In this paper, the stress distribution of the orthotropic steel bridge deck in a suspend bridge under local wheel load is analyzed. Some retrofitted methods are introduced, two of which are studied. One is using the concrete paving layer (CPL), and the other is using the sandwich plate system (SPS) to strengthen the orthotropic steel bridge deck. Local finite element models are established by ANSYS; stress distribution of bridge deck is calculated under the designed vehicle load before and after the deck retrofitted by the CPL or the SPS, and the results are compared with each other. The analysis results indicate that, under wheel pressure load, the orthotropic steel deck appears stress concentration; after the deck was retrofitted no matter by the CPL or the SPS, all the stress peaks decrease obviously, and the fatigue resistance of the orthotropic steel deck increases, which indicate that the two methods are effective to retrofit the orthotropic steel bridge deck. Using the CPL method can lead to lower stress concentration than that of using the SPS method, but the concrete paving layer is easy to crack, so, high performance concrete with high tension strength is needed.

A novel ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) layer composite orthotropic steel deck was adopted in the construction of a new bridge in China to improve the fatigue performance of the orthotropic steel deck plate and reduce the disease of surface wearing layer. In situ experiments were conducted to study the UHPC layer’s impact on the behavior of the orthotropic steel deck. The test vehicle loads were applied on the deck plate before and after UHPC layer paving, the stresses where fatigue cracks usually occur and the deflections of critical sections were measured. The test results verified that the UHPC composite steel deck system could significantly reduce the stress of the rib-to-deck connection region and the stress at the bottom toe of rib-to-diaphragm weld. In addition, it slightly influenced the performance of U shape rib, girder web-to-deck and diaphragm cutout.

Orthotropic plate participates in bridge structure as a part of steel box girder, while in Balinghe Bridge it is used as bridge deck directly to endure the wheel load [1]. In this paper it’s studied systematically the mechanical behavior of orthotropic steel bridge deck in combination with the deck model of Balinghe Bridge, and shows the positions emerging fatigue cracks to provide the basis for future health monitoring and put forward some suggestions.

By means of finite element modeling (FEM) and fatigue experiments, we study the fatigue performance of the rounded welding region between the diaphragm plate and closed rib of orthotropic steel bridge deck in this work. A local sub-model of the rounded welding region from the orthotropic steel bridge deck was developed to analyze the stress distributions. Based on the analysis results we designed the fatigue specimen for the fatigue test of this detailed structure. The fatigue experimental results revealed that the crack initiates from the weld toe of the rounded welding region and the stress concentration at the rounded welding region is the main mechanism of fatigue crack initiation. In addition, we propose three improvements to reduce the stress concentration of the rounded welding region, and the local structure optimization scheme of the diaphragm–rib weld can effectively improve the fatigue resistance of the detailed weld structure.

Some retrofitted methods are introduced, and in these retrofitted methods, a strengthening case of using the sandwich plate system (SPS) to strengthen the orthotropic steel bridge deck of a suspend bridge was studied. A local finite element model is established by ANSYS based on an orthotropic steel bridge deck sample, stress distribution of deck due to the wheel load of the vehicle defined in China current code were analyzed under different loading conditions, and the strengthening effect with SPS was evaluated. The influence of the thickness and elastic modulus of elastic sandwich on the transverse stress of deck was analyzed. The results show that, compared with the orthotropic steel bridge deck before strengthened, the stress peak is decreased obviously without new welding residual stress be generated, and the fatigue resistant of bridge deck is increased apparently after the deck strengthened by SPS. The variation of the thickness and elastic modulus of the elastic sandwich have little influence on the stress behaviours of the orthotropic steel bridge deck.

A typical rib-to-deck joint in orthotropic steel bridge deck in a suspension bridge is analyzed in this paper. A local finite element model of bridge deck is established by ANSYS, the vehicle load defined in current code is selected as live load, the stress distribution of the deck bottom in the rib-to-deck joint is analyzed. Let the wheel load move along the longitudinal direction of the deck, the maximum stress range at rib-to-deck joint is obtained under three loading conditions in transverse direction, which are riding-rib wall loading, over-rib loading, and in-between-ribs loading respectively. Using the principles of linear elastic fracture mechanics, the fatigue life of rib-to-deck joint in orthotropic steel decks is evaluated. The analysis results indicate that, the higher stress range under overweight wheel load is the basic reason which will induce fatigue crack at rib-to-deck joint. The Paris formula which is based on the linear elastic fracture mechanics can be used to estimate the residual life of weld joints in orthotropic steel bridge deck.

A super lightweight deck can enhance load rating and functionality of a bridge, especially those identified as structurally deficient. This study was aimed to develop and experimentally validate a novel bridge deck as an ultra-lightweight low-profile waffle slab of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) with either carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) or high strength steel (HSS) reinforcement. The proposed system lends itself to accelerated bridge construction, rapid deck replacement in bridges with load restrictions, and bridge widening applications without the need to replace girders. Performance and failure modes of the proposed deck were initially assessed through extensive lab experiments and finite element analysis, which together confirmed that the proposed deck panel meets the AASHTO LRFD requirements. The proposed deck system is not susceptible to punching shear of its thin slab and fails in a rather ductile manner. To evaluate its long-term performance, the system was further tested under the dynamic impact of wheel load at the Accelerated Pavement Testing (APT) facility of the Florida Department of Transportation using a Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS).

Based on forced vibration tests for high-performance concrete (HPC), the influence of bridge vibration induced by traveling vehicle on compressive strength and durability of HPC has been studied. It is concluded that 1 d and 2 d compressive strength of HPC decreased significantly, and the maximum reduction rate is 9.1%, while 28 d compressive strength of HPC had a slight lower with a 3% maximal drop under the action of two simple harmonic vibrations with 2 Hz, 3 mm amplitude, and 4 Hz, 3 mm amplitude. Moreover, the vibration had a slight effect on the compressive strength of HPC when the simple harmonic vibration had 4 Hz and 1 mm amplitude; it is indicated that the amplitude exerts a more prominent influence on the earlier compressive strength with the comparison of the frequency. In addition, the impact of simple harmonic vibration on durability of HPC can be ignored; this shows the self-healing function of concrete resulting from later hydration reaction. Thus, the research achievements mentioned above can contribute to learning the laws by which bridge vibration affects the properties of concrete and provide technical support for the design and construction of the bridge deck pavement maintenance.
