WC-Co cemented carbide specimens were prepared via vacuum sintering. The influences of composition and sintering temperature on phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of WC-Co cemented carbide were investigated. The results show that dense specimens were obtained in the sintering temperature range of 1280~1400°C and the relative density reached over 95%. Only WC and Co3W3C (-phase) were detected by XRD without any else phases, even though Co. With the ascended sintering temperature, hardness increased and the transverse rupture strength (TRS) ascended to peak value and then descended. WC-Co cemented carbide with excellent mechanical properties (HRA>90, TRS~700MPa and KIC>10MPa•m1/2) were obtained.

WC-8Co cemented carbide specimens were prepared via vacuum sintering. The influences of sintering time on phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of WC-8Co cemented carbide were investigated. The results show that dense specimens were obtained in the sintering time range of 15min~60min and the relative density reached over 95%. Only WC and Co3W3C (γ-phase) were detected by XRD without any else phases, even though Co. With the ascended sintering time, the transverse rupture strength (TRS) increased and hardness ascended to peak value and then descended. WC-Co cemented carbide with excellent mechanical properties (HRA>90, TRS~630MPa and KIC>7MPa·m1/2) were obtained. It would be a good candidate for applications of friction stir welding tool.

WC-8Co cemented carbide specimens were prepared via vacuum sintering. The effects of cold isostatic pressing (CIP) on microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that only WC and Co3W3C (γ-phase) were detected by XRD without any else phases, even though Co. Dense WC-8Co cemented carbide samples were obtained and relative density reached over 98%. The pressing method, instead of pressure, took an important role in the mechanical properties of WC-8Co cemented carbide. KIC and TRS of WC-8Co cemented carbide were improved at least 27% and 24%, respectively, by the use of CIP. WC-8Co cemented carbide with excellent mechanical properties (HRA>93.5, KIC>11MPa·m1/2, TRS>870MPa) was obtained by using CIP.

WC-FeAl composites were fabricated by vacuum sintering technique from mixture of WC and FeAl powders containing various oxygen content. Mechanical properties such as hardness, fracture toughness and transverse rupture strength were influenced by the oxygen content in the powders. Control of the oxygen content was succeeded by changing the powder preparation process. Contrary to expectations, the reduction of oxygen content led to degrade the fracture toughness and transverse rupture strength of the composites. This result was attributed to the microstructural change in the sintered composite. The sintered composite of lower oxygen content exhibited WC grain growth or inhomogeneous microstructure, which can be the cause of degradation of those mechanical properties. It was concluded that the oxygen content was one of the key factors to influence the microstructure or mechanical properties of WC-FeAl composites.

The experimental results indicated that the WC-12wt% Co specimens showed excellent mechanical properties and microstructure by the optimal sintering process. The G5 specimen sintered at 1400°C/1 h achieved a relative density of 98% and a hardness of HRA 88.5. Meanwhile, the TRS increased to 2400 MPa. F12 specimens that sintered at 1350°C/1 h achieved a relative density of 99% and a hardness of HRA 92.5. The TRS was also enhanced to 2170 MPa. In this study, the η phase (Co3W3C) precipitated at a high sintering temperature. The precipitations generated by liquid phase sintering gathered in some specific regions of the specimens and reacted with the WC particles. In addition, Co3W3C was a hard and brittle phase that resulted in a low TRS for the specimens; and a large amount of η phases were detrimental to the fracture toughness of the specimens.

Al2O3-TiC-ZrO2ceramic composites (ATZ) were fabricated by hot-pressed sintering. The phases and microstructure of the composites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The relative density and mechanical properties (flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vicker’s hardness) of the composites were tested. The results show that the microstructure of the composites was the gray core-white rim. With the increase of sintering temperature, the relative density and mechanical properties of the composites increased first and then decreased. The composite sintered at 1705°C has the highest synthetical properties, and its relative density, flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness are 98.3%,970MPa,6.0 MPa•m1/2and 20.5GPa, respectively.

Porous ceramics (bricks) was obtained using red clay, milled fusible cullet, and biowaste in the temperature range 950-1000?C. The high content of water in biowaste eliminates the necessity of introducing water in soft mud forming of bricks. The porosity, water absorption capacity, and mechanical properties of the prepared ceramics depend on content of milled cullet and sintering temperature.

In this paper, a new type of Ti3SiC2/Cu composites with the volume fractions of 30% Ti3SiC2 particle was prepared by hot pressing and vacuum sintering respectively. The effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the density, resistance and Vickers hardness of Cu-30vol%Ti3SiC2 composite were investigated. The results show that the mechanical properties of the composites prepared by hot pressing are better than that prepared by vacuum sintering. The relative densities of Cu-30vol% Ti3SiC2 composites are rather high in suitable sintering conditions. It achieved 100% for the composites prepared by hot pressing at 930°C for 2h, and 98.4% for the composites prepared by vacuum sintering at 1250°C for 1h. At the same time, the maximum Vickers hardness reached 1735MPa at 900°C by hot pressing. The resistance and Vickers hardness of the composites decreased with an increase in sintering temperature, whereas the density increased. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to observe the microstructure of the composites. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties was discussed.

Four series of cermets with the SiC whisker content between 0 and 1.0 wt.% were prepared by vacuum sintering. The transverse rupture strength (TRS), hardness (HRA) and fracture toughness (KIC) were also measured. The SiC whiskeraddition was located at the grain boundaries, which prevented grain boundary migration and restrained the grain growth. However, an increasing SiC whisker content decreased the wettability of the binder on the Mo2FeB2 hard phase. The highest TRS and fracture toughness was found for the cermets with 0.5 wt.% SiC whisker addition, whereas the cermets without SiC whisker addition exhibited the maximum hardness.
