Three novel B, N, S-containing tri (hydroxymethyl) propane (TMP) esters were synthesized. The anti-wear performance of the synthesized compounds as additives in rapeseed oil (RO) was evaluated with a four-ball tester. The results show that the novel TMP esters have good antiwear performance when they are used as additives in rapeseed oil under all test loads. The action mechanism was investigated through analysis of the X-ray photoelectron energy spectrometer. The results indicate that the additives in RO adsorb and react with metal surface to form a protective film composed of organic compounds, B2O3 and iron oxide.

A novel ester derivative, dodecyl xanthate acetic dodecyl xanthate ester(DXAD) was synthesized and it’s tribological behaviors as additives in hydrogenated oil, were evaluated using a four-ball tester. Results show that the compound possesses good antiwear performance, extreme pressure capacity, and good friction-reducing property. The action mechanism was estimated through analysis of the worn surface with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of XPS and SEM analyses illustrate that the prepared compound as an additive in hydrogenated oil forms a protective film containing ferric sulfide and ferric sulfate compounds on the rubbed surface.

Two novel benzotriazolyl-containing polysulfides were synthesized as a part of the efforts of molecular design. The tribological properties of the synthetic products as additives in rapeseed oil were evaluated using a four-ball machine and compared with that of diiso-butylpolysulfides (DIBPS). The copper corrosion-inhibiting performance and thermal stabilities of the additives were explored as well. The results showed that the synthetic heterocyclic polysulfides had better corrosion-inhibiting properties and thermal stability than the DIBPS. Moreover, the heterocyclic polysulfide additives can improve extreme pressure properties of rapeseed oil as well as antiwear and friction-reducing abilities. However, compared with DIBPS, the heterocyclic polysulfide additives showed a little weaker performance. Tribofilms were investigated by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Surface analysis indicated that the benzotriazolyl-containing polysulfides experienced tribochemical reactions with the rubbing steel surface to generate FeS and FeS2, which together with the chemically absorbed organic N-containing species formed a surface protective film and hence significantly reduce wear of the steel-steel frictional pair. The titled synthetic compounds could be used as promising environmentally friendly multifunctional lubricating additives.

The ashless 2,4-bis-dipropylamino-6-(O,O’-dibuthyldithio- phosphate)-s-1,3,5- triazine (PrBT) and 2,4-bis-morpholinyl-6- (O,O’-dibuthyldithiophosphate) -s-1,3,5 -triazine (MoBT), were prepared and their tribological behaviors as additives in rapeseed oil(RSO) were evaluated using a four-ball tester. The worn surfaces of the steel balls were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The results indicate that the additives possess good load-carrying capacities. Moreover, they both have good antiwear and friction-reducing property at relatively middle concentration(1~2 wt%) and under all test loads, and in some condition, these triazine derivatives can replace the zinc dialkylthiophosphate. The results of XPS analyses illustrate that the prepared compounds as additives in RSO forms a protective film containing inorganic sulfide, sulfate, oxidized compounds and organic nitrogen-containing compounds on the metal surface during the sliding process.

In order to be competitive, it is demanded to have thin, tough and long lasting coatings. An important aspect is to use stable deposition technologies. As Cr assures wear, corrosion and high temperature resistance, the most employed coatings in industry generally contain Cr. Nevertheless, Cr is a hazardous element for the humans’ health, therefore, sustainable alternatives are needed to be implemented. The aim of this work is to investigate the microstructure, hardness, corrosion resistance and wear behavior of the novel WC-CoMo compared to conventional WC-Co coatings. So far, WC-CoMo coatings are not part of state of the art regarding the Atmospheric Plasma Sprayed (APS) coatings. WC-Co powder in plain form and mechanically mixed with Mo was deposited using the APS method on standardized Type A Almen Strips (C67 steel). The size of the powder grains varies between 5 µm and 30 µm. The obtained samples were investigated by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, and hardness, wear and corrosion behavior were also evaluated. Results revealed formation of different intermetallic phases around the WC particles, which have a benefic influence on the coating characteristics and microstructure.

Thermolysis of [8,8-(PMe2Ph)2-nido-8,7-PtCB9H11] in boiling toluene solution results in an elimination of the platinum centre and cluster closure to give the ten-vertex closo species [6-(PMe2Ph)-closo-1-CB9H9] in 85% yield as a colourles air stable solid. The product is characterized by NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Crystals (from hexane-dichloromethane) are monoclinic, space group P21/c, with a = 903.20(9), b = 1 481.86(11), c = 2 320.0(2) pm, β = 97.860(7)° and Z = 8, and the structure has been refined to R(Rw) = 0.045(0.051) for 3 281 observed reflections with Fo > 2.0σ(Fo). The clean high-yield elimination of a metal centre from a polyhedral metallaborane or metallaheteroborane species is very rare.

Some novel cobalt diphenylphosphine complexes were synthesized by reacting cobalt(II) chloride with (2-methoxyethyl)diphenylphosphine, (2-methoxyphenyl)diphenylphosphine, and 2-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)-6-(diphenylphosphino)pyridine. Single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction studies were obtained for the first two complexes, and their crystal structure was determined. The novel compounds were then used in association with methylaluminoxane (MAO) for the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene, and their behavior was compared with that exhibited in the polymerization of the same monomer by the systems CoCl2(PnPrPh2)2/MAO and CoCl2(PPh3)2/MAO. Some significant differences were observed depending on the MAO/Co ratio used, and a plausible interpretation for such a different behavior is proposed.
