This study was focused on the testing and assessment of the mechanical properties of nanometric zirconia dental ceramics. The density and the apparent porosity of specimens were tested with the Archimedes drainage method. The length variation of the specimens before and after sintering was measured with a vernier caliper, and the linear contraction was tested. An X-ray diffractometer was used for the specimen phase analysis. SEM was used to observe the section micrograph of the specimens. A universal mechanical testing machine was used to test the three-point flexural strength and the fracture toughness. A microhardness tester was used to test the Vickers hardness of the test specimens. Results indicates that the flexural strength of the test specimens ≥ 890MPa, the fracture toughness ≥6Mpa.m1/2, the Vickers hardness ≥ 1240MPa, the linear contraction ≥ 21%, and the apparent porosity ≥ 0.32%. Fully satisfying the requirements in oral medicine, the ceramic is an ideal material for biological joints and dental prosthesis.

Silicon was infiltrated into B4C preforms to fabricate B4C based composites ceramics at 1600 °C under vacuum circumstance. In this paper, silicon infiltration process was discussed by theoretical calculation. The volume expansion caused by reactions between silicon and boron carbide was about 89.1% from the calculation. In our study, the maximum density of B4C preform for the infiltration of silicon was about 1.5g/cm3 which was larger than theoretical result. The results of mechanical behavior showed that B4C based composites had excellent mechanical properties with a density lower than 2.6g/cm3, Vickers-hardness of this material was 27.2GPa, and this material showed a flexural strength of 349MPa and fracture toughness of 3.8 MPa*m1/2.

Al2O3/NiAl composites were successfully fabricated by hot-press-assisted exothermic dispersion method with elemental powder mixtures of Ni, Al, NiO. The content of Al2O3 on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al2O3/NiAl composites has been characterized. The results show that the Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites increase with increasing Al2O3 content. When the Al2O3 content is 15 wt %, the flexural strength and the fracture toughness peaked at 765 MPa and 9.67 MPa•m 1/2, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties is associated with a more homogeneous and finer microstructure developed by addition of Al2O3.

The objective of this work was to measure and correlate the degree of conversion (DC), mechanical properties and monomer elution from self-, dual- and light-cured core composites. Five samples of each of the following materials were prepared for each test: Clearfil (Core, Photo Core, Automix), Bisco (Core-Flo, Light-Core and Bis-Core). DC was determined using FTIR, compressive and flexural strength and modulus of elasticity using a universal testing machine and microhardness using Vickers hardness. Elution was measured using HPLC. One-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post-test and Pearson’s correlation were used to statistically analyze the data. DC of Clearfil-Dual (70.1%) and Clerafil-Photo (66.8%) were higher than Clearfil-Self (55.4%) and all Bisco materials (51.4–55.3%). Flexural strength of Clearfilwas higher than that of Bisco composites. The Microhardness of Clearfil-Dual (119.8VHN) and Clearfil-Photo (118.0VHN) were higher compared to other materials. The greatest elution was detected from self-cured materials. DC positively correlated to microhardness and compressive/flexural strength and negatively to BisGMA elution. Clearfil-Photo and Automix showed higher conversion, lower monomer elution and, generally, better mechanical properties. Self-cured composites should not be recommended for routine clinical use as their performance was inferior to dual- and light-cured composites. Microhardness may be used as an indicator of elution.

TiB2-(W,Ti)C composites with (Ni,Mo) as sintering additive have been fabricated by hot-pressing technique, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites have been investigated. (Ni,Mo) promotes grain growth of the composites. In the case of 7vol.% (Ni,Mo), the grain size decreases consistently with an increase in the content of (W,Ti)C. When the proper content of (W,Ti)C is added to TiB2 composites, the growth of matrix grains is inhibited and the mechanical properties of the composites are improved. The best mechanical properties of the composites are 1084.13MPa for three-point flexural strength, 7.80MPa•m 1/2 for fracture toughness and 17.92GPa for Vickers hardness.

