Research on Hot-Rolling Technics of a Nickel-Based Corrosion Resistant Alloy

To improve the hot-rolled processing rate and mechanical properties of Monel alloy plates, its hot-rolling and heat treatment technics were researched, and reasonable hot-rolling temperature and annealing temperature were designed. Through the hot-rolling tests of Monel alloy plates ingots under the condition of different temperatures with a hot-rolling mill, the true stress and true strain curves were measured, the regularity of the flow stress influenced by temperature was investigated, and the hot-rolling temperature was ensured. We also did some study on the effects of annealing temperature on the mechanical properties and metallographs. The results show the reasonable hot-rolling temperature of Monel alloy plates ranges between 1050°C and 1150°C, and its annealing temperature ranges between 650°C and 750°C.

The as-cast Mg-14Li-1Zn alloy was hot rolled at different temperatures with the reduction of 50%, followed by cold rolling with the reduction of 80%. The effects of the hot rolling temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the final specimens were investigated. The results show that the higher rolling temperature brings about a more homogeneous microstructure, which is favorable for the subsequent cold rolling. When the hot rolling temperature is 300°C, the final specimen possesses the highest tensile strength and hardness of 238 MPa and 67.7 HV, respectively. When the hot rolling temperature is 200°C, the final specimen possesses the highest elongation of 24.6%.

For Inconel 625, where the γ” and δ phases precipitate, the influence of prior hot rolling on the process is not well covered. The influence of segregation bands and prior hot rolling on the precipitation of secondary phases during aging at 750 °C for different times was investigated. Prior hot-rolling was conducted on a hot rolling mill at 1050 °C and 1150 °C with three different deformation levels. The hot rolled samples were aged at 750 °C for 1, 5, 25 and 125 h. The γ″ precipitated in both the deformed and recrystallized grains in the segregation bands containing a high concentration of niobium and molybdenum and a lower concentration of nickel, chromium and iron. The opposite was observed between the segregation bands where no γ″ precipitate was found. There was a smooth transition in the density and the size of the γ″ particles in the deformed grains at the border of the segregation bands, while a more complex transition occurred in the recrystallized grains. This occurred in the area where the average niobium concentration decreased from 4.5 to 2.7 wt. %, which influenced the mechanical properties.

Microstructure of Al-Cu-Yb and Al-Cu-Gd alloys at casting, hot-rolled -cold-rolled and annealed state were observed; the effect of annealing on the microstructure was studied, as were the mechanical properties and forming properties of the alloys, and the mechanism of action was explored. Analysis of the solidification process showed that the primary Al solidification is followed by the eutectic reaction. The second Al8Cu4Yb and Al8Cu4Gd phases play an important role as recrystallization inhibitor. The Al3Yb or (Al, Cu)17Yb2 phase inclusions are present in the Al-Cu-Yb alloy at the boundary between the eutectic and aluminum dendrites. The recrystallization starting temperature of the alloys is in the range of 250–350 °C after rolling with previous quenching at 590 and 605 °C for Al-Cu-Yb and Al-Cu-Gd, respectively. The hardness and tensile properties of Al-Cu-Yb and Al-Cu-Gd as-rolled alloys are reduced by increasing the annealing temperature and time. The as-rolled alloys have high mechanical properties: YS = 303 MPa, UTS = 327 MPa and El. = 3.2% for Al-Cu-Yb alloy, while YS = 290 MPa, UTS = 315 MPa and El. = 2.1% for Al-Cu-Gd alloy.

In this study, a new Fe-6Mn-4Al-0.4C high strength medium manganese hot rolled steel sheet was designed. The influence mechanism of the intercritical annealing (IA) temperature on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of experimental steel were studied by SEM and XRD. The experimental steel was held for 30 minutes at 640°C, 680°C, 720°C, 760°C, 800°C, respectively. When the annealing temperature was 640°C, cementite particles precipitated between the austenite and ferrite phase boundary. As the annealing temperature increased, the cementite gradually dissolved and disappeared, the fraction of lamellar austenite increased significantly. When the annealing temperature is 800°C, the coarse equiaxed austenite and ferrite appeared. The yield strength (YS) decreased, the product of strength and elongation (PSE) and total elongation (TE) both increased first and then decreased, while the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) showed the opposite trend. The experimental steel exhibited excellent comprehensive mechanical properties after held at 760°C for 30 min. The UTS was 870 MPa, the YS was 703 MPa, and the TE was 77 %, the PSE was 67 GPa·%.

The effect of rolling temperatures on the interface microstructure and mechanical properties is investigated using 2-mm-thick TA1/Q235B composite sheets, which were prepared after nine passes of hot rolling of explosive welded plates. The results show that the vortex region and the transition layer exist in the interface at the explosive welded plate, while only the transition layer exists in the interface after hot rolling. The transition layer is composed of α-Ti, TiC, Fe, and FeTi, and the thickness increases with the increasing rolling temperature. The microhardness of the explosive welded plate is higher than that of the hot-rolling sheet, and the microhardness of interface are higher than that of matrix metals. The interface shear strength and tensile elongation of the hot-rolled sheet increase with the increasing hot rolling temperature, while the ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength (YS) and Young modulus decrease with the increase of hot rolling temperature. The shear strength of sheets is related to the interfacial compounds, and the tensile strength is mainly affected by the grain morphology of the matrix.

Mg-2.0Zn-0.8Gd (wt. %) alloy was rolled consecutively at different temperatures. The influence of rolling temperature and annealing process on the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the sheet were investigated. A deformation microstructure consisting of many intersected twins and a few dynamic recrystallization grains, and a basal texture with basal poles tilting about ± 10-15° from the normal direction towards the rolling direction were observed in the as-rolled sheet after 4 consecutive rolling processes. Static recrystallizaiton took place in the sheet after annealed above 300 °C. The annealed sheet exhibited a uniform microstructure and a non-basal texture with basal poles tilting about ± 38-43° from the normal direction towards the transverse direction. The annealed sheets exhibited higher ductility about 32% along the rolling direction and 40% along the transverse direction comparing with the as-rolled sheets. The static recrystallization during annealing process was helpful to modify the texture as well as the dynamic recrystallization during rolling in the RE-containing alloys.

The present work investigates the effect of rolling temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of an Al-Mg-Si alloy with 3wt% TiB2 in-situ composite that was fabricated by stir casting route. The composite was rolled to a true strain of ≈0.7 at three different temperatures viz; room temperature (RT), liquid propanol (LP) and liquid nitrogen (LN) temperatures. Tensile tests revealed that the samples rolled at liquid nitrogen temperature exhibited improved properties compared to the samples rolled at other two temperatures. A tensile strength and ductility of 291 MPa and 8% respectively were exhibited by the liquid nitrogen rolled sample. The strength is observed to be ≈12% higher and ductility is ≈60% more when compared to the room temperature rolled sample. X ray diffraction peaks indicated that rolled samples exhibited considerable increase in peak broadening compared to the unrolled one, which is attributed to the increase of the lattice strain due to distortion and the decrease in grain size of the material. The enhanced mechanical properties of the liquid nitrogen rolled samples were attributed to the combined effect of grain refinement and accumulation of higher dislocation density.
