Implantable device cardiac observation (ICDO) such as pacemaker requires communication with medical devices outside the body in order to monitor or control the parameters of the organ it is supporting. Three types of implantable antennas have been investigated to determine their performances on two patient conditions: normal and hyperglycemia. Folded dipole, serpentine microstrip, and waffle-type Planar Inverted-F (PIFA) antennas are operated in the 402-405 MHz, which is medical implant communication services (MICS) band. Detailed analysis of the design issues of the antennas and comparative results of simulations and measurements are presented.

This paper showcases a low-power demodulator for medical implant communication services (MICS) applications. Complementary shunt resistive feedback, current reuse configuration, and sub-threshold LO driving techniques are proposed to achieve ultra-low power consumption. The chip has been implemented in standard CMOS process and consumes only 260-[Formula: see text]W.

AbstractSelf-powered implantable devices have the potential to extend device operation time inside the body and reduce the necessity for high-risk repeated surgery. Without the technological innovation of in vivo energy harvesters driven by biomechanical energy, energy harvesters are insufficient and inconvenient to power titanium-packaged implantable medical devices. Here, we report on a commercial coin battery-sized high-performance inertia-driven triboelectric nanogenerator (I-TENG) based on body motion and gravity. We demonstrate that the enclosed five-stacked I-TENG converts mechanical energy into electricity at 4.9 μW/cm3 (root-mean-square output). In a preclinical test, we show that the device successfully harvests energy using real-time output voltage data monitored via Bluetooth and demonstrate the ability to charge a lithium-ion battery. Furthermore, we successfully integrate a cardiac pacemaker with the I-TENG, and confirm the ventricle pacing and sensing operation mode of the self-rechargeable cardiac pacemaker system. This proof-of-concept device may lead to the development of new self-rechargeable implantable medical devices.

We present a meandered triple-band planar-inverted-F antenna (PIFA) for integration into brain-implantable biotelemetric systems. The target applications are wireless data communication, far-field wireless power transfer, and switching control between sleep/wake-up mode at the Medical Device Radiocommunication Service (MedRadio) band (401–406 MHz) and Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands (902–928 MHz and 2400–2483.5 MHz), respectively. By embedding meandered slots into the radiator and shorting it to the ground, we downsized the antenna to the volume of 11 × 20.5 × 1.8 mm3. We optimized the antenna using a 7-layer numerical human head model using full-wave electromagnetic field simulation. In the simulation, we placed the implant in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) at a depth of 13.25 mm from the body surface, which is deeper than in most works on implantable antennas. We manufactured and tested the antenna in a liquid phantom which we replicated in the simulator for further comparison. The measured gain of the antenna reached the state-of-the-art values of −43.6 dBi, −25.8 dBi, and −20.1 dBi at 402 MHz, 902 MHz, and 2400 MHz, respectively.

Comparative evaluations of design-build (DB), to design-bid-build (DBB), aredocumented in literature. However, a recent study suggests that even though several studies have been completed to compare DB and DBB, there are few statistically significant comparative results. Comparative analyses of highway projects of the same scope, size, and type could provide the basis to make the argument for the use of either DB or DBB on highway projects. The objective of this research is to compare DB to DBB on highway projects. The basis of comparison includes project cost, contract duration, number and type of contract change orders. Projects used for this research were obtained from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). The projects were subsequently selected based on project scope, size, and type, and then analysed using quantitative methods. The research found that there is enough evidence to support the use of DB over DBB on highway projects. The findings of this study have significant implications for practitioners and policymakers on highway projects and should inform decisions on the choice of project delivery method. The main limitation of the research is that the study used only 14 projects due to the difficulty of finding matching projects, and as such the results could not be generalized. However, the findings add to the body of research on criteria for comparing DB to DBB. To enhance understanding of how project scope, size, and type might affect or be affected by project delivery methods, the research recommends the standardization of project types classification for highway projects

It is related leg problems to the realization of the necessity of doing a detailed analysis of the phenotype correlations between body weight and exterior measurements. As a result of the study, lower coefficients have been obtained of the correlation between the girth of the tarso metatarsus on one hand, and the body weight and the girth behind the wings, on the other hand (respectively 0.563 and 0.608), compared with the one between the body weight and the girth behind the wings (0.898). It is advisable in the selection of ostriches to take into consideration the necessity of a higher phenotypic correlation between the girth of the tarso metatarsus on the one hand, and the body weight and the girth behind the wings on the other hand, with a view to preventing leg problems.

Adam Knee continues this discussion of the action/adventure genre in Chapter Seven, "Training the Body Politic: Networked Masculinity and the 'War on Terror' in Hollywood Film", offering a detailed analysis of the representation of masculinity and agency in two Hollywood films, Unstoppable (2010) and Source Code (2011), which exhibit striking similarities at a range of levels, from their narratives to deeper structures of gendered character function, theme, and geo-political perspective that, he contends, are a manifestation of distinctly post-9/11 American concerns. Like Vincent M. Gaine's chapter on James Bond, Knee analyses both the variations inherent in the genre in the wake of 9/11 and the consistencies of the parameters of American mainstream film, and, more specifically, a developing conceptualization of modes of disciplined masculinity necessitated by the nation’s 'War on Terror' narrative. Knee then concludes with a comparative analysis of a pre-9/11 film and its post-9/11 remake in which these parameters are brought to the fore: the original Paul Verhoeven RoboCop (1987) and RoboCop (2014) directed by José Padilha.

This research aims to quantify the current market size for wearable technology, and determine why this market has struggled over the past decade. These are products which are worn on the body and enhanced using electronics. Forecasts have been made as to how this wearable technology is likely to develop in terms of market size and product design or function. It is predicted that in five years the wearable technology market will be several times larger than it is currently, and entertainment devices will overtake fitness to become the largest product category. Medical devices will be used to reduce healthcare costs by monitoring patients within their own home and wearable technology will allow businesses to improve customer relations and productivity.

This paper presents a method for low data rate transmission for devices implanted in the body using backscattered Long Range (LoRa) signals. The method uses an antenna loaded with a switch that changes between two load impedances at the rate of a modulating oscillator. Consequently, the LoRa signal transmitted by a LoRa node is reflected in the adjacent channels and can be detected with a LoRa gateway tuned to the shifted channels. A prototype developed to operate at Medical Implant Communication Service (MICS) and the Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) 433 MHz band is presented. The prototype uses a commercial ceramic antenna with a matched network tuned to the frequency band with high radiation efficiency. The effect of the coating material covering the antenna was studied. Simulated and experimental results using a phantom show that it is feasible to read data from deep implanted devices placed a few meters from the body because of the high sensitivity of commercial LoRa receivers.

This paper describes some of the processing issues for extruding salicylic acid-based polymer prodrugs into fibers for medical devices. Polymeric prodrugs, in which a drug is polymerized in a degradable polymer that delivers controlled quantity of the drug to a targeted site in the body as the device degrades, are a new approach to controlled release. Hollow fibers were produced by solution spinning. Solid fibers were formed by melt processing. The salicylic acid polymers exhibited shear-thinning behavior. The viscosity exhibited pronounced temperature dependence.
