Repetitive impact during highway and railway transportation has potential and severe harm for the product with fragile or damageable component. The radiogram belongs to a typical electronic product with panel and box structure, and occurs with the falling down of loudspeaker contacted on the top box, the failure of electronic components, and the fracture of outside box during transportation and storage. So the main feature of this article is the analysis on the natural vibration property, and the evaluation on the drop shock property including amplification factor and relevant curves under nine kinds of repetitive impact with different impact duration and drop height. The results show that the amplification factor markedly rise while the impact duration 2.02ms (nearly causing the resonance of radiogram), the repetitive drop shock may bring more serious damage than single impact load, so the case should be paid attention for the design of package cushioning.

The Indonesian railway transportation has adventages in term of capacity, efficiency, trafic, and safety compared to the other types of land transportations. At present, the Indonesian Railway Company has 519 locomotives, and 1643 passenger cars, that transport about 184 million man-trip each year[1,2]. Unfortunately, the rate of train collisions in Indonesian railway system was very high. In the last ten years, 2352 train accidents have happened which claimed 997 lives and left 2638 people injured. The record shows that 110 of those accidents were train to train collisions[1]. This paper consider the structural impact behavior of Indonesian passenger railway car subject to collision forces. This characteristic is very important parameter for passenger protection during the course of collision[3-5]. The vehicle structure should be able to absorb the huge impact energy or impact force to ensure the passenger safety[6-9]. The impact energy of cars-train is evaluated using the principle of multibody dynamics[10,11]. The vehicle structure under impact load is analyzed using the finite element method. The principal of symmetry is adopted, so the collision scene could be simulated as collision between the vehicle with a rigid wall. The analysis result shows that the structure is collapse at the passenger area (saloon) which is in agreement with the real collision. Modification is proposed to protect the passenger area by introducing crush zone area and impact energy absorber.

The motivation of this research is that the ship deck is subjected to uni-axial compression under sagging condition, when in the severe condition, the deck is dynamically loaded in nature, with impact type loads, which is the reason of deck collapse under severe condition. In addition, imperfection probably substantially influences the dynamic response of the impacted deck. Based on nonlinear explicit finite element method, the paper aims at studying the influence of three types of initial geometric imperfection on dynamic response of cross-stiffened deck subjected to in-plane impact. Three types of imperfection are local imperfection on deck plate between stiffeners, imperfection of overall positive deflection of the deck, and imperfection of overall negative deflection of the deck. Impact function is a half sine wave function with two parameters, impact duration and amplitude of the impact load. First order natural vibration period of the deck is selected as impact duration. Amplitude of the impact load is selected according to the value of ultimate strength of the deck, and varied by times of the ultimate strength. Strain rate effect and Strain hardening effect of the material are accounted in the analysis. Axial residual displacement of the end of the deck after impact is selected as dynamic response of the deck. The result shows that dynamic response of deck is sensitive to local imperfection, while not sensitive to overall imperfection under low or moderate level of imperfection magnitude. When imperfection is severe, residual axial displacement of the end of the deck is large, especially amplitude of impact load is somewhat larger than ultimate strength. Among 3 kinds of imperfection, dynamic response of overall negative deflection imperfection is the largest, followed by that of local imperfection, while that of overall positive deflection imperfection is the least.

Rotating scanning motor is the important component of synchronous scanning laser fuze. High emission overload environment in the conventional ammunition has a serious impact on the reliability of the motor. Based on the theory that the buffer pad can attenuate the impact stress wave, a new motor buffering Isolation Method is proposed. The dynamical model of the new buffering isolation structure is established by ANSYS infinite element analysis software to do the nonlinear impact dynamics simulation of rotating scanning motor. The effectiveness of Buffering Isolation using different materials is comparatively analyzed. Finally, the Macht hammer impact experiment is done, the results show that in the experience of the 70,000[Formula: see text]g impact acceleration, the new buffering Isolation method can reduce the impact load about 15 times, which can effectively alleviate the plastic deformation of rotational scanning motor and improve the reliability of synchronization scanning system. A new method and theoretical basis of anti-high overload research for Laser Fuze is presented.

Oleo-pneumatic landing gear is a complex mechanical system conceived to efficiently absorb and dissipate an aircraft’s kinetic energy at touchdown, thus reducing the impact load and acceleration transmitted to the airframe. Due to its significant influence on ground loads, this system is generally designed in parallel with the main structural components of the aircraft, such as the fuselage and wings. Robust numerical models for simulating landing gear impact dynamics are essential from the preliminary design stage in order to properly assess aircraft configuration and structural arrangements. Finite element (FE) analysis is a viable solution for supporting the design. However, regarding the oleo-pneumatic struts, FE-based simulation may become unpractical, since detailed models are required to obtain reliable results. Moreover, FE models could not be very versatile for accommodating the many design updates that usually occur at the beginning of the landing gear project or during the layout optimization process. In this work, a numerical method for simulating oleo-pneumatic landing gear drop dynamics is presented. To effectively support both the preliminary and advanced design of landing gear units, the proposed simulation approach rationally balances the level of sophistication of the adopted model with the need for accurate results. Although based on a formulation assuming only four state variables for the description of landing gear dynamics, the approach successfully accounts for all the relevant forces that arise during the drop and their influence on landing gear motion. A set of intercommunicating routines was implemented in MATLAB® environment to integrate the dynamic impact equations, starting from user-defined initial conditions and general parameters related to the geometric and structural configuration of the landing gear. The tool was then used to simulate a drop test of a reference landing gear, and the obtained results were successfully validated against available experimental data.

