In order to study the internal flow characteristics of roto-jet pump, the standard turbulence model and SIMPLEC algorithm were used to calculate the three-dimensional turbulence flow field under design condition. The simulation results reveal the internal flow phenomena of roto-jet pump, which shows the pressure near the suction surface and the inlet edge of impeller is minimum, and the cavitations is easy to occur . At the same time, the circumfluence and flow separation phenomenon is not found in the vicinity of the short blade, which is used to shunt the flow. The pressure gradient changed little in the rotor cavity. Is easy to form vortex at manifold import corners, there is no vortex generated on the second corner when the diffusion tube is used. The results obtained in this research provide a theoretical foundation for improving pump performance and reduce the hydraulic loss.

A series of experiments are performed to investigate and quantify the three-dimensional mean flow field in centrifugal compressor flow passages and to evaluate contemporary internal flow models. The experiments include the acquisition and analysis of LDV data in the impeller passages of a low-speed moderate-scale research mixed-flow centrifugal compressor operating at its design point. Predictions from a viscous internal flow model are then correlated with these data. The LDV data show the traditional jet-wake structure observed in many centrifugal compressors, with the wake observed along the shroud 70 percent of the length from the pressure to suction surface. The viscous model predicts the major flow phenomena. However, the correlations of the viscous predictions with the LDV data were poor.

Control valves have always been recognised as being among the most crucial control equipment, commonly utilised in versatile engineering applications. Hence, the need has arisen to identify the flow characteristics inside the valve, together with the incurred vibration induced as a result of the flow passing through the valve. Thanks to the tangible and fast progress made in the field of the flow simulation and numerical techniques, it has become possible to better observe the behavior of the flow passing inside a valve with view to examining its performance. Hence, the paper at hand is mainly concerned with introducing the modeling and simulation of a control valve. On the contrary, the flow system in a control valve is marked by a complex structure and nonlinear characteristics. The reasons for those qualities could be attributed to its construction as well as the fluid flow phenomena associated with it. It is especially for the sake of investigating and observing the flow characteristics, pertaining to a control valve equipped with different concave plug shapes and different openings, that the three-dimensional FSI simulation is conducted. In addition, it would be possible to make use of the obtained results relating to the three-dimensional analysis to achieve low noise and high efficiency improvement. Furthermore, all results will be validated on experimental grounds.

The three-dimensional flow field characteristics are obtained by performing numerical simulation of flow in a lobe pump with twisted rotors. The relationship between the dynamic flow structure and the flow fluctuation is explored. Actually, the viscous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved within an unsteady flow model. The dynamic mesh technique is applied to obtain the dynamic flow structure. By comparing the simulated results of straight rotor with those of twisted rotor, the effect of rotor shape on the flow fluctuation was revealed. Finally, the impact of the lobes number of rotors on flow pulsations is discussed. The results show that there is an intrinsic relationship between the flow fluctuation and the vortex in the lobe pump. The use of twisted rotors can effectively improve the internal flow characteristics of lobe pump and reduce flow fluctuation. With the increase of the number of lobes, the lobe pump output is more stable and capacity has been improved.

Abstract This paper describes the numerical optimization of an axial fan focused on the blade and guide vane (GV). For numerical analysis, three-dimensional (3D) steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with the shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model are discretized by the finite volume method (FVM). The objective function is enhancement of aerodynamic performance with specified total pressure. To select the design variables which have main effect to the objective function, 2k factorial design is employed as a method for design of experiment (DOE). In addition, response surface method (RSM) based on the central composite design applied to carry out the single-objective optimization. Effects on the components such as bell mouth and hub cap are considered with previous analysis. The internal flow characteristics between base and optimized model are analyzed and discussed.

In order to make the centrifugal pump run efficiently and stably under various working conditions, the influences of the incoming vortex flow in the inlet pipe on the main flow in the impeller is studied numerically, based on the k − ω SST turbulence model. Some guide vanes with different offset angle were added to change the statistical characteristic of the internal flow in the inlet pipe of the centrifugal pump. Both contour distributions of internal flow and statistical results of external performance are obtained and analyzed. The results show that the existence of vanes can divide the large vortex because of the reversed flow from the rotating impeller at low flow rate conditions into small vortices, which are easier to dissipate, make the velocity and pressure distribution more uniform, improve the stability of the flow in the impeller, reduce the hydraulic loss, and improve the hydraulic performance of the pump. The pump with vanes of offset angle 25° has a small pressure pulsation amplitude at each monitoring point. Comparing with the performance of the original pump, the head increased by around 2% and efficiency increased by around 2.5% of the pump with vanes of offset angle 25°.

Considerable progress in development and application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for aeroengine internal flow systems has been made in recent years. CFD is regularly used in industry for assessment of air systems, and the performance of CFD for basic axisymmetric rotor/rotor and stator/rotor disc cavities with radial throughflow is largely understood and documented. Incorporation of three-dimensional geometrical features and calculation of unsteady flows are becoming commonplace. Automation of CFD, coupling with thermal models of the solid components, and extension of CFD models to include both air system and main gas path flows are current areas of development. CFD is also being used as a research tool to investigate a number of flow phenomena that are not yet fully understood. These include buoyancy-affected flows in rotating cavities, rim seal flows and mixed air/oil flows. Large eddy simulation has shown considerable promise for the buoyancy-driven flows and its use for air system flows is expected to expand in the future.

The unsteady flow characteristics of a forward multi-wing centrifugal fan under a low flow rate are studied using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. This paper emphasizes the eddy current distribution in terms of the Q criterion method, as well as pressure fluctuation, frequency spectrum, and kinetic energy spectrum analysis of internal monitoring points in a forward multi-wing centrifugal fan. The numerical results show that abnormal eddies mainly appear at the volute outlet and near the volute tongue, boundary layer separation occurs near the suction surface of the blade, and shedding eddies appear at the trailing edge of the blade with the time evolution. The unsteady flow characteristics of a forward multi-wing centrifugal fan at a small flow rate provide significant physical insight into understanding the internal flow law.

In order to understand the pressure fluctuation characteristics of a semi-open cutting pump, the three-dimensional unsteady flow fields were calculated. External and internal flow characteristics of four schemes with different relative angles between the rotary cutter and the impeller were studied. The pressure fluctuations in the lower plate, the upper plate, the clearance between the rotary cutter and the fixed cutter, the first section in volute and nearby parts of the tongue were all analyzed, which are all the places that pressure distributions are greatly affected by the static and dynamic interaction, and at the same time, the force on the impeller was also analyzed. The results show that the fluctuations at different positions change periodically; the main frequency is blade frequency. The amplitude of pressure fluctuation decreases from near the rotating part to far away, from near the tongue to far from the tongue. Due to the influence of both impeller and rotary cutter, the pressure fluctuation on the lower plate is the largest. The pressure fluctuation is affected by flow rate, the larger the flow rate, the greater the pressure fluctuation. The radial and axial forces of the impeller change periodically with time, and the number of wave peaks and wave valleys is the same as the number of blades.
