Balancing between Headway and Frequency Scheduling for Bus Service

Bus networks occupy less space in city streets, and compared to other kinds of public transportation, need less investment cost. An accurate bus operation schedule which considers actual arriving and departure time is essential for bus companies, due to high passenger demand. In real-world cases, there are daily differences in the frequency of bus dispatch from the terminal, and headway of buses between each bus bay along their route, depending on peak hour traffic and resulting congestion. In this research we studied effective parameters for preparation of proper bus operation scheduling. Measures are essential to ensure that buses receive priority over other traffic, if they are to be attractive to passengers. Finally, we suggest some solutions for lessening interval time in headway and frequency scheduling for bus services. Data obtained from an actual bus operation in the city of Tehran in Iran was used in this study.

One of the government's duties to fulfill the need for safe, comfortable and affordable public transportation services so as to facilitate the mobilization of the community in carrying out its activities is the Golek Bus Application Service as an innovation in improving public transportation services for users of the Suroboyo Bus service. The purpose of this research is to find out and describe the application innovation Gobis in improving public transportation services Suroboyo Bus in the city of Surabaya by using qualitative research methods with data collection techniques observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques are data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the five attributes of innovation are as follows: 1) Relative advantage in innovation has been carried out optimally because it has advantages over previous innovations, 2) Conformity in the innovation of gobis applications in suroboyo bus services is optimal, but there are still some that need improvement due to the lack of additional routes for lines that match the corridors in the gobis application, 3) The complexity of this new innovation is also good but there are still shortcomings related to the arrival and departure schedules of Suroboyo Bus.

Public transportation brings more convenience to customer in urban and rural areas. In Malaysia, awareness of using the PJ City bus by passengers in Petaling Jaya is still limited. Many passengers are still unsatisfied with the services provided because the shuttle bus is zero-priced services, so the quality of services are always questioned by access users. Therefore, this current study is to investigate the influences of value, quality and reputation of free shuttle (PJ City) bus services towards customer satisfaction. Understanding what customers expect is very important as it will help to improve the services. Data were collected from users of PJ City bus using a survey questionnaire. The finding further revealed that, value positively influenced the satisfaction of customers. So, it is important for the service provider to enhance its value to the customer.

Urban public transportation system is a means of providing mobility to locals, visitors as well as tourists. KL Hop-On Hop-Off buses, for instance, are designed specifically for local and foreign tourists to move within the Kuala Lumpur (KL) city centre areas for the purpose of tourism. However, there is only one route provided by the KL Hop-On Hop-Off, with more than 20 stops. The duration for a complete route tour without any stop is too long; that is around 2-2 ½ hours. Coupled with the problem of traffic congestion in KL, passengers face the problems of punctuality and long waiting periods. Thus, this study was carried out to evaluate the existing route of the KL Hop-On Hop-Off bus services. GIS application and questionnaire survey were used to evaluate the route. As a result, this study proposes three new routes as the alternatives to the existing single route Hop-On Hop-Off bus service. With the new routes, duration of a single full route tour can be reduced based on the interest of tourist. Tourists will be able to concentrate on just one part of KL city centre for their one-day tour based on their interest either heritage, shopping or nature.