For 30 years, forage ryegrass breeding has known that the germplasm may contain a maternally inherited symbiotic Epichloë endophyte. These endophytes produce a suite of secondary alkaloid compounds, dependent upon strain. Many produce ergot and other alkaloids, which are associated with both insect deterrence and livestock health issues. The levels of alkaloids and other endophyte characteristics are influenced by strain, host germplasm, and environmental conditions. Some strains in the right host germplasm can confer an advantage over biotic and abiotic stressors, thus acting as a maternally inherited desirable ‘trait’. Through seed production, these mutualistic endophytes do not transmit into 100% of the crop seed and are less vigorous than the grass seed itself. This causes stability and longevity issues for seed production and storage should the ‘trait’ be desired in the germplasm. This makes understanding the precise nature of the relationship vitally important to the plant breeder. These Epichloë endophytes cannot be ‘bred’ in the conventional sense, as they are asexual. Instead, the breeder may modulate endophyte characteristics through selection of host germplasm, a sort of breeding by proxy. This article explores, from a forage seed company perspective, the issues that endophyte characteristics and breeding them by proxy have on ryegrass breeding, and outlines the methods used to assess the ‘trait’, and the application of these through the breeding, production, and deployment processes. Finally, this article investigates opportunities for enhancing the utilisation of alkaloid-producing endophytes within pastures, with a focus on balancing alkaloid levels to further enhance pest deterrence and improving livestock outcomes.

To study the load transfer characteristics of a two-legged shield powered support, a numerical simulation model of the support was established using the multibody dynamics software ADAMS. The model took full account of the hydraulic-elastic deformation characteristics of the support, as a series spring-damper system was used to replace the leg and the equilibrium jack. The canopy, goaf shield, lemniscate bars, and equilibrium jack are equivalent to flexible bodies. The setting force of the leg was provided by the preload of the equivalent spring, the static roof load was simulated using a slope signal, and the impact load was simulated using a step signal. Using the model, the impact and excitation effects of each hinge joint of the support were analyzed under different impact load conditions across the canopy. The results show that the location of the impact load affects the force transmissions of all hinge points of the support. Both the impact effect and the excitation effect are at a minimum when the impact force is located near the leg action line. These results are useful for the adaptive control and structural design optimization of the support.

Abstract The advance speed of a longwall face is an essential factor affecting the mining pressure and overburden movement, and an effective approach for choosing a reasonable advance speed to realise coal mine safety and efficient production is needed. To clarify the influence of advance speed on the overburden movement law of a fully mechanised longwall face, a time-space subsidence model of overburden movement is established by the continuous medium analysis method. The movement law of overburden in terms of the advance speed is obtained, and mining stress characteristics at different advance speeds are reasonably explained. The theoretical results of this model are further verified by a physical simulation experiment. The results support the following conclusions. (i) With increasing advance speed of the longwall face, the first (periodic) rupture interval of the main roof and the key stratum increase, while the subsidence of the roof, the fracture angle and the rotation angle of the roof decrease. (ii) With increasing advance speed, the roof displacement range decreases gradually, and the influence range of the advance speed on the roof subsidence is 75 m behind the longwall face. (iii) An increase in the advance speed of the longwall face from 4.89 to 15.23 m/d (daily advancing of the longwall face) results in a 3.28% increase in the impact load caused by the sliding instability of the fractured rock of the main roof and a 5.79% decrease in the additional load caused by the rotation of the main roof, ultimately resulting in a 9.63% increase in the average dynamic load coefficient of the support. The roof subsidence model based on advance speed is proposed to provide theoretical support for rational mining design and mining-pressure-control early warning for a fully mechanised longwall face.

Harnessing renewable energy sources (RES) using hybrid systems for buildings is almost a deontological obligation for engineers and researchers in the energy field, and increasing the percentage of renewables within the energy mix represents an important target. In crowded urban areas, on-site energy production and storage from renewables can be a real challenge from a technical point of view. The main objectives of this paper are quantification of the impact of the consumer’s profile on overall energy efficiency for on-site storage and final use of solar thermal energy, as well as developing a multicriteria assessment in order to provide a methodology for selection in prioritizing investments. Buildings with various consumption profiles lead to achieving different values of performance indicators in similar configurations of storage and energy supply. In this regard, an analysis of the consumption profile’s impact on overall energy efficiency, achieved in the case of on-site generation and storage of solar thermal energy, was performed. The obtained results validate the following conclusion: On-site integration of solar systems allowed the consumers to use RES at the desired coverage rates, while restricted by on-site available mounting areas for solar fields and thermal storage, under conditions of high energy efficiencies. In order to segregate the results and support optimal selection, a multicriteria analysis was carried out, having as the main criteria the energy efficiency indicators achieved by hybrid heating systems.

John Bischoff has been part of the formation and growth of electronic and computer music in the San Francisco Bay Area for over three decades. In an interview with the author, he describes his early development as a student of experimental music technology, including the impact of hearing and assisting in the work of David Tudor. Bischoff, like Tudor, explored the unpredictable potentials within electronic components, and he brought this curiosity to bear when he began working on one of the first available micro-computers. He was a key individual at the historical turning point when computer music escaped its institutional restric-tions and began becoming widespread.
