The aim of this study was to verify if a growth reduction of yellow passion fruit seedlings’ growth morphophysiology and quality could be changed by paclobutrazol applied through seedling immersion. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, with seedlings grown in polyethylene tubes (290 cm3), with substrate. At 40 days after sowing, the seedlings were immersed in an aqueous solution of paclobutrazol at concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mg L-1. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with five treatments (paclobutrazol concentrations) and four replicates. At 15 and 30 days after treatment, growth characteristics were evaluated. At the end of the assay, destructive evaluations related to mass determination, total leaf area, and seedling quality index were performed. Paclobutrazol treatment induced restrictions in seedling growth, except for fresh and dry mass of root and total fresh mass. Based on these characteristics, the increase in values induced by paclobutrazol was verified. The seedling quality, defined by the major value of the Dickson quality index and a smaller robustness index, was higher when submitted to paclobutrazol treatment.

AbstractQuality of copaiba seedlings produced in two volumes of substrates and shading levels. Abstract The use of advanced seedlings associated with the annual cultivation of passion fruit are important management techniques for living with the fruit-hardening virus (FEV). However, this technology still needs information on nitrogen fertilization and spacing between plants, so that it is possible to recover crop’s productivity. The objective of this research was to identify the nitrogen dose (N) and the most suitable spacing for annual orchards installed with advanced seedlings (1.2 m high) of yellow passion fruit. The experiment was carried out in the field, in Mogi Mirim, SP, between October 2017 and July 2018. A randomized block design was used in subdivided plots; the treatments were doses of N in coverage such as 0, 60, 120, 180 and 240 kg ha-1 and spacing between plants of 2.0 and 4.0 m and 3.0 m between lines. The dose found for maximum production, 15.4 kg of fruit pl-1, and adequate physical-chemical quality of the fruit for the yellow passion fruit was 130.7 kg ha-1 of N. The most densified spacing, of 2 x 3 m, provided greater productivity and number of thousand fruits per hectare, respectively, 20.7 t ha-1 and 139.5 thousand fruits ha-1.

ABSTRACT Yellow passion fruit is a fruit species widely cultivated throughout the Brazilian semi-arid territory, but its yield is affected by the quality of the waters of this region. In this context, the objective was to evaluate the gas exchange and production of passion fruit cv. BRS Rubi do Cerrado irrigated with waters of different cationic natures. The study was conducted in drainage lysimeters under greenhouse conditions in Campina Grande, PB, Brazil, in a randomized block design, and the treatments were eight cationic natures of irrigation water (S1 - Control; S2 - Na+; S3 - Ca2+; S4 - Mg2+; S5 - Na+ + Ca2+; S6 - Na+ + Mg2+; S7 - Ca2+ + Mg2+ and S8 - Na+ + Ca2+ + Mg2+) with three replicates. Plants in the control treatment were irrigated with water of low electrical conductivity (ECw = 0.4 dS m-1), while those of the other treatments were irrigated using water with ECw of 3.5 dS m-1. The treatments Na+ + Ca2+, Na+ + Mg2+ and Ca2+ + Mg2+ were prepared in the equivalent ratio of 1:1, and Na++Ca2++Mg2+ in the ratio 7:2:1, respectively. Water salinity of 3.5 dS m-1 reduced gas exchange, and stomatal conductance and transpiration were the most sensitive variables of passion fruit. The number of fruits of passion fruit cv. BRS Rubi do Cerrado decreased with water salinity, regardless of the cationic nature. The waters of calcic and calcic+magnesian nature caused the greatest deleterious effects on the production variables of passion fruit, at 259 days after transplanting.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to describe histological traits of the graft welding process and evaluate the effect of rootstocks on the physical and chemical traits and the productivity of sour passion fruit populations. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design, in a 4x2 + 4 factorial scheme (cultivars / canopy x rootstocks), three replicates and nine plants per plot. Commercial cultivars and populations and Passiflora alata and P. nitida rootstocks, in addition to ungrafted plants were used as canopy. Cleft grafting was the grafting type adopted. Traits analyzed such as productivity and physical and chemical quality of fruits were submitted to analysis of variance and compared by the Tukey test. The canopy morphology was evaluated according to descriptors of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. Grafting was carried out for each graft/rootstock combination for histological analysis. Sections were obtained by freehand cuts, stained and mounted on semi-permanent slides, examined under optical microscope and photomicrographed. Rootstocks affected the early cultivation and reduced productivity and number of fruits of passion fruit populations. Grafting did not affect the quality of fruits or the canopy morphology. Considering the complete culture cycle, P. alata species is able to be used as rootstock. The anatomical study demonstrates the occurrence of better compatibility in the connection of P. edulis tissues on P. alata, compared to grafting on P. nitida.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a molecule that can flag plants under biotic and abiotic stress conditions. Among the kinds of stress, the salinity stress is the one that most usually affects plants. Consequently, the purpose hereof was to use hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to mitigate the possible harmful effects of salinity in yellow passion fruit seedlings. We employed a randomized block design, in a 5 × 3 factorial scheme, corresponding to five irrigation water electric conductivity levels (0.3; 1.3; 2.3; 3.3; and 4.3 dS m-1) and three hydrogen peroxide concentrations (0; 5; and 15 μmol L-1), with four repetitions. The treatments were applied foliarly 7 and 15 days after the seedlings’ germination with hand sprayers. Sixty days after sowing, we evaluated the seedlings’ growth and quality variables, which finally proved that hydrogen peroxide mitigates the harmful effect of the irrigation water’s salinity up to 2 dS m-1 in the growth of yellow passion fruit seedlings at the concentration of 5 μmol/L. Nonetheless, excessive concentrations (15 μmol L-1) associated with high salt concentrations were proven detrimental to the seedlings’ phenological growth and quality.