Las condiciones de movilidad de los ciudadanos no son equitativas, están atravesadas por diversos factores como el nivel socio-económico, las capacidades motrices, la edad y el género. Esta investigación se enfoca en la movilidad en transporte público de mujeres que residen en un barrio precario de Cuenca: la Ciudadela Jaime Roldós; se estudia la incidencia de la distribución territorial en sus desplazamientos. Para ello, se analiza, mediante entrevistas semi – estructuradas y cartografía social, de qué forma perciben sus recorridos en autobús al atravesar la ciudad. Se encuentra que el defciente servicio de transporte público produce viajes extensos, lo que provoca que las entrevistadas inviertan mucho tiempo en movilizarse. Así también, la percepción de inseguridad constante, el acoso y violencia sexual es un factor que defne sus viajes; no obstante, preferen el autobús por su economía. Estudios como este permiten visibilizar que las condiciones de movilidad aún están lejos de ser equitativas para todos los ciudadanos.  Palabras clave: Transporte público, derecho a la ciudad, movilidad cotidiana, barrio precario, equidad de género AbstractThis thesis focuses on the daily mobility on public transportation of women residing in a precarious neighborhood of Cuenca. The incidence  of territorial distribution on displacements was studied. To achieve this, an analysis, through semi - structured interviews and social cartography on how they perceive their bus routes when crossing the city, was carried out. It was found that poor public transport  service produced extensive travel, which caused respondents to spend a lot of time to get around. Likewise, the perception of constant insecurity,harassment and sexual violence was a factor that defned their travels. Yet, they preferred bus service for its economy. The quality of public transportation services is one of the most important performance indicators of modern urban policies for both planning and implementation aspects. Therefore, along with the size of the city, the significance of appropriate cost evaluation and optimization of all related transportation activities increases as well. One of the most important cost factors for the public transport agencies is naturally the fuel consumption of the vehicles. In this study, the attention is focused on the metropolitan bus transport service. The specific aim is to minimize a significant portion of total fuel utilization that occurs due to the so called deadhead trip or dead mileage, which is defined as the idle distance covered by the vehicle between the garage and the route terminal stops without carrying any passengers. In this study, the results of four mathematical models for minimizing the total deadhead trip distance covered in city bus services of Izmir are presented. The models vary due to the inclusion of garage capacity restrictions or operator distinction for supporting both operational and strategical decisions. All models are applied to the recent bus schedule data, which consist of 293 routes, 1,424 buses and 10 garages, for obtaining the optimal route bus-garage allocations and garage capacities. The results of the Decentralized-Capacitated model, which is appropriate for quick implementation, promise a 7.8% reduction in total dead mileage. While on the other hand, if all garage capacities can be expanded and the bus service is maintained only by one operator as modelled in the Centralized-Uncapacitated case, even a 31.4% improvement is possible in the long term. The environmental gains as well as the financial benefits to be achieved when the solutions are actually implemented, justify the practical contribution of the study.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This study represents the final stage of an investigation into understanding the variation in bus map design and the impact of map design preferences in public transportation information portrayal, with a particular focus on Malaysia. In many cities, bus services represent an important facet of easing traffic congestion and reducing pollution. However, with the entrenched car culture in many countries, persuading people to change their mode of transport is a major challenge. To promote this modal shift, people need to know what services are available and where (and when) they go. Bus service maps provide an invaluable element of providing suitable public transport information, but are often overlooked by transport planners, and are under-researched by cartographers. There are various approaches to the design of bus maps, but it is always an issue for the authorities to understand which designs are preferred by the public and which perform best in conveying the required information. A total of 100 Malaysians completed six journey-planning tasks using two network bus maps, which were different in designs. The two bus map designs involved in this study are based on previous map analysis research.</p><p>The study found that majority of respondents were competent as they successfully completed the journey planning task, with more than 80 percent of the tasks being answered correctly. Additional enquiries proved that the effective design used in a bus map can attract more users to use public transportation, thus provide evidence that map availability can play a part in enhancing public transport ridership.</p>

Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC and Delhi Metro-Rail System (DMRS) are two important public transport systems in Delhi. The DMRS has been attractive in respect to ridership but in 2015 it has shown a decrease in its ridership. It has also been found that ridership of the bus service, the most important public transport system for the poor in Delhi, has decreased over time whereas the numbers of private vehicles have recorded phenomenal increase resulting in traffic congestions and pollution problems in the city. The purpose of this study is to explore the role of the fear of crimes along with other reasons for decreasing trends in the usage of public transport in Delhi. The study is based on people opinion and perception for which 350 persons were interviewed with the structured questionnaire from ten transit places having varied socio-economic conditions. Fear of crimes within buses/coaches is considered an important reason for not using public transport in western countries but as per this study, the same is not true in the case of Delhi. Role of fear of crimes along with other factors was verified with the spearman’s correlation coefficient. The weak negative correlation has been found between the preference to public bus services and the fear of crimes; the crowing; the unavailability. It indicates that along with these other factors are equally responsible for the choice of public transports in Delhi.

The quality of service provided to passengers in high-frequency bus routes can be affected by variety of factors. According to this fact that high-frequency bus routes have high passenger demand and short headways (less than 10 minutes), interaction between buses would be much higher, causing decline in reliability of service. In order to represent a busy bus operation in Kuala Lumpur city centre network, a simulation model will be calibrated. The calibration and validation parameters for the key bus route will derive from data captured by the Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) and Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system and procedures will be outlined to adapt the model to other bus routes. The study is in its initial stage to find out what factors have highest impact on reliability of high-frequency bus services in the city centre. An initial model was developed for forecasting passenger demand by using RSM. The simulation model will first be used to conduct a sensitivity analysis of the factors influencing reliability, such as passenger demand, terminal departure behaviour, and unfilled trips. Next, several operating strategies, including terminal departure and time-point holding will be modelled and evaluated for their potential to improve reliability. Model results show that which strategies and factors can significantly improve bus service reliability.

This paper investigates the constraints that limit the use of public bus by people commuting to work in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Putrajaya was built to replace the city of Kuala Lumpur as the new administrative centre for the government of Malaysia. This research adopted qualitative methods which involved a total of 29 respondents who use car and/or bus to commute to their workplaces. The findings of this study show that several factors, such as reliability, safety, and customer service, play considerable roles in promoting the use of public transportation. The respondents agree that reliability (e.g. frequency, punctuality, and transfer) is an important factor in choosing a particular mode of transport. Safety is one of the major concern amongst the respondents, which need to be improved along with customer satisfaction of the public bus service. The results of this study suggest that a more reliable and accessible service is required to promote public bus as an attractive mode of transport.
