Magnetorheological (MR) fluid is capable of changing its rheological characteristics under magnetic field. Controllability is one of the advantages of MR damper. Up to now, the dynamic characteristics of MR damper under impact loads have not been well known by researchers. In this paper, a new type of dynamic model for MR damper subject to impact load is derived. And in this novel model, it is pointed out that the square damping item and the inertia force item are two important factors which influence the total damping force in impact condition. The adding two items make the model more exactly describing its dynamic characteristics of MR damper in impact condition. This action makes the established model easier to do control analysis. Because of the polynomial form and a fixed coefficient, it is indicated that the optimization control method is a good choice for MR damper to track the demanded impact curves. Simulation analysis results prove that based on its controllability of damping force MR damper provide, its vibration-reduction and shock-resistant properties of MR damper under impact load will also be greatly improved.

Using the developed hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform for weapon system under impact load excitation and a novel large-scale single-ended MR damper without the accumulator, impact tests for the special designed long-stroke magnetorheological recoil damper were done and its dynamic performances under different impact loads and input current were examined in this paper. Model of damping force was established by using the model reference adaptive control method. Its dynamic performances of MR damper under model reference adaptive control strategies were analyzed by numerical simulations and tests. Experimental results show that the model reference adaptive control method could reduce its peak value of recoil damping force to 27.33% and its peak value of stroke to 48.75%, and its adjustability of damping force could be well applied for its impact resistance design of gun recoil mechanism.

The realization of the desired damping characteristics based on magnetorheological (MR) dampers is important for semi-active control and useful for the matching process of suspension damper. To reduce the cost of the control system and improve the output accuracy of the desired damping force, this study proposes an open-loop control method featuring an accurate inverse model of the MR damper and a tripolar current driver. The reversible sigmoid model is used to accurately and quickly calculate the desired current. Furthermore, the change characteristic of the desired current is analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively, which shows that the desired current needs to change suddenly to make the actual damping force velocity curve quickly approach the desired one. To meet the demand of the desired current, a tripolar current driver controlled by an improved PI control algorithm is proposed, which is with fast response and low noise. Finally, the bench test verifies that the control system can achieve different desired damping characteristics well, and the inherent error in this process is explained through the gap between the available damping force area and the desired damping characteristic curve and the crossover phenomenon of the dynamic characteristic curves of the MR damper.

For the single-rod double-cylinder and double-coil magnetorheological (MR) damper studied in this paper, the damping force model of the damper is established by adopting multidisciplinary domain modeling method bond graph theory. Firstly, combined with the structure of the MR damper, the bond graph model of the MR damper was established, the damping force model of the damper was derived through the bond graph theory, and the influence factors, such as the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the damper were considered in the model. Based on the simulation of force-displacement and force-velocity characteristics of the damping force carried out by the damper theoretical model under different currents and velocities as well as the comparison with the damper bench test results, it was found that the force-displacement and force-velocity characteristic experiment curves of the damper agreed well with the simulation results. Under different working conditions, the maximum error of damping force of the MR damper was 7.2%. The damping force model of the MR damper studied in this paper was compared with that of the damper without considering the inertia force of MR fluid, and the influence of the inertia force of MR fluid on the damping force of the MR damper was analyzed. The results show that when the frequency of the damper is large, the inertial force of MR fluid has an important influence on the damping force; therefore, considering the inertial force of MR fluid in the model can greatly improve the accuracy of the model. The influence degree of key parameters on the damping force of the MR damper was studied through the theoretical model; such key parameters ranging from large to small were the channel clearance, energizing current, piston diameter, motion velocity, channel length, zero-field viscosity of MR fluid, and nitrogen pressure. This provides a basis for the adjustment of the damping force of the MR damper.

This paper presents the damping characteristics of a linear magneto-rheological (MR) damper with dual controllable ducts based on numerical and experimental analysis. The novel MR damper consisting of a dual-rod cylinder system and a MR valve is used to reduce the influences of viscous damping force and improve dynamic range. Driven by the dual-rod cylinder system, MR fluid flows in the MR valve. The pressure drop of the MR valve with dual independent controllable ducts can be controlled by tuning the current of two independent coils. Based on the mathematical model and the finite element method, the damping characteristics of the MR damper is simulated. A prototype is designed and tested on MTS machine to evaluate its damping characteristics. The results show that the working states and damping force of the MR damper can be controlled by the two independent coils.