Abstract: Some desiccation techniques for harvesting wheat may affect seed quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different desiccant herbicides applied to the wheat crop and their effects on the production and seed quality. The experiment was conducted with cultivar COODETEC 150 (CD 150) in two sites in Palotina (Paraná state, Brazil) with a randomized block design consisting of 7 treatments (desiccation herbicides) and 4 replications. Desiccation was realized when 50% of the plants were in stage 80 with seeds in powdery or mass consistency. The variables analyzed were percentage of moisture content after harvest, Yield, hectoliter weight, mass of 100 seeds, vigor, germination, fresh mass of seedlings, dry mass of seedlings and root length. The herbicides carfentrazone-ethyl and clethodim were the ones that promoted greatest reduction in vigor. The herbicide paraquat caused reduction in seedling length. There was a reduction in the mass of 100 seeds for glufosinate-ammonium, clethodim, diquat and carfentrazone-ethyl. Glufosinate-ammonium, paraquat, glyphosate, clethodim and diquat caused reduction in yield. Desiccation of Cultivar CD 150 at stage 80 is not recommended, since plant Yield and physiological seed parameters were adversely affected by herbicides.

The production of good quality passion fruit seedlings depends on substrates with adequate physical and chemical characteristics. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of doses of ash from burning of sugarcane bagasse on improvement of traits of the substrate "gully soil". The experiment was set up in a greenhouse and arranged in randomized block design, in a 2x7x2 factorial scheme. The following factors and their respective levels were studied: (i) soil structure,- aggregating between 4 and 10 mm and <2 mm; (ii) ash doses - 0; 1.5; 3; 6; 12; 24; and 48 t ha-1; (iii) families of passion fruit - F29 and F48. The use of ash combined to the soil with structure <2mm significantly increased the production of shoot fresh mass and shoot dry mass for both families studied. The density of the substrate obtained by the mixture of ash and gully soil (soil) decreased as ash doses increased, regardless of the size of the aggregates and the family studied.

The yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Degener) crops have been gaining notoriety in Brazil, whose cultivation extends to almost all regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of yellow passion fruit seedlings in response to the interaction between substrate composition and irrigation water salinity levels. The experimental trial was installed in a randomized block design, with a factorial scheme (3x6) consisting of two factors: three levels of salinity and six types of substrates, distributed in four replications, each plot consisting of a polyethylene bag composed of two plants. The factor levels of salinity, electrical conductivity: 0.3, 1.2 and 2.1 dSm-1 did not influence the physiological growth and development of the seedlings, the substrates resulted in statistically significant effects, the cattle manure presented the highest percentage in levels of physiological growth and development of the plant.

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) is considered one of the most important cereals, such as maize, rice and wheat, due to its multiplicity of usage, as much for human consumption as for feed. The Nitrogen is one of the main nutrients that influences the quality and productivity of barley seeds because it participates in numerous metabolic routes. It is a limiting factor of the production, the lack or the excess can bring consequence to the culture. In this manner, the present study aims to evaluate the influence of different nitrogen doses on the physiologic quality and biochemical characters of brewing barley seeds produced in two growing environments. The experiment was conducted in the 2017 crop season, in a randomized block design, organized in a factorial scheme, being 2 cultivation environment × 2 brewing barley cultivars × 4 nitrogen doses, disposed in four replicates. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated by germination, first counting of germination, accelerated aging, field emergence, shoot and root length, dry mass of shoot and root of seedlings, electrical conductivity (3, 6 and 24 hours) and isoenzymes. The growing environment promotes differences in the barley seeds physiologic quality. The nitrogen fertilizing, at dose of 120 kg ha-1, results in superiority in the physiologic quality of seeds. The cultivar BRS Cauê in both environments presented higher vigor. The nitrogen fertilizing alters the isoenzymatic expression of barley seedlings, creating variation in the bands intensity, at different nitrogen doses.
