A magneto-rheological (MR) fan clutch is a device that transmits torque by the shear stress of the MR fluids. In this paper, Bingham model is used to describe the constitutive characteristics of MR fluids subject to an applied magnetic field. The operational principle of the MR clutch is introduced. The torque transmitted by MR fluids is analyzed to compute the torque transmission ability in the MR clutch. The results show that with the increase of the applied magnetic field, the torque developed by MR fluids goes up rapidly.

A magneto-rheological (MR) fan clutch is a device that transmits torque by the shear stress of the MR fluids. In this paper, the torque transmitted by MR fluids is analyzed to compute the torque transmission ability in the disk-type MR fan clutch. The results show that with the increase of the applied magnetic field, the torque developed by MR fluids goes up rapidly. The driven speed of the fan clutch can be adjusted continuously by changing the applied magnetic field.

With the purpose of studying the main influence on the cylinder-typed magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) clutch, the relationship between the output of shear stress and its affecting factors is presented in this paper; through theoretical derivation from the Bingham Model and the cylinder-typed shear model, the stress born by the MRF in the clutch is analysed, and the affecting factors on the clutch is also simulated and verified through experiments. The study shows that as the magnetic field strengthens, the shear stress of the cylinder-typed MRF clutch grows linearly, with proportionality constant at 0.162; the increase of shear rate, relevant to the magnetic field strength, makes little difference to the torque output, with proportionality constant at 0.00026B. The results indicate that mechanical-electrical integration of clutch devices can be achieved through the control of magnetic field output of the electromagnet.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are materials that respond to an applied magnetic field with the change of their yield and rheological behaviors. In this paper, the yield and rheological behaviors of MR fluids are discussed. Based on the microstructure of magnetic chain a theoretical model is developed to analyze the effect of an applied magnetic field on the yield stress of MR fluids. Bingham model is used to describe the rheological behaviors of MR fluids subject to an applied magnetic field. The results show that altering the strength of an applied field can control the yield stress of MR fluids. The shear stress increases as the strength of an applied magnetic field increases, and it hardly changes with the increase of shear strain rate. MR fluids exhibit Bingham plastic model.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are suspensions of micron sized ferromagnetic particles dispersed in varying proportions of a variety of non-ferromagnetic fluids. MR fluids exhibit rapid, reversible and significant changes in their rheological (mechanical) properties while subjected to an external magnetic field. In this paper, a double-plate magneto-rheological fluid (MRF) clutch with controllable torque output have been designed. Electromagnetic finite element analysis is used to optimize the design of the clutch by using the commercial FEA software ANSYS.

Abstract In this research work, graphite flake has been used as an additive in magnetorheological (MR) fluid to improve its thermal and tribological performance. MR fluids with varying amounts of graphite flakes (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt%) are prepared to show effective thermal and tribological performance. A test rig is developed with a DC motor, torque sensor, and MR clutch operated in a shear mode to test the torque transmission. Results show the lubrication effects of graphite flakes in MR fluid. Torque transmission is improved in on-state and off-state using graphite flakes based MR fluid as compared to conventional MR fluid. Heating of MR clutch is also reduced with the graphite flakes based MR fluid. Wear marks and damages are decreased significantly with the increased amount of graphite flakes as found in surface roughness tests. SEM and EDS are used to characterize the worn surfaces. This research provides information about the effectiveness of graphite flakes in the MR clutch to improve the device's performance.

A magnetorheological (MR) fan clutch is introduced. Based on Herschel-Bulkley model, the equation of transmission torque developed by MR fluids is derived to compute the torque transmission ability in the MR fan clutch. The necessary gap and the need of MR fluid volume between two parallel circular discs of the clutch are carried out. The results indicate that, the transmission torque of the MR fan clutch developed rapidly depend on the yield strength of MR fluid. The necessary gap and the volume for the MR fan clutch can be obtained based on MR fluid properties, the desired control torque ratio, the angular velocity and load torque of the clutch.

Magnetorheological (MR) fluids are materials that respond to an applied magnetic field with a change in their rheological properties. Upon application of a magnetic field, MR fluids have a variable yield strength. Altering the strength of the applied magnetic field will control the yield stress of these fluids. In this paper, the method for measuring the yield stress of MR fluids is proposed. The curves between the yield stress of the MR fluid and the applied magnetic field are obtained from the experiment. The result indicates that with the increase of the applied magnetic field the yield stress of the MR fluids goes up rapidly.

The yield stress is one of the most important parameters that characterize viscoplastic properties of magnetorheological (MR) fluids. Based on the microstructure of magnetic-chain a theoretical model is developed to analyze the effect of the applied magnetic field on the yield stress. It has been shown that the values of the yield stress calculated by the model agree well with the experimental data.