AbstractIn this paper, the dynamic buckling of an elastic cylindrical shell subjected to an axial impact load is analyzed in Hamiltonian system. By employing a symplectic method, the traditional governing equations are transformed into Hamiltonian canonical equations in dual variables. In this system, the critical load and buckling mode are reduced to solving symplectic eigenvalues and eigensolutions respectively. The result shows that the critical load relates with boundary conditions, thickness of the shell and radial inertia force. And the corresponding buckling modes present some local shapes. Besides, the process of dynamic buckling is related to the stress wave, the critical load and buckling mode depend upon the impacted time. This paper gives analytically and numerically some new rules of the buckling problem, which is useful for designing shell structures.

This paper presents a smart passive MR damper with fast-responsive characteristics for impact mitigation. The hybrid powering system of the MR damper, composed of batteries and self-powering component, enables the damping of the MR damper to be negatively proportional to the impact velocity, which is called rate-dependent softening effect. This effect can keep the damping force as the maximum allowable constant force under different impact speed and thus improve the efficiency of the shock energy mitigation. The structure, prototype and working principle of the new MR damper are presented firstly. Then a vibration platform was used to characterize the dynamic property and the self-powering capability of the new MR damper. The impact mitigation performance of the new MR damper was evaluated using a drop hammer and compared with a passive damper. The comparison results demonstrate that the damping force generated by the new MR damper can be constant over a large range of impact velocity while the passive damper cannot. The special characteristics of the new MR damper can improve its energy dissipation efficiency over a wide range of impact speed and keep occupants and mechanical structures safe.

This paper discussed an elastic-plastic time-history analysis on a structure with MR dampers based on member model, in which the elastoplastic member of the structure is assumed to be single component model and simulated by threefold line stiffness retrograde model. In order to obtain better control effect, Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control algorithm is used to calculate the optimal control force, and Hrovat boundary optimal control strategy is used to describe the adjustable damping force range of MR damper. The effectiveness of the MR damper based on LQG algorithm to control the response of the structure was investigated. The results from numerical simulations demonstrate that LQG algorithm can effectively improve the response of the structure against seismic excitations only with acceleration feedback.

PD control method is widely utilized for the dynamic characteristics controlling in industrial robot manipulator area. The disturbance is usually uncertain in reality; the traditional PD controller is limited in that case. In this paper, a PD robust controller is introduced to optimize the convergence and stability of PD controller and avoid the extreme initial driving torque for two-link manipulator system. Using the co-simulation on Matlab/ Simulink and ADAMS, the paper designs a PD robust controller under uncertain upper bound disturbance and completes track control and driving torque simulation trial. The superiority of the two-link manipulators PD robust controller is verified through result comparison and analysis.

The major drawback of magnetorheological dampers (MR) lies in their non-linear and hysteretic force-velocity response. To take full advantage of the operating characteristics of these devices a high fidelity model is required for control analysis and design. In this contribution the ability of a generalised PI operator-based model to represent the characteristics of a commercially available MR damper is examined. This approach allows the user to define the PI operator to best match the hysteresis characteristics. For the MR damper the force-velcoity hysteresis characteristic is ‘S’ shaped and constrained. Two possibilities will be examined here for the generalised play operator; an hyperbolic tan function and a symmetric sigmoid function.

This paper presents the design and multi-physics optimization of a novel multi-coil magnetorheological (MR) damper with a variable resistance gap (VRG-MMD). Enabling four electromagnetic coils (EMs) with individual exciting currents, a simplified magnetic equivalent circuit was presented and the magnetic flux generated by each voltage source passing through each active gap was calculated as vector operations. To design the optimal geometry of the VRG-MMD, the multi-physics optimization problem including electromagnetics and fluid dynamics has been formulated as a multi-objective function with weighting ratios among total damping force, dynamic range, and inductive time constant. Based on the selected design variables (DVs), six cases with different weighting ratios were optimized using Bound Optimization BY Quadratic Approximation (BOBYQA) technique. Finally, the vibration performance of the optimal VRG-MMD subjected to sinusoidal and triangle displacement excitations was compared to that of the typical multi-coil MR damper.
