Overall 12 specimens were experimentally investigated in this paper to study the hysteretic behaviors of the concrete-filled circular CFRP-steel tubular (C-CFRP-CFST) beam-columns. The test results indicated that CFRP can provide transverse confinement effect and longitudinal strengthening effect for the concrete filled circular steel tubular (C-CFST) beam-columns effectively and the local buckling of the steel tube is deferred. With the increase of the strengthening factor of the longitudinal CFRP, the damage scale reduces.

Overall 12 specimens were experimentally investigated in this paper to study the hysteretic behaviors of the concrete-filled square CFRP-steel tubular (S-CFRP-CFST) beam-columns. The test results indicated that CFRP can provide transverse confinement effect and longitudinal strengthening effect for the concrete filled square steel tubular (S-CFST) beam-columns effectively and the local buckling of the steel tube is deferred. The hysteretic load-deflection curves and the hysteretic moment-curvature curves at the mid-span of all the specimens are generally plump, and it shows these specimens have good hysteretic performance. In the later loading period, the load bearing capacity drops.

The focus of this research program is T-shaped CFT central column to steel frame beam connection. 3 joints with strong columns-weak beams and 1 joint with strong beams-weak columns 1:2 scale specimens were tested under constant axial loads and cyclic horizontal loads. Overall impact of axial force ratio and beam to column linear stiffness ratio on joint failure mechanism, hysteretic behavior, deformation ductility, and energy dissipation capability was investigated. Results showed that the failure mechanism for specimens with strong columns-weak beams was local buckling of the steel beam flanges and formation of the plastic hinges. There was minimum damage on the concrete column and joint panel zone. For a specimen with strong beams-weak columns, there was local buckling fracture on steel tube above and below the joint panel zone. Crushing of the core concrete was also observed with formation of the column hinges. It was found that both axial forces and beam to column linear stiffness ratio had impacts on joint capacity and ductility behavior of the specimens. Experiment results showed that the joint models had deformation ductility factor between 3.39 and 3.91 and viscous damping ratio between 0.46 and 0.51.

In order to look into the causes of fire response and post-fire bearing capacity of the steel tubular columns protected with different materials, the fire test was conducted for a set of circular steel tubes protected with different materials such as gypsum fireproof panel, bamboo plywood and the ordinary lumber core plywood, and the steel tube without any protective material. The fire response temperature of surface of steel tubes is measured and the axial compressive bearing capacity of the specimens after fire are tested and analyzed. The test results show that gypsum fireproof panel has the best fire protection characteristics, the ordinary lumber core plywood and bamboo plywood can also retard rising of the surface temperature of the steel tubes during the initial 35min although they are combustible materials. It is found that the post-fire bearing capacity of the steel tubes protected with different materials varies evidently, and the maximum value of response temperature has the greatest effect.

The findings of an experimental study that was undertaken to investigate the performance of concrete-filled steel tubular members subjected to lateral loads are reported in this study. Columns of pure concrete, concrete with reinforcing bars, and two steel tube thicknesses were considered. Two different tests were conducted in this study. One test is used to research the performance of steel tube-reinforced concrete model piles under a lateral loading. The other test is used to research the effect of the depth of rock embedment for piles embedded in a foundation to simulate actual engineering applications in an experimental study. According to these test results, a detailed analysis was carried out on the relationships, such as the stress-strain and load-displacement relationships for the specimen. These tests show that the steel tube thickness and steel bars will significantly enhance the lateral bearing capacity and rigidity of the composite components. Additionally, the ultimate bending moment formula of a steel tube-reinforced concrete pile is deduced. The comparison of the calculated results with the experimental results shows that this formula is applicable for this type of pile foundation.

This paper reports on an experimental study on the flexural behavior of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP)-concrete-steel double skin cantilever beams (referred to as DSTBs) that were tested under reversed cyclic loading. The beams were manufactured using a high-strength concrete (HSC) mix and they were 150 mm in diameter and 1.2 m in length. The main parameters of the experimental study included the size of the inner steel tube and the use of mechanical connectors in the form of steel rings welded on the inner steel tube. Test results indicate that DSTBs are capable of developing a highly ductile behavior under reversed cyclic lateral displacement excursions. It is found that the addition of mechanical connectors on the steel tube has no significant influence on the lateral displacement capacity of the test specimens, but they can eliminate the slippage between the concrete and inner steel tube. Examination of the test results has led to a number of significant conclusions on the influence of the beam parameters on the performance of DSTBs, which are discussed in the paper.

The improvement effect of the external concrete to stability of the core steel-tube was demonstrated by the steel-tube replacement ratio through experimental study. The test results show that, with the steel-tube replacement ratio increasing, the ultimate bearing capacity of composite columns increased correspondingly, and the ductility of composite columns was improved obviously also. Therefore, the steel-tube replacement ratio should be involved in the formula for calculating the ultimate bearing capacity of composite columns. By finite element method and regression analysis, the slenderness ratio is amended by the steel-tube replacement ratio and the calculation results of the eccentric compression bearing capacity agreed well with the test results.

For further study of mechanical properties of concrete-filled steel box columns (CFSBCs) with longitudinal stiffeners, axially loading tests of CFSBCs with longitudinal stiffeners was conducted to obtain their ultimate bearing capacity and failure modes. The test results were compared with those of hollow steel box columns with longitudinal stiffeners. Cross section of the test specimen was scaled from a chord member of Dongjiang Bridge. The experimental results show that failure mode of CFSBCs with longitudinal stiffeners is local buckling of steel plates, which is different from that of concrete-filled thin wall steel tube columns with longitudinal stiffeners. Although longitudinal stiffeners can prevent global buckling of steel plates, the effect is less obvious than that of concrete-filled thin wall steel tube columns. Meanwhile, three-dimensional finite element models (FEM) of the specimens were modeled using computer program ANSYS to obtain bearing capacities and load-strain curves. The FEM results coincide quite well with the test results. Further, influence of width to thickness ratio on mechanical behavior of CFSBCs was analyzed using FEM.

Based on analysis of the hysteretic experimental results of the concrete filled square CFRP-steel tubular (S-CFRP-CFST) beam-columns, it shows that the steel tube and the CFRP material can work concurrently both in longitudinal and transverse directions, the longitudinal strain and the transverse strain at a same point have opposite action. Additionally, the deflection curves of all the specimens are close to half sinusoidal shape. Analysis indicates that there is some strength degradation. The axial compression ratio and strengthening factor of the longitudinal CFRP can enhance the strength and the stiffness of the members and they can also delay the stiffness degradation. However, they will decrease the accumulated energy dissipation of the members. The axial compression ratio is beneficial to seismic behaviors to some extent.
