At present, many analysis methods and calculation formulas of the bearing capacity of concrete filled steel tubular columns have been researched. But these numerous calculation formulas of the bearing capacity have varied forms, and the application scope and the calculation precision of them are also quite different, which makes it difficult and confused for engineering designer to choose a suitable formula. Primary calculation formulas of the bearing capacity of concrete filled steel tubular columns are summarized. The calculation results of these formulas are compared with some test results of the concrete filled steel tubular columns with a large diameter. The applicability and the accuracy of these formulas are analyzed. Based on these comparisons and analyses, reasonable suggestion is given to select the suitable formula. Finally, one formula is provided to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of concrete filled steel tubular columns reinforced with steel bars.

Deem test results from the low reversed cyclic loading quasi-static test with 2 RC columns as the basic information of secant stiffness damage of the reference column and take use of the TMS instrument in the test to artificially make the damage percentage of secant stiffness of the RC column as 33%, 50% and 66%, 6 damaged columns in total; reinforce the 6 damaged columns and 2 undamaged ones under the same conditions with AFL, through quasi-static contrast test. Test results show that it is able to effectively boost horizontal ultimate bearing capacity and ductility deformability of the RC columns with AFL for reinforcement; besides, there is a linear function relationship between horizontal ultimate bearing capacity, target ductility factor, and damage percentage of secant stiffness.

An experimental program of laboratory bearing tests was performed to characterize the bearing capacity of foundation on unsaturated granular soils. All tests were performed by pushing a circular rod on the surface of compacted sand specimens with different values of matric suction until failure. The test results show an increase in ultimate bearing capacity with increasing matric suction at low suction value but a decrease in that at high level of suction. The comparisons between the test results and simulations using the expressions proposed in this paper are presented and discussed. Good agreements are achieved for all testing values of suction.

Abstract: 7 square steel tubular columns were tested to discuss the ultimate axial bearing capacity, ductility performance and the steel consumption under stiffened by steel belts and binding bars of different cross-sections. Test results indicate that only by increasing fewer amounts of steel usage, stiffened square CFST columns with binding bars can not only improve the overall effects of restraint and alleviate regional local buckling between the binding bars, but also improve the bearing capacity of concrete filled square steel tubular columns. The utility benefits and the economical benefit is considerable, deserving extensive use.

The mechanical properties of T-shaped concrete-filled steel tubular (TCFST) short columns under axial compression after elevated temperature are investigated in this paper. A total of 30 TCFST short columns with different temperature (T), steel ratio (α), and duration of heating (t) were tested. The TCFST column was directly fabricated by welding two rectangular steel tubes together. The study mainly investigated the failure modes, the ultimate bearing capacity, the load-displacement, and the load-strain performance of the TCFST short columns. Experimental results indicate that the rectangular steel tubes of the TCFST column have deformation consistency, and the failure mode consists of local crack, drum damage, and shear failure. Additionally, the influence of high temperature on the residual bearing capacity of the TCFST is significant, e.g., a higher temperature can downgrade the ultimate bearing capacity. Finally, a finite element model (FEM) is developed to simulate the performance of the TCFST short columns under elevated temperature, and the results agree with experimental values well. Overall, this investigation can provide some guidance for future studies on damage assessment and reinforcement of the TCFST columns.

In order to study the influence of steep slope-karst coupling on the vertical bearing characteristics of pile foundation, the orthogonal simulation tests of pile foundation under 4 different roof thickness and 5 different slope are carried out by using Marc finite element software, and the correction coefficient of vertical partial bearing capacity of pile foundation according to roof thickness and slope is put forward. The test results show that when the thickness of the roof is more than 3 times the pile diameter, the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile foundation tends to be stable, and the value is about 19% when the slope is 45°; the ultimate bearing capacity of the pile foundation decreases gradually with the increase of the slope, and the reduction reaches 29.83% when the slope is greater than 45°. According to the calculation results, the variation law of vertical partial bearing capacity of pile foundation is analyzed, and the calculation formula of standard value of vertical ultimate bearing capacity of pile foundation in steep slope karst area considering both roof thickness and slope is put forward, and the correction coefficients αi and β are put forward.

The fire resistance of concrete filled steel tubular column is usually obtained by the numerical analysis method, which is difficult to operate and not convenient in the actual civil engineering. So it is necessary to study the simplified calculation method. A large number of numerical simulation results of the temperature distribution of the section and the bearing capacity at high temperature of the concrete filled steel tubular columns are analyzed. The influences of secondary parameters are simplified. The simplified calculation method at 150 min and 180 min for the bearing capacity at high temperature of concrete filled steel tubular columns subjected to axial compression and fire is presented on the basis of comprehensive analysis of the numerical calculation results. The calculation results can be used as the basis to judge the fire resistance. It is shown by the comparison with the experimental results that the precision of the simplified calculation method can meet the requirements of engineering application.

To investigate the influence of wire mesh type, wrapped way and stress of column on the behavior of RC square columns, the experiment including an unreinforced column and 7 strengthened columns with the high strength wire mesh mortar were tested. The results were shown that the strength and axial deformation of columns reinforced by high strength wire mesh mortar were enhanced. Finally, the calculation formula for ultimate bearing capacity of the reinforced columns was given based on the test results, which agreed with the tested results well.

Considering the strain rate then puts forward the modified uniaxial dynamic constitutive model related to strain rate in concrete-filled square steel tube and the modified calculation results match well with the experimental results. Based on the above conclusion, uniaxial compression performance finite element analysis with different strain rate among 10-5/s–10-3/s is completed, the results showed that strain rate can obviously change the dynamic performance of the concrete-filled square steel tube. Through the analysis of the influencing factors of the core concrete compressive strength, it is showed that with the increasing of the strain rate and the improving of concrete strength, the ultimate bearing capacity of concrete-filled square steel tube is higher and the ductility is reduced. With the increasing of stirrup ratio, ultimate bearing capacity is greater and the ductility is enhanced. With the sectional dimensions increasing, the ultimate bearing capacity is greater and the ductility is enhanced.
