice” of business technology strategy, and are presented in this paper to provide a framework for understanding the strategy development process and a lens through which the strategies in this special issue can be assessed.

The field of learning analytics (LA) draws heavily on theory and practice from a range of diverse academic disciplines. In so doing, LA research embodies a rich integration of methodologies and practices, assumptions and theory to bring new insights into the learning process. Reflecting this rich diversity, the theme of LAK 2016 highlights the multidisciplinary nature of the field and embraces the convergence of these disciplines to provide theoretical and practical insights to challenge current thinking in the field.  This overview introduces six articles, each of which expands on an invited talk or paper from the conference, with the added goal of offering a small taste of the rich experience that comes from  active participation in the conference.

This paper focuses on the development of a business technology strategy for a large global specialty chemicals company. The requirement was to develop a strategy that aligned with the company’s business strategy, which is not an uncommon requirement for business technology strategies in the 21st century. The expectation was that information technology (IT) would cross the operation-to-strategic chasm and start to generate some significant ROI. The paper explores the elements of the “strategic strategy” (versus an “operational strategy”) as well as ongoing challenges to make both operational and strategic technology work. The authors illustrate a number of strategy development principles that students should internalize as they assess other cases and develop their own business technology strategies.

Цель статьи – познакомить читателя с теорией и практикой применения конкретных дидактических методов в контексте различных проблемных ситуаций как интерактивных форм обучения и их ролью в процессе интеграции мигрантов в Болгарии. Использование интерактивных методов помогает интенсифицировать коммуникацию между учащимися. Вовлекаются все участники образовательного процесса, никто не остается пассивным наблюдателем. Сами формулировки заданий требуют предельной концентрации, активизируют память, эмпатию, личное участие в решении поставленной задачи и взаимодействие участников. Интеграция мигрантов посредством образовательных инноваций – лучший путь организации их нормальной жизни в болгарском обществе. Конкретные примеры дают возможность применить передовой опыт на практике. The purpose of the article is to introduce the reader to the theory and practice of applying specific didactic methods in the context of various problem situations as interactive forms of learning and their role in the integration of migrants in Bulgaria. Interactive techniques help to intensify the communication between students. All participants of the educational process are involved, no one remains a passive observer. The form of tasks requires laser-sharp focus, activates memory, empathy, personal participation in solving the task and interaction between participants. Integration of migrants through educational innovations is the best way to organize their normal life in Bulgarian society. Actual examples provide an opportunity to apply best practices.

Recent advances in the availability of ever larger and more varied electronic datasets, both historical and modern, provide unprecedented opportunities for corpus linguistics and the digital humanities. However, combining unstructured text with images, video, audio as well as structured metadata poses a variety of challenges to corpus compilers. This paper presents an overview of the topic to contextualise this special issue of Research in Corpus Linguistics. The aim of the special issue is to highlight some of the challenges faced and solutions developed in several recent and ongoing corpus projects. Rather than providing overall descriptions of corpora, each contributor discusses specific challenges they faced in the corpus development process, summarised in this paper. We hope that the special issue will benefit future corpus projects by providing solutions to common problems and by paving the way for new best practices for the compilation and development of rich-data corpora. We also hope that this collection of articles will help keep the conversation going on the theoretical and methodological challenges of corpus compilation.

This editorial outlines our perspective on the state of literature as well as suggestions for new contributions to entrepreneurship research in the area of crowd-funded opportunities. Our aim is, first, to outline what we see as best practices for research on crowd-funded entrepreneurial opportunities. Second, we aim to solicit additional articles for the Virtual Special Issue (VSI) on “Crowd-Funded Entrepreneurial Opportunities” in Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. In contrast to typical editorial articles associated with special issues, we take a prospective approach and outline what we hope (and expect) to see in the literature in the future. Put differently, we are not going to summarize a subset of articles that have been accepted for publication—rather, we are going to delineate the subset of articles to be written that we would, ideally, like to see submitted to top-tier entrepreneurship journals in order to advance the literature. Along the way, we will describe best practices that we anticipate can elevate research in this burgeoning area of inquiry.

This article introduces the special issue from SoLAR’s Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference. Learning analytics is an emerging field incorporating theory and practice from numerous disciplines to investigate how learner interactions in digital environments can provide actionable data about the learning process. As the field continues to expand there is a timely opportunity to evaluate its ongoing maturation. This evaluation could be in part informed by regular scientometric analyses from both the Journal and Conference publications. These analyses can collectively provide insight into the development of learning analytics more broadly and assist with the allocation of resources to under-represented areas for example.

: The use of learning media is one of the critical success factors in higher education, therefore an educator must have innovation to use of learning media. The purpose of this research is to develop learning media based on the Inspiring Suit 8 on arbitration material courses of theoretical and practice for Volleyball 1 academic year 2018/2019 at IKIP Budi Utomo Malang. The existence of media will be a big successful support in learning process, so that students do not feel boredom because of the weaknesses of the lecturers, in which they are unable to provided good learning variation or even have difficulty in conveying or transferring knowledge. The research was descriptive qualitative design. The research subjects were students of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation Study Program who took volleyball theory and practice courses in the even semester academic year 2018/2019. The instruments used were the media expert review questionnaire, the learning expert questionnaire, and the trial analysis questionnaire. The questionnaire will be analyzed to see the feasibility of the developed media. Based on the data results review by media expert volleyball, media learning expert and field trials, it can be concluded that media developed is useful in learning process. In addition, it is used to provide independent motivation, which can be used in lesson for students.

There are many roles that design can play in organisations. It can be source of good marketing strategy, and designer by himself can be a promotional tool for a company. Thanks to those actions companies can gain publicity, media attention and good PR.On the second level, design can be perceived as ‘process of making things better’. In this case companies can achieve more effective product development process, new tools and technologies.On the third level we have the situation when designer work alongside with company managers with the whole business concept. At this level, designers’ work looks more like a brand consultant, a strategist. In this approach design should be reflecting certain brand name and brand values.As our study presented, Swedish companies operate on those two, higher levels, while Polish still limit the scope of design. We strongly believe, that Polish companies, as they gain more experience with design activities, will be more likely to perceive design in this more mature approach. In the meantime, presenting best practices from companies from other, more mature countries could be a good way of promoting design as a strategic asset rather than promotional tool. We believe that in order to fasten this process, Polish companies should as follows:1. Work more often with external and foreign designers;2. Expand the area of designer responsibilities in companies;3. Place the responsibility for design in hands of professional design managers.

In this introduction, we first review the lessons learned in development economics about the ability of randomized control trials to analyse what Duflo refers to as the “plumbing problems” of policy implementation, as opposed to “engineering problems” of policy design. We then examine the papers published within this special issue from a plumbing-based perspective to highlight the benefits of the co-creation of knowledge in corporate sustainability through a field-based experimental agenda. We finally propose that field-based experiments can radically influence the future development of our (and related) fields of inquiry in three ways: (1) focusing on the implementation processes of sustainability strategies, (2) shifting attention from the analysis of past events to the design of future actions, and (3) yielding our role as sole owners of the knowledge development process and agreeing to shared ownership with the organizations we study.
