Seaweeds waste is a main oceanic nonproductive material in related industries. In this study, it was utilized for incubation of Cantharellus sp., a popular edible mushroom. The micro particles obtained from the incubation were investigated for antioxidant activities. The results showed that the Cantharellus can grow on the seaweeds waste and produced dense mycelia. Meanwhile, antioxidant assays showed that the total antioxidant capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity of the micro particles obtained from Cantharellus incubation were significantly higher than those of the seaweeds waste. This is not only the first time to incubate Cantharellus sp. on seaweeds waste, but also the first study involved in antioxidant activities of fermented culture with Cantharellus sp.. It would be a beneficial pathway to recycle seaweeds waste with incubation of Cantharellus to produce potential natural antioxidants.

In this study, the phenolic profiles and bioactivities of five representative cultivars of okra collected in China were investigated. Noticeable variations of phenolic compounds and their bioactivities were observed among these different cultivars of okra. The contents of total flavonoids (TFC) in “Shuiguo”, “Kalong 8”, “Kalong 3”, “Wufu”, and “Royal red” ranged from 1.75 to 3.39 mg RE/g DW, of which “Shuiguo” showed the highest TFC. Moreover, five individual phenolic compounds were found in okra by high performance liquid chromatography analysis, including isoquercitrin, protocatechuic acid, quercetin-3-O-gentiobioside, quercetin, and rutin, while isoquercitrin and quercetin-3-O-gentiobioside were detected as the main phenolic compounds in okra. Moreover, all tested okra exhibited significant antioxidant activities (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging capacity, 2,2’-azino-bis (3-ethylenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) radical scavenging capacity, and ferric reducing antioxidant power) and inhibitory effects on digestive enzymes (lipase, α-glucosidase, and α-amylase). Indeed, “Shuiguo” exhibited much better antioxidant activities and inhibitory activities on digestive enzymes, which might be attributed to its high TFC. Results suggested that okra, especially “Shuiguo”, could be developed as natural antioxidants and inhibitors against hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia in the fields of functional foods and pharmaceuticals, which could meet the increasing demand for high-quality okra with health-promoting properties in China.

ABSTRACT Th e aim of this study was to examine the phenolic and flavonoid contents and antioxidant activities of methanol and chloroform extracts of leaves and twigs of Daphne blagayana. Th e total phenolic content in the chloroform extract of plant twigs (90.26 ± 0.69 mg GA/g) was higher than that of the other extracts (from 76.56±0.89 to 77.45±0.43 mg GA/g). In the case of flavonoids, a greater value was also obtained for the chloroform extract of twigs (35.24±0.55 mg RU/g). Several diff erent methods were used to determine the antioxidant activity of the tested extracts, including total antioxidant capacity, metal chelating activity, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and inhibitory activity against lipid peroxidation. Our results showed that although secondary metabolites of the plants may contribute significantly to their antioxidant activities, those antioxidant activities were not directly related to the phenolic and flavonoid amounts. Th e results of the present analysis demonstrated, for the first time, that Daphne blagayana leaves and twigs possess high phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as potential antioxidant activity. Th is study suggests that Daphne blagayana twigs and leaves may potentially be used as an accessible source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract Objectives It has been a long time since seaweeds have been used for food ingredients in Asian countries. Recently, a body of research has revealed the health benefits of bioactive compounds in seaweeds, especially their antioxidant capacities. Although numerous seaweeds inhabit in the ocean, only a small percentage has been explored for functional food. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidant capacities of various seaweeds grown off the Korean coast to screen for the potential functional food sources. Methods Ten ethanol extracts of Korean seaweeds were provided by the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea, which included Scytosiphon gracilis, Scytosiphon lomentaria, Sargassum muticum, Sargassum confusum, Petrospongium rugosum, Sargassum fusiforme, Petalonia fascia, Sargassum nigrifolium, Ishige foliacea, and Myelophycus simplex. Hundred mg/L of samples in 80% methanol was used to measure their ABTS, DPPH, and superoxide radical scavenging activities. Mg vitamin C equivalent antioxidant capacity (VCEAC)/100 mg was used to express the ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging capacities. For the superoxide radical scavenging capacity, inhibition rate of superoxide radical generation (%) was calculated. Results Among the ten seaweeds, S. nigrifolium and I. foliacea exhibited the most significant radical scavenging capacities. DPPH radical scavenging capacities of I. foliacea and S. nigrifolium were 122.4 mg VCEAC/100 mg and 95.8 mg VCEAC/100 mg, respectively. For ABTS radical scavenging capacity, I. foliacea exhibited 178.5 mg VCEAC/100 mg, followed by S. nigrifolium as 80.9 mg VCEAC/100 mg. I. foliacea inhibited about 68% of superoxide radical generation followed by S. nigrifolium (40.6%) while vitamin C as positive control inhibited about 28.9% of superoxide radical generation. The antioxidant capacities measured by the three assays were positively correlated with each other. Conclusions The current study explored total antioxidant capacities of various Korean seaweeds and found I. foliacea and S. nigrifolium as the most potential antioxidant-rich food resources. Further research would be warranted to investigate bioactive compounds from S. nigrifolium and I. foliacea. The total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of 6 Salvia spp. exudates were measured to find new potential sources of natural antioxidants. Total phenolic content was assessed by a modified Prussian blue method, and the antioxidant activity by two methods: 1,1- diphenyl-2-picryl- hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity assay and lipoxygenase inhibitory assay. The total phenolic content ranged between 1.3 μg/mg DW ( S. fallax) and 74.0 μg/mg DW ( S. cacaliaefolia). In the DPPH test, S. cacaliaefolia was more effective than BHT, while in the inhibition of lipid peroxidation all the extracts presented good antioxidant capacity.

