Research on the Friction and Wear Properties of the Copper Matrix Composites Reinforced with Copperized Carbon Fibers

The aim of this paper is to develop a kind of copper matrix self-lubricious material with excellent friction and wear characteristics. The copper-graphite composites reinforced with short copper-coated carbon fibers (CF-C/Cu) were successfully developed using techniques of mechanical alloying, composite plating and hot press vacuum sintering. For comparison, copper-graphite composites without short copper-coated carbon fibers (C/Cu) were made under the same process. The wear testing was carried out using a rapid wear testing machine (M-200).Friction coefficient was measured by a micro-wear tester (UMT).The microstructure, abrasive dust and worn surface of the wear pins on the different condition such as load and wear time were examined by SEM. It was noted that the addition of copper-coated carbon fiber in the Cu-based composites can retard the transformation process which transforms from micro-cutting wear to adhesive wear and delamination. The abrasion loss of the composites with short copper-coated carbon fibers appeared a valley when the load increased from 10N to 30N. It showed that the addition of copper-coated carbon fiber enhanced the anti-friction and anti-wear property of copper matrix composite and better than the sample without carbon fibers.

Using 663-tin bronze, Ni, W, nanoAl2O3, MoS2, graphite, CaF2, and Ni coated graphite as the matrix alloy powder, in which copper-coated carbon fiber of 5%, 7%, 9%, 11% and 13% in volume fraction were added as the reinforcing phase, a novel type carbon fiber/copper-matrix self-lubricating composite materials was prepared by means of powder metallurgy. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of the composite materials are improved after adding copper-coated carbon fibers. The composite materials reach optimal overall mechanical performance under testing when the volume fraction of the added copper-coated carbon fibers is 11%.: with a hardness of 57.8 HV and a compressive strength of 222 MPa. The addition of carbon fiber also improved the friction and wear properties of the composite materials. Increasing the volume fraction of fiber, was found to increase the wear resistance and improve self-lubricating performance. A volume fraction of 11% gave a friction coefficient of 0.09 and abrasion loss of 4mg.

In this work, we report the carbon fiber-based wire-type asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs). The highly conductive carbon fibers were prepared by the carbonized and graphitized process using the polyimide (PI) as a carbon fiber precursor. To assemble the ASC device, the CoMnO2-coated and Fe2O3-coated carbon fibers were used as the cathode and the anode materials, respectively. FE-SEM analysis confirmed that the CoMnO2-coated carbon fiber electrode exhibited the porous hierarchical interconnected nanosheet structures, depending on the added amounts of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidizing agent, and Fe2O3-coated carbon fiber electrode showed a uniform distribution of porous Fe2O3 nanorods over the surface of carbon fibers. The nanostructured CoMnO2 were directly deposited onto carbon fibers by a chemical oxidation route without high temperature treatments. In particular, the electrochemical properties of the CoMnO2-coated carbon fiber with the concentration of 6 mmol APS presented the enhanced electrochemical activity, probably due to its porous morphologies and good conductivity. Further, to reduce the interfacial contact resistance as well as improve the adhesion between transition metal nanostructures and carbon fibers, the carbon fibers were pre-coated with the Ni layer as a seed layer using an electrochemical deposition method. The fabricated ASC device delivered a specific capacitance of 221 F g-1 at 0.7 A g-1 and good rate capability of 34.8% at 4.9 A g-1. Moreover, the wire-type device displayed the superior energy density of 60.16 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 490 W kg-1 and excellent capacitance retention of 95% up to 3,000 charge/discharge cycles.

The progressing cavity pump (PCP) always works in the waxy oil well. Therefore the research on the influence of various liquid paraffin contents in crude oil on the friction and wear behaviors of the progressing cavity pump`s stator is very important for choosing the best stator rubber and developing the service life of PCP. Wear behavior of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and fluororubber (FKM) was investigated at room temperature using a reciprocating friction and wear testing machine under the various paraffin contents in crude oil (0%、10%、30%、50%、100%). The wear morphology of blend was analyzed through the stereomicroscope and the wear behavior of two blends was also discussed and compared. The results show that the wear resistance of FKM is better than that of NBR under the same paraffin content in crude oil; With the increase of the paraffin content, the wear and coefficient of friction also increase. When the paraffin content in crude oil is less than 30%, the wear loss of NBR and FKM are basically the same; When the paraffin content in crude oil is more than 30%, the wear loss of NBR is far more than that of FKM.

