This paper presents vibration control responses of a multi-story structure installed with a semi-active magneto-rheological(MR) damper. As a first step, performance characteristics of three different working modes for MR fluid are compared and the mixed mode type of MR damper is chosen as an optimal candidate for the vibration control of the multi-story structure. An appropriate size of the mixed mode MR damper is devised and manufactured on the basis of the field-dependent Bingham model of the MR fluid which is commercially available. The damping force of the mixed mode MR damper is evaluated with respect to the excitation frequency at various magnetic fields. After formulating the governing equation of motion for the small scaled three-story structure associated with the MR damper, the linear quadratic regulator(LQR) controller to effectively suppress unwanted structural vibrations is designed by imposing semi-active actuating conditions. The control algorithm is then empirically implemented under earthquake conditions and the control responses of the horizontal relative displacement and acceleration are evaluated in time and frequency domains through computer simulations.

In this work, three different magneto-rheological(MR) dampers, which are applicable for vibration control of a multi-story structure, are devised and their performance characteristics are compared. As a first step, the schematic configurations of the shear, flow, and mixed mode MR dampers are described with design constraints. The analytical models to predict the field-dependent damping forces are derived for each type and their damping forces are evaluated. The field-dependent damping forces are compared in terms of the damping force magnitude and the mixed-mode type of MR damper is chosen as an optimal candidate for the vibration control of the multi-story structure. An appropriate size of the mixed mode MR damper is manufactured and its field-dependent damping characteristics are evaluated in time domain. In addition, the displacement vs. damping force cycles of the piston are observed at various field intensities.

Abstract Articulated tower is a compliant offshore structure deployed in deep waters for oil and gas exploration. The base of the tower is connected to the sea bed through universal joint, which allows the tower to rotate about horizontal axis (pitch). Articulated towers attain stability due to large buoyancy forces acting on it. Under extreme wave loads, the response of ALP can exceed the design limit causing discomfort to the occupants and create unfavourable working conditions. Structural control systems can be implemented in order to reduce the response of ALP, thereby protecting the structure from damages and to increase its life span. In this paper, a semi-active optimal control strategy using Magneto-Rheological damper is adopted to reduce the responses of ALP. Bouc-Wen model is used to describe the force generated by MR-Damper. For achieving the optimal performance of the control system, the applied voltage is varied according to the measured feedback at any moment to change the damping force using linear quadratic regulator technique. Several parametric studies have been conducted and the performance of the controller is evaluated. It is observed that the response of ALP is reduced considerably by using MR-damper as a semi-active control device. However, the capacity of the damper required for achieving the desired control is huge.

This paper addresses the design problem of piezoelectric actuators for multimodal active vibration control. The design process is carried out by a topology optimization procedure which aims at maximizing a control performance index written in terms of the controllability Gramian, which is a measure that describes the ability of the actuator to move the structure from an initial condition to a desired final state in a finite time interval. The main work contribution is that independent sets of design variables are associated with each modal controllability index, then the multi-objective problem can be split into independent single-objective problems. Thus, no weighting factors are required to be tuned to give each vibration mode a suitable relevance in the optimization problem. A material interpolation scheme based on the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) and the Piezoelectric Material with Penalization (PEMAP) models is employed to consider the different sets of design variables and the sensitivity analysis is carried out analytically. Numerical examples are presented by considering the design and vibration control for a cantilever beam and a beam fixed at both ends to show the efficacy of the proposed formulation. The control performance of the optimized actuators is analyzed using a Linear-Quadratic Regulator (LQR) simulation.

The Active Rotary Inertia Driver (ARID) system is a novel vibration control system that can effectively mitigate the swing vibration of suspended structures. Parametric analysis is carried out using Simulink based on the mathematical model and the effectiveness is further validated by a series of experiments. Firstly, the active controller is designed based on the system mathematical model and the LQR (linear quadratic regulator) algorithm. Next, the parametric analysis is carried out using Simulink to study the key parameters such as the coefficient of the control algorithm, the rotary inertia ratio. Lastly, the ARID system control effectiveness and the parametric analysis results are further validated by the shaking table experiments. The effectiveness and robustness of the ARID system are well verified. The dynamic characteristics of this system are further studied, and the conclusions of this paper provide a theoretical basis for further development of such unique control system.

