Concerning the stress and displacement of the partner under lateral load, reference on full-scale model tests on behavior of cast-in-place concrete pipe piles, two cases are analyzed by means of 3D finite element method, calculations show that in condition I, pile and cap rigid joint (pile foundation) plus partner, partner block the punching stress from pile top to cap continue to spread; and in condition II, the distance between pile top and pile cap is 200 mm, partner is in normal bending shear state; As the flexural rigidity of partner is much larger than the pile, if under earthquake or other rare action, partner may sacrifice firstly to keep pile perform well.

The cracks are likely to initiate on a lateral loaded pile and would cause greater deflection at the pile head. However, there is a lack of thorough investigation into the effect of cracking on the response of the lateral loaded pile. In this article, a full-scale field test was carried out to investigate the behavior of Drilled and Postgrouted Concrete Pipe Pile under lateral loads. A novel analysis method for the lateral loaded pile, which can take the cracking effects into consideration, was proposed, and the validity was verified by the test results. With the proposed method, the cracking effects on flexural rigidity, displacement, rotation, and bending moment of the pile were studied. In brief, cracking effect would dramatically reduce the flexural rigidity of the pile, remarkable increase the displacement and rotation of the pile top, and slightly decrease bending moment of the pile. Unambiguously, the results show that the proposed method can excellently predict the response of laterally loaded piles under cracking effects.

Concerning the stress and displacement of the cap under lateral load with or without pile partner, reference on PCC lateral load test and numerical simulation, build finite element model of a pile under lateral load to study the stress and displacement of the cap, calculations show that the diffusion effect help partner to reduce stress concentration of the pile cap, and foundation slab can be designed thinner if there are pile partners.

Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction is extensively used in microscopic applications. Reducing excessive error points and achieving accurate matching of weak texture regions have been the classical challenges for 3D microscopic vision. A Multi-ST algorithm was proposed to improve matching accuracy. The process is performed in two main stages: scaled microscopic images and regularized cost aggregation. First, microscopic image pairs with different scales were extracted according to the Gaussian pyramid criterion. Second, a novel cost aggregation approach based on the regularized multi-scale model was implemented into all scales to obtain the final cost. To evaluate the performances of the proposed Multi-ST algorithm and compare different algorithms, seven groups of images from the Middlebury dataset and four groups of experimental images obtained by a binocular microscopic system were analyzed. Disparity maps and reconstruction maps generated by the proposed approach contained more information and fewer outliers or artifacts. Furthermore, 3D reconstruction of the plug gauges using the Multi-ST algorithm showed that the error was less than 0.025 mm.

Abstract There has been a growing interest in assessing the risks to the marine environment from produced water discharges. This study describes the development of a numerical approach, POM-RW, based on an integration of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) and a Random Walk (RW) simulation of pollutant transport. Specifically, the POM is employed to simulate local ocean currents. It provides three-dimensional hydrodynamic input to a Random Walk model focused on the dispersion of toxic components within the produced water stream on a regional spatial scale. Model development and field validation of the predicted current field and pollutant concentrations were conducted in conjunction with a water quality and ecological monitoring program for an offshore facility located on the Grand Banks of Canada. Results indicate that the POM-RW approach is useful to address environmental risks associated with the produced water discharges.

A numerical study of a turbulent plane jet impinging on a convex surface and on a flat surface is presented, using the large eddy simulation approach and the Smagorinski-Lilly sub-grid-scale model. The effects of the wall curvature on the unsteady filtered, and the steady mean, parameters characterizing the dynamics of the wall jet are addressed in particular. In the free jet upstream of the impingement region, significant and fairly ordered velocity fluctuations, that are not turbulent in nature, are observed inside the potential core. Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in the shear layer between the jet and the surrounding air are detected in the form of wavy sheets of vorticity. Rolled up vortices are detached from these sheets in a more or less periodic manner, evolving into distorted three dimensional structures. Along the wall jet the Coanda effect causes a marked suction along the convex surface compared with the flat one. As a result, relatively important tangential velocities and a stretching of sporadic streamwise vortices are observed, leading to friction coefficient values on the curved wall higher than those on the flat wall.