AbstractThe polyphenol profile, antioxidant activity (particularly peroxyl radical-scavenging capacity (PSC) and cellular antioxidant activity (CAA)) and cytotoxicity of extracts from seven varieties of blue honeysuckle were compared in this study. Moreover, an analysis of correlations between individual polyphenol profiles and antioxidant activities was also conducted. Seventeen components were found in the investigated blue honeysuckle extracts, with anthocyanins being the prominent bioactive components among polyphenols. Fruit peel contained higher concentrations of individual anthocyanins compared to the fruit pulp. Beilei blue honeysuckle had the highest antioxidant activity. Correlation analysis showed that antioxidant activity values were highly associated with cyanidin-3-glucoside levels. Blue honeysuckle extracts were not cytotoxic over the range of doses tested. Among the varieties analyzed, Beilei possessed the highest antioxidant properties and was found to be the most appropriate source of natural antioxidants.

Present research was designed to evaluate the free radical scavenging capacities and antioxidant activities of rhizome extracts of Alpinia galanga prepared in different solvent systems (60% aqueous methanol, 60% aqueous ethanol and distilled water) using different in vitro chemical assays. Antioxidant components such as total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and ascorbic acid contents of the ginger species were screened. Antioxidant assays employed included sulphur free radical reactivity assay, ferric ion reducing power assay, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity assay, hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, nitric oxide scavenging activity assay and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. The obtained data reveal that the plant extracts contained significant amount of the observed antioxidant components and also exhibited significant free radical scavenging capacities. Methanol (60%) extract exhibited highest antioxidant activity than other solvents. The polyphenolic constituents of the plant extracts appear to be largely responsible for the radical scavenging capacity. The plant extracts act as promising source of antioxidants, and may be useful for development of nutraceuticals and pharmaceutical drugs.

AbstractThe sulphated polysaccharides from brown algae have been attracting extensive interest due to their numerous biological activities. The present study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and free-radical scavenging capacity of crude sulphated polysaccharides (CSP) from Turbinaria ornata, a marine brown algae. The CSP was extracted from T. ornata using hot water with the yield of 14.31% (w/w). The chemical composition analysis of CSP showed 71.07 ± 4.61 % of total sugar, 1.81 ± 0.035 % total protein, 27 ± 1.49 % sulphate, and 6.16 ± 0.36 % total phenol. The presence of sulphated polysaccharides in the CSP was confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis. The in vitro antioxidant activity of CSP was evaluated using total antioxidant power assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP). The results revealed that the total antioxidant capacity of CSP was 22.205 ± 0.875 (equivalent mg of ascorbic acid/g of CSP) and 0.556 ± 0.03 (mM of FeSO4/mg of CSP) FRAP value, respectively. The free-radical scavenging ability of CSP was demonstrated using 2,2’-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and superoxide radical. The capacity of the CSP to scavenge 50% of free radicals was found to be 88.71 ± 1.01, 440.07 ± 4.43 and 352 ± 4.58 μg/mL for ABTS, DPPH and superoxide radical, respectively. These results showed that the CSP from T. ornata possess antioxidant and free-radical scavenging capacity.

Background Amaranthus hybridus L. is an annual, erect or less commonly ascending herb that is a member of the Amaranthaceae family. Polysaccharides extracted from traditional Chinese medicines may be effective substances with antioxidant activity. Methods In this study, we isolated crude polysaccharides from A. hybridus (AHP-M) using microwave-assisted extraction. Then, the AHP-M was purified by chromatography with DEAE-32 cellulose, and two fractions, AHP-M-1 and AHP-M-2, were obtained. The structural characteristics of AHP-M-1 and AHP-M-2 were investigated, and their antioxidant activities were analyzed in vitro. Results We found that the monosaccharide composition of AHP-M-1 was different from that of AHP-M-2. The molecular weights of AHP-M-1 and AHP-M-2 were 77.625 kDa and 93.325 kDa, respectively. The results showed that the antioxidant activity of AHP-M-2 was better than that of AHP-M-1. For AHP-M-2, the DPPH radical scavenging rate at a concentration of 2 mg/mL was 78.87%, the hydroxyl radical scavenging rate was 39.34%, the superoxide anion radical scavenging rate was 80.2%, and the reduction ability of Fe3+ was approximately 0.90. The total antioxidant capacity per milligram of AHP-M-2 was 6.42, which was higher than that of Vitamin C (Vc). Conclusion The in vitro test indicated that AHP-M-1 and AHP-M-2 have good antioxidant activity, demonstrating that A. hybridus L. polysaccharide has immense potential as a natural antioxidants.

Procyanidins (PC) from Vitis amurensis seeds was extracted using high-intensity pulsed electric field (PEF). The process parameters including pulse number, electric field strength, ratio of material to liquid and ethanol concentration were studied using response surface methodology, and extraction yield of the extracts were determined. Antioxidant activity of the extracts by PEF, ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE), microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and ethanol extraction (EAE) were compared based on total antioxidant capacity, DPPH radical scavenging capacity and ferrous ion chelating activity. The results revealed that the optimization of conditions of PEF are: pulse number 10; electric field strength 25 kV/cm; ratio of material to liquid 1:21 g/mL; ethanol concentration 63% (v/v), and the PC yields reached 8.23% under this condition. The PEF resulted in a highest extraction yield of PC among the four extraction methods. There was no significant difference in total antioxidant capacity of PC obtained by four methods, the DPPH radical scavenging capacity and ferrous ion chelating activity of PC extracted by PEF were close to that of UAE and MAE, which were superior to EAE. These showed that PEF was an effective method for extracting PC.