In this study, glassy phase is formed by SiO2-K2O addition to serve as amorphous grain boundary transition layer. SiC (SiO2-K2O) / Cu composite material were prepared by two-step coating method and hot pressing sintered below 770°C, 30MPa for 1.5h, using α-SiC as main reinforced phase, SiO2-K2O as grain boundary and Cu as matrix. The Cu-SiC volume ratio was 75:25. The SiO2contents were 5vol.%, 10vol.%, 15vol.%, 20vol.% and 25vol.% of the total volume of the SiC / Cu. XRD and SEM techniques were used to characterize the composite particles and the sintered compacts; Archimedes method, Vickers hardness tester, universal testing machine to test the apparent porosity of the composite materials, the Vickers hardness and the bending strength, respectively. The results showed that with increasing of glassy phase contents, the Vickers hardness and the bending strength first rise and then drop, at the same time, it shows the opposite tendency for the apparent porosity. The sintering samples with the SiO2content of 15vol.% have the optimum mechanical properties, the Vickers hardness reached 1.49 GPa, and the bending strength was close to 235 MPa.

Al2O3-TiN nanocomposite ceramic tool materials were fabricated by hot-pressing technique and the mechanical properties were measured. Mechanical properties such as room temperature flexural strength, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness were measured through three-point bending test and Vickers indentation. The effects of the content of nano-scale TiN, sintering temperature and holding time on the mechanical properties were investigated. The results shows that the addition of nano-scale TiN can improve the mechanical properties of alumina ceramics. Both the flexural strength and the fracture toughness first increased then decreased with an increment in the content of nano-scale TiN. Both the Vickers hardness and the fracture toughness increased with an increment in the sintering temperature. The flexural strength increased with an increment in the holding time, while the fracture toughness decreased with an increment in the holding time. The composites with only nano-scale TiN have the highest Vickers hardness for the holding time of 30min, while the hardness of the composites with nano-scale TiN and micro-scale TiN decreased with an increment in the holding time.

The mechanical properties of spodumene-diopside glasses ceramics with 4-12% TiO2 were investigated. The main crystalline phases precipitated were eucryptite, β-spodumene and diopside. As TiO2 content increasing, the morphology of glass ceramics transformed from coarse to fine microstructure, then to reverse. The flexural strength, elastic moduli, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of the glass-ceramics were measured. The flexural strength of glass–ceramics containing 9%TiO2 was 198MPa, the Young’s modulus and fracture toughness were 91.3GPa and 2.3 MPa·m1/2 respectively. It was indicated that the mechanical properties were correlated with crystallization and morphology of glass ceramics

VC/Fe-based composite samples were fabricated with different volume fraction of VC in vacuum, and the content are 40%, 55%, and 70% respectively. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties for VC/Fe based composite with various VC content were studied. The results indicated VC content had a significant effect on the performance and organization of the VC/Fe-based composites and the effect of VC content on the mechanical properties are varied. With ratio of VC powders increased, the volume fraction of V8C7 particles formed additionally, while the fraction of Fe particles slightly decreased. The flexural strength, fracture toughness, relative density and wear resistant increased with increase of VC content in the range of 0 to 55vol. %, and then decreased with further increase of VC content, while the Vickers hardness increased with the increase of VC content. By comparing the material with 55vol.%VC would show the best combination of properties in the prepared samples.

The Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 in situ composites were successfully synthesized from the system of Ti-TiC-Al-TiO2 by reactive hot pressing at 1350 °C. The effect of TiC content on the phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated in detail. The results indicate that the fabricated products possess the highest purity as the TiC contents reduce to 90 % of its theoretical content. This deviation is mainly attributed to the decomposition of Ti3AlC2 and vaporization of Al at high temperatures. The effect of TiC content on the fracture toughness, flexural strength, Vickers hardness of Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 composites was also discussed in detail.

Ti(C,N)/Fe composites samples were fabricated in vacuum and Ti(C,N) content was respectively 20vol.%, 30vol.% and 40vol.%. The relationship of microstructure and mechanical properties for Ti(C,N)/Fe composites with various Ti(C,N) content were studied. The results indicated that the flexural strength and wear resistant increased with increasing the content of Ti(C,N)in the range of 0 to 30vol.%, then decreased with further increase of Ti(C,N) content, and the fracture toughness decreases with increasing Ti(C,N) content integrally, while the Vickers hardness increased with the increase of Ti(C,N) content. The microstructure of Ti(C,N)/Fe composites is uniform, fine grains, and grains combine more closely with Ti(C,N) 30vol.%. By comparing the properties of the material was relatively good with Ti(C,N) 30vol.% at 1300°C.
