Although ontologies have been used in a considerable number of knowledge management projects, in most of them their application has been limited to the definition of a common organizational language. This chapter offers an alternative view on the use of ontologies, supporting all of the knowledge management processes, including generation, acquisition, transference, and integration of knowledge. The focus of this chapter is on presenting how ontologies can be included in knowledge management systems to promote availability of knowledge, knowledge evolution, automatic and semi-automatic knowledge extraction, and integration of heterogeneous sources of information. Each one of these characteristics is supported by ontology technologies including the processes required to engineer and manage an ontology, such as: querying, mapping, and evolution. Finally, the architecture of a proposed knowledge management system that uses ontologies to improve its processes is presented.

The increasingly global business competition has an impact on the increasing demands of competitiveness among companies in Indonesia in order to survive, the ability of decision making and solving a problem and effective managerial capability requires the company has strong intellectual capital and embrace open system to be able to respond more easily to the needs and needs of stakeholders in the company. Knowledge Management System (KMS) is a system created to facilitate the capture, storage, retrieval, transfer and reuse of knowledge. The purpose of making KMS is to create and build technology that can help users to reduce the tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge to be used in dealing with a problem with knowledge in accordance with the procedures of a company or organization in the action to handle the problem. Every company or organization has done the implementation of knowledge management system, not least in Bank Central Asia (BCA). BCA's strategy focuses on growth, credit quality and efficiency that enable BCA to achieve high-quality growth and enhance its role as a transactional Bank providing payment settlement services in support of achieving a strong Indonesian economy and national development goals. The exponential growth in the knowledge base for radioactive waste management is a cause for concern in many national programmes. In Japan, this problem is exacerbated by a volunteering approach to siting of a deep geological repository, which requires particular flexibility in the tailoring of site characterisation plans, repository concepts and associated performance assessments. Recognition of this situation led, in 2005, to initiation by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) of an ambitious project to develop an advanced Knowledge Management System (KMS) aimed to facilitate its role as the supplier of background R&D support to both regulators and implementers of geological disposal. This overview outlines the boundary conditions and milestones for the Japanese radioactive waste management programmes, the roles of key organisations and the particular responsibilities of JAEA that led to definition of the goals of the KMS.

The Knowledge in a study program or faculty at Higher Education is an asset that must be utilized by universities. Explicit knowledge can be in the form of meeting attendance, meeting schedules, minutes of meetings, teaching materials, documentation of the final session, letters (SK, ST, contract letters, etc.), certificates, reports, guidelines, manuals , memos, strategic plans, curriculum and so on. However, knowledge cannot be easily accessed by cross study programs or cross faculties at the college. Some study programs have done documentation so well that it has an impact on satisfying accreditation assessments. Study programs that have satisfactory accreditation can be an example for other study programs. A knowledge management system is needed to bridge the distance between study programs that have good governance and others. The results of the knowledge management system testing allow for the exchange of knowledge to become a means of improving the quality of governance both at the study program level and at the faculty level.

The development of science in the era of globalization is happening so quickly. The ability of humans to develop a variety of science (knowledge) is getting better with the tacit and explicit knowledge. From this development both tacit and explicit knowledge can be combined and varied to a Knowledge Management System. PT SCF (Limited) Palembang branch is a company engaged in the field of inspection and certification services. The problem faced by this company is that the process and media for sharing and transferring knowledge between colleagues is still small and not yet entrenched. This condition makes the company less effective in terms of producing and disseminating knowledge to staff quickly and accurately. Documentation of daily activities and routines are not carried out in a planned and integrated manner. Each department carries out its own activities in its own way, for example storing documentation on a CD, as well as a piece of paper. So the authors are interested in analyzing and designing Web Knowledge Management System. The method used is the object analysis and design method. While the tools for modeling using Unified Modeling Language (UML). The results obtained are a prototype web Knowledge Management System (KMS) that can be a media of information and knowledge sharing related to employee acceptance and training

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to recommend a framework for remodelling a public sector knowledge management system (KMS) using key knowledge management (KM) processes. The rationale is to provide insight and guidelines to organisations that struggle with KM. Design/methodology/approach This desktop study adopted the qualitative approach and literature to support the understanding regarding the remodelling of the public sector KMS using key KM processes. Findings The study found that if KM processes are not considered, the prospect of KM is limited. The best way to manage public sector knowledge is following KM processes using information technology. Without proper KM, organisations may not know how knowledge is generated, codified, stored, shared and used in an organisation. Originality/value The paper provides a framework to guide public sector organisations in the implementation of electronic KM. Thus, proposing a new way of managing knowledge by using the electronic KM processes in the public sector organisations. The study will also benefit other organisations implementing KM programmes.

This paper contributes to the field of knowledge management arguing that knowledge management research should be grounded in both systems thinking and sociotechnical thinking. Systems thinking enables the treating of knowledge management broadly, as a complex system, not limited to knowledge management processes, but encompassing other essential elements related to managing knowledge at an organization. Sociotechnical thinking considers both social elements and technology equally important in managing knowledge. The two above mentioned approaches are used to support the idea that, in order to successfully manage knowledge, a balanced sociotechnical knowledge management system should be designed at an organization. The article seeks to investigate the main elements of such a system and to show how these elements relate to each other demonstrating that a strong correlation exists between the knowledge management process and strategic leadership.

With digital transformation and progress in science, developing process capabilities with limited resources has gained immense importance for higher education institutions. To provide the highest quality education services and manage the information and knowledge management processes, appropriate strategies, and related key performance management factors must be defined efficiently. In the literature, numerous models and tools have been proposed to measure knowledge management capabilities (Mohapatra et al., 2016; Imran et al., 2017; Dayan et al., 2017; Trivella et al., 2015). This chapter aims to develop a better understanding of the relationship between knowledge management processes and propose an assessment model of knowledge management system for higher education institutions to measure knowledge resources and their capabilities. To do so, the knowledge management system is identified by four main attributes (People, Processes, Technology and Culture) and each attribute is comprehensively analysed in a dedicated section.