This manuscript is dealt with the synthesis of short carbon fibers reinforced polycarbonate polymer composite by using injection modeling technique. Four different composite materials were obtained by varying the carbon fibers weight percentage of 10, 20, 30 and 40%. The synthesized carbon fibers/polycarbonate composites were characterized for their morphological, mechanical and thermal properties by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), universal testing machine (UTM) and IZOD strength test. The resultant carbon fibers/polycarbonate composites exhibited excellent interfacial adhesion between carbon fibers and polycarbonate resin. The tensile properties were observed to be monotonically increases with increasing carbon fiber content in the composite resin. The tensile strength of carbon fiber/polycarbonate composites with the carbon fiber content 40% were increased about 8 times than that of the pristine polycarbonate matrix. The carbon fibers/polycarbonate composites with 40 wt.% of short carbon fibers exhibited a high tensile strength and thermal conductivity. The incorporation of carbon fiber in to polycarbonate resin resulted in a significant enhancement in the mechanical and the thermal behavior. These studies suggested that the short carbon fiber incorporated polycarbonate composite matrix is a good candidate material for many technological applications.

The friction and wear properties of an Al6061 alloy reinforced with carbon fibers (CF) modified with Cu-Ni bimetallic layers were researched. Cu-Ni double layers were applied to the CF by electroless plating and Al6061-matrix composites were prepared by powder metallurgy technology. The metal-CF/Al interfaces and post-dry-wear-testing wear loss weights, friction coefficients, worn surfaces, and wear debris were characterized. After T6 heat treatment, the interfacial bonding mechanism of Cu-Ni-CF changed from mechanical bonding to diffusion bonding and showed improved interfacial bonding strength because the Cu transition layer reduced the fiber damage caused by Ni diffusion. The metal–CF interfacial bonding strongly influenced the composite’s tribological properties. Compared to the Ni-CF/Al and Cu-CF/Al composites, the Cu-Ni-CF/Al composite showed the highest hardness, the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate, and the best load-carrying capacity. The wear mechanisms of Cu-Ni-CF/Al composite are mainly slight abrasive wear and adhesive wear.

This paper aims to study the effect of different surface coatings of carbon fiber on the thermal, mechanical, and morphological properties of carbon fiber reinforced poly(phenylene sulfide) composites. To this end, unsized and different surface-coated carbon fibers were used. Prepared poly(phenylene sulfide)/carbon fiber composites were characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, tensile test, dynamic mechanical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Tensile strength values of the surfaced-coated carbon fibers reinforced poly(phenylene sulfide) composites are higher than the unsized carbon fiber reinforced poly(phenylene sulfide) composite. The highest tensile strength and modulus values were observed for the polyurethane-coated carbon fiber reinforcement. Dynamic mechanical analysis studies indicated that polyurethane-coated carbon fiber reinforced composite exhibited higher storage modulus and better adhesion than the others. Differential scanning calorimetry results show that melting and glass transition temperature of the composites did not change significantly. Scanning electron microscopic studies showed that polyurethane and epoxy-coated carbon fibers exhibited better adhesion with poly(phenylene sulfide).

Purpose This paper aims to clarify the friction properties of 304 steel surface modification. The surface modification includes laser texturing processing and nitriding treatment on 304 steel surface, and then the friction properties’ test was conducted on different friction directions and different upper test samples by using microfriction and wear testing machine. Design/methodology/approach The diameter and spacing of 100-, 150-, 200-, 300-μm pit array on the surface of 304 steel were calculated using a M-DPSS-50 semiconductor laser device. Then, the textured surface was nitriding-treated using a nitriding salt bath device. The chemical composition, surface morphology and surface microhardness of the composite-modified surface were measured by X-ray diffraction and by using an optical microscope and a microhardness tester. The tribological characteristics of the composite-modified surface were tested by MRTR microcomputer-controlled multifunctional friction and wear testing machine. Findings The result showed that a rule pit texture surface was obtained by the texture processing. The microhardness of nitriding treatment surface reached 574.27HV0.1, which significantly higher than 222.58HV0.1 of 304 steel. The composite-modified surface has excellent anti-friction and wear resistance properties when the upper specimen was GCr15 steel and ZrO2, respectively. The composite-modified surface has excellent anti-friction and anti-wear properties after long time friction under different angles. However, the friction coefficient and wear morphology of the friction pairs are not affected by the friction angle. Research limitations/implications Because of the chosen research approach, the research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed propositions further. Practical implications The paper conducted a systematic study of the tribological characteristics of 304 steel composite modification surface and provided a good basis for the extensive application of 304 steel. Social implications The study provides a good basis for the extensive application of 304 steel. Originality/value This paper fulfils an identified need to study the extensive application of 304 steel.