This paper presents the design of a magneto-rheological (MR) damper for an off-road vehicle where large suspension travel and high flow rates, as compared to typical passenger car suspensions, are required. The MR damper is expected to enhance the capability of the suspension system by allowing variable damping due to inherent properties of the MR fluid. MR fluids exhibit a reversible behavior that can be controlled with the intensity of a magnetic field, allowing a change in the effective viscosity and thereby in the damping characteristics of the fluid. A mathematical model of the proposed damper has been developed using the Bingham plastic model so as to determine the necessary geometry for the damper designed in this study, using the fluid flow rate and current to the electromagnet as the input variables. The model is used to compute the damping force, and the analytical results show that the designed MR damper provides the required range of damping force for the specific vehicle setup that is being used for this study. A valve-mode MR fluid channel has been designed such that the required minimum damping is reached in the off-state, and the desired maximum damping is reached in the on-state. For manufacturing and size considerations, the final design incorporates a triple pass layout with the MR fluid flowing through the three passages that are arranged in an S-shape so as to minimize the cross section of the electromagnet core.

This paper presents a new direct adaptive fuzzy controller and its effectiveness is verified by investigating the damping force tracking control of magnetorheological (MR) fluid based damper (MR damper in short) system. In the formulation of the proposed controller, a model of interval type 2 fuzzy controller is combined with the direct adaptive control to achieve high performance in vibration control. In addition,H∞(Hinfinity) tracking technique is used in building a model of the direct adaptive fuzzy controller in which an enhanced iterative algorithm is combined with the fuzzy model. After establishing a closed-loop control structure to achieve high control performance, a cylindrical MR damper is adopted and damping force tracking results are obtained and discussed. In addition, in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, two existing controllers are modified and tested for comparative work. It has been demonstrated from simulation and experiment that the proposed control scheme provides much better control performance in terms of damping force tracking error. This leads to excellent vibration control performance of the semiactive MR damper system associated with the proposed controller.

Two typical types of MR damper were proposed, where the orifice for MR fluid was designed to place between the piston and the cylinder in one type, and to place on the piston in the other type. In the former design, MR fluid was expected to be subjected to shear flow in the orifice, and subjected to Poiseuille flow in the latter design. The damping force of MR dampers was experimentally measured under various conditions of piston speed, piston amplitude and applied electric current to the magnetic coil. The experimental results showed that the maximum damping force were almost the same in both types of damper under the same conditions, except for case under very little amplitude. It was also shown that typical characteristics of MR damper depended on the clearance of orifice and air volume in MR dampers, and the optimal design for the dynamic range of damping force existed in relation to the clearance of orifice. The experimental result of the damping force of these dampers showed good agreement with the analytical result.

This paper concerns the dynamic modeling and vibration control of a space two-link flexible manipulator. Two types of PZT actuators, PZT shear actuator and torsional actuator, are used to suppress the bending-torsional-coupled vibration of the space manipulator. Using extended Hamilton’s principle and the finite element method, equations of motion of the space flexible manipulator with PZT actuators and tip mass are obtained. Based on modal analyze theory, the state space model of the system is then used to design the control system. A linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controller is designed to achieve vibration suppression of the space manipulator system. From the numerical results, we can get that the proposed controller has a suitable and efficient performance suppressing the bending-torsional-coupled vibration of the space two-link flexible manipulator.

Recently MRF damper -which has a significant controllable damping force - used frequently in many active and semi-active suspension systems. However, MRF damper needs controller to estimate the desired force to dissipate the occurred vibration instantaneously. PID controller is one of the effective feedback controllers which shows robustness and simplicity in control MRF dampers, but still the parameters of the PID controller under study to find out the optimum values. This study focused on the vibration control using Magneto-rheological (MR) damper on a FSAE quarter car suspension test rig to study and obtain the optimum running condition. The test rig was designed, modified and then tested using a P-controller integrated with MR damper, unbalance mass used as disturbance and analyzed using LABVIEW software in time and frequency domains. The natural frequency obtained was 2.2 Hz were similar to the actual FSAE car natural frequency. Based on the acceleration against time graph with different proportional gain value the optimal value for proportional gain, Kp was 1. Hence, the experiment work could be used as the initial stage to study and develop a robust controller to suppress vibration on a car.

Abstract The design and fabrication of a magneto rheological (MR) damper for bicycle suspension applications is addressed. Two 1998 Judy® Dampers are retrofitted with MR valves, to achieve the damping force adjustability that the MR fluid offers. One design attempts to use as many of the Judy® Damper components as possible. The second design significantly modifies the Judy® Damper, to better accommodate the MR valve and ease of fabrication and assembly, although fitting into the same envelope as the Judy® damper for a direct retrofit. The two MR dampers are fabricated and assembled for force-velocity characterization testing. The test results show that properly-designed MR dampers can provide significant dynamic performance improvements, as compared to conventional passive bicycle dampers.