Background and Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the effective method to torque the incisor with thermoplastic aligner using a three-dimensional (3D) finite element method. Materials and Methods: Three finite element models of maxilla and maxillary dentition were developed. In the first model, thermoplastic aligner without any auxiliaries was used. In the second and third models, thermoplastic aligner with horizontal ellipsoid composite attachment and power ridge were used, respectively. The software used for the study was ANSYS 14.5 FE. A force of 100 g was applied to torque the upper right central incisor. The resultant force transfer, stress distribution, and tooth displacement were evaluated. Results: The overall tooth displacement and stress distribution appeared high in the model with power ridge, whereas the root movement was more in the horizontal ellipsoid composite attachment model. The model without any auxillaries produced least root movement and stress distribution. Conclusion: Horizontal ellipsoid composite attachment achieved better torque of central incisor than the model with power ridge and model without any auxillaries.

Since the thickness of the stacked silicon chips in 3D integration has been thinned to less than 100 μm, the local thermal deformation of the chips has increased drastically because of the decrease of the flexural rigidity of the thinned chips. The clear periodic thermal deformation and thus, the thermal residual stress distribution appears in the stacked chips due to the periodic alignment of metallic bumps, and they deteriorate the reliability of products. In this paper, the dominant structural factors of the local residual stress in a silicon chip are discussed quantitatively based on the results of a three-dimensional finite element analysis and the measurement of the local residual stress in a chip using stress sensor chips. The piezoresistive strain gauges were embedded in the sensor chips. The length of each gauge was 2 μm, and an unit cell consisted of 4 gauges with different crystallographic directions. This alignment of strain gauges enables to measure the tensor component of three-dimensional stress fields separately. Test flip chip substrates were made by silicon chip on which the area-arrayed tin/copper bumps were electroplated. The width of a bump was fixed at 200 μm, and the bump pitch was varied from 400 μm to 1000 μm. The thickness of the copper layer was about 40 μm and that of tin layer was about 10 μm. This tin layer was used for the rigid joint formation by alloying with copper interconnection formed on a stress sensing chip. The measured amplitude of the residual stress increased from about 30 MPa to 250 MPa depending on the combination of materials such as bump, underfill, and interconnections. It was confirmed that both the material constant of underfill and the alignment structure of fine bumps are the dominant factors of the local deformation and stress of a silicon chip mounted on area-arrayed metallic bumps. It was also confirmed experimentally that both the hound’s-tooth alignment between a TSV (Through Silicon Via) and a bump and control of mechanical properties of electroplated copper thin films used for the TSV and bump is indispensable in order to minimize the packaging-induced stress in the three-dimensionally mounted chips. This test chip is very effective for evaluating the packaging-process induced stress in 3D stacked chips quantitatively.

This work discusses procedures used to determine effective shear area of ship sections. Five types of ships have been studied. Initially, the vertical natural frequencies of an acrylic scale model 3m in length in a laboratory at university are obtained from experimental tests and from a three dimensional numerical model, and are compared to those calculated from a one dimensional model which the effective shear area was calculated by a practical computational method based on thin-walled section Shear Flow Theory. The second studied ship was a ship employed in midshipmen training. Two models were made to complement some studies and vibration measurements made for those ships in the end of 1980 decade when some vibration problems in them were solved as a result of that effort. Comparisons were made between natural frequencies obtained experimentally, numerically from a three dimensional finite element model and from a one dimensional model in which effective shear area is considered. The third and fourth were, respectively, a tanker ship and an AHTS (Anchor Handling Tug Supply) boat, both with comparison between three and one dimensional models results out of water. Experimental tests had been performed in these two ships and their results were used in other comparison made after the inclusion of another important effect that acts simultaneously: the added mass. Finally, natural frequencies experimental and numerical results of a barge are presented. The natural frequencies numerical results of vertical hull vibration obtained from these approximations of effective shear areas for the five ships are finally discussed.
